Silent Night Bloody Night & other earlier horror flicks you like

My local Best Buy had a four-pack movie dvd for 7.99 and the movies in this package were Silent Night Bloody Night, Don't Look In The Basement, Satan's School For Girls, and House on Haunted Hill (the Vincent Price beauty). On a separate note, I found Burnt Offerings for 9.99...though I wondered why that one was two dollars more but anyway, I'm digressing..

Anyone else seen Silent Night Bloody Night and appreciate the early seventies cheese it gives the viewer? What are some other movies you appreciate, barring Argento and the other masters?

Don't Look in the Basement is a good one but my favorite old cheesy flick is Basket Case. Not sure off hand what year that was made in.

It came out in '82. Creepy, plasticized fun =D The earliest horror flick I remember ever really freaking me out was -- believe it or not -- The Manitou. Of course, it's very much laughable now, but as a kid it was heavy-duty stuff ;D

Damn, it's an 80's flick. I'll bring up The Bermuda Depths and SSSSSsssss again to go back to the 70's. I'm pretty sure SSSSssss was in the 70's though again I'm not sure.

DON'T LOOK IN THE BASEMENT is a film I like a lot, as is the cheese that is THREE ON A MEATHOOK ....

HOUSE OF WHIPCORD is a favorite of mine, and while I would never call it cheese ( it's absolutely not ), it's a film that could fit into this discussion ... I love it, and also recommend Peter Walker's FRIGHTMARE .....

But the ultimate film for me that comes to mind when discussing this type of movie is BEYOND THE DOOR .... It might never make it to DVD ( please, anyone ? ), but again, another favorite of mine .....

(By the way, Ssssss was 1973)

The 70's were such a rich time for horror movies.
You didn't have all the baggage and "mythology" that contemporary horror movies bring.

The horror movies of the 70's really showed you that that world was a creepy, monster filled place.

There's such a feeling I get when I watch a creepfest from the 70's - and that's dread.

You really feel like you could go outside and anything could be lurking around the corner.

Also, if you notice, more often than not, a lot of the 70's horror movies take place during the day - during the relative "safe" time.

Good stuff!

My love for 70's horror knows no bounds.

They might make tham bigger and flashier now, but the movies were BETTER back then.

There was such love and innocence and craftsmanship back then.

The filmmakers, no matter how less than amazing the final movie was, actually had pride in their movies.

And the ad campaigns and the marketing spots for the movies were sometimes scarier than the actual movie.

When was the last time you saw a preview of one of today's movies, and were actually afraid to go see the movie in the theatre?

Well, now because the movies of today mostly blow, you could be afraid of seing a bad movie...

But back in the 70's, some of the previews made you afraid to step into the theatre.

The glory days, my friends.

I've talked about this for more times than I can remember, and started enough threads longing for the glory days of 70's-80's horror movies.

I'm just glad there's appreciation out there for these movies.

The late 60's to the early 80's were golden years!

From the fading years of Grindhouse cinema, to the halcyon days of EXploitation, to the peak of gore movie madness.

Great times on both sides of The Atlantic.

A tiny amount of essential viewing:
"TCM"
"Maniac"
"The Love Butcher"
"Basket Case"
"I Spit on your Grave"
"Witchfinder General"
"The Wicker Man"
"The Hills Have Eyes"
"Cannibal Holocaust"http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvcannibalholo.htm
"Zombi 2"
"The Evil Dead"
"Blood on Satan's Claw"http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvbloodsatans.htm
"Kiss of her Flesh"[URL]http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvkiss.htmURL]
"Alucarda" http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvalucarda.htm
"Blood Feast"

Way too many....i'm a huge 'Grindhouse'/Exploitation fan and to me these films are full of something that too many films lack nowadays...Passion and a soul.

And it's not just horror...other essential viewing from that time:

"Pink Flamingos" http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvFlamingos.htm
"Fight for Your Life"http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvfight.htm
"The Exterminator"
"Deadly Weapons" http://www.beardyfreak.com/rvWeapons.htm
"Death Wish"
"Thundercrack"
"The Street Fighter"
"Salon Kitty"
"Raw Force"

Jean Rollin's Living Dead Girl
Firm favourite The Changeling
Jess Franco's Faceless
I'll second Elmie's Frightmare (though for the love of Hicks stay away from Die Screaming Marianne)
Mark Of The Devil
Ms .45
Romano Scavolini's Nightmares In A Damaged Brain which while hokey and cheap is notable for first featuring the old Argento/De Palma trick of a character bending down to reveal the killer standing directly behind them.

Good times.
