Tortured Souls

Just got done reading through more of the latest Rue Morgue and the article by Jen regarding Tortured Souls has me pumped for it. It's been awhile since Clive has done anything on the screen and anything based off of the awesome Tortured Souls figures is gonna be true horror. I especially like this part.....

"anything that proves too much for the studio will still be shot and included in the DVD release."

Shit, I can't wait for that.

I've been pumped up for this movie since they sold it to Universal. I was frothing at the mouth for it after reading that Rue Morgue article. I loved the novella that came with the figures, but I don't care about the changes that have been made to the story as long as I get to see Primordium and those monsters on the screen. I liked that Clive Barker already mentioned his plans for an unrated DVD in the article. Hans Rodionoff said he thought they were in pre-production so hopefully it will be rolling by this summer.

I have to admit I haven't opened any of my Tortired Souls figures yet so I haven't read the novella. How 'bout a transcription? As soon as I get a proper cabinet to display my figures I'm going to bust them all open and read it though. Hopefully that will happen before the movie comes out. I haven't had any luck finding just the right thing yet though. I might just have to break down and design and build one myself. I haven't done any wood working or carpentry in awhile. It's about time I get off my lazy ass.

The Tortured Souls novella is going to be published in Clive Barker's short story collection that is coming out next year. I do have the story typed up on my computer, Floyd, so PM me your e-mail and I'll send it over to you later if you are not quite ready to open those packages. I know a guy just like you. He's got hundreds of figures and all of them are still in the original packaging. Not me. I rip 'em open as soon as I get them and to hell with the collectable value! The original Tortured Souls figures were the first that I ever bought and I got them just to read that story.

Dammit, it's been way too long since we had any Clive Barker news. Neither his official website nor the Revelations page have been updated in ages. I need to know what's going on!!! Why can't Clive keep an online journal or something like other genre authors? But it's probably selfish to ask for that, the guy has his hands full already as it is.

Anybody care to scan/transcribe that Rue Morgue article on TORTURED SOULS for me? Or at least some more quotes from Clive ...

The man is a bit busy. I think we'll be seeing more interviews from him as they get ready to publish Abarat 2. I just got the proof copy of Abarat 2: Days of Magic, Nights of War and it's fucking fantastic. Hehe I know, Wetbones. Only teenage girls are interested in Abarat.

Anyway, I'm at work and I don't have the magazine in front of me right now so I'm going from memory here. For me, the exciting point of the article was when he said that he has a producer who understands what he is trying to do and that they are behind him this time. Clive Barker said he has been drawn back to the mythology of Hell again and again over his career. He likes horror movies to have a mythology behind them and he said how much he liked Hellboy because of that. He gave out the basic plot of the movie and mentioned that he has been toying with the idea of a demon only being able to come into our world if an exchange is made. A woman's husband makes an exchange for Lucidique and his wife is transported to Primordiom. This woman has to get back from a world filled with monsters to save her child and get revenge on her husband and 'that bitch that's in her bed' as Clive puts it. He also said that anything the studio or the MPAA have problems with will be filmed for an unrated DVD because he is going to make sure that his audience will have access to it. He plans to go into pre-production this summer for a 2005 release date. Primordium's mythology from the novella is in it, but he has also added a lot to it. I'm not sure if the movie has been given the official green light yet. He was hired to write and direct American Horror too and we know how that came out. I'm trying not to get my hopes too high because Clive Barker is about the most optimistic person on the planet. We shall see, but it all sounds great to me at this point.

I think my actual words were more along the lines of "only 10 year old, pre-teen girls could enjoy ABARAT" but hey whatever floats your boat. And many thanks for the summary of the article! Sounds very promosing but you're totally right, Clive is so damn optimistic and it always is infectious. Which is why every time he gives us an update I expect 10 movies and 20 books to come out in the next few months ... *sigh* ... However, Universal is definitely a good place to make horror films right now. They have changed quite a bit since the days when they gave Rob Zombie the boot. They also have a history of releasing longer, unrated cuts of horror films (AMERICAN PSYCHO, PITCH BLACK, DAWN OF THE DEAD) so what Clive talks about doesn't sound too far-fethed.

Clive rocks. I wish he'd stop doing books and art for a while and make more films. I can't wait for TS.
