Starship Troopers 2

Saw it. You know what? I really liked it.

It's NOTHING like the first film, which I loved to death, and I feel that's why it suceeds. Imagine The Thing meets Alien and your halfway there. It's not
as good as those two classics, obviously, but it's still a fun time. The tension here though isn't whose infected, it's that over time the last human soldiers eventually are overrun by the bugs and don't even know it.

The effects.........for such a low budget movie, the effects are amazing. Actually, scratch that, they are amazing for any movie. But that's what you should expect when the director is Phil Tippet.

It knows its limitations and disguses them fairly well. The ending...... it's not really a twist ending, but boy does it pack a punch.

I liked it too. For people to get an idea of what it's like, imagine Troopers as Aliens and Trropers 2 as Alien. And by God yes, the SFX in this film are fantastic. They are the best thing about the film in my opinion. It's a good film, certainly doesn't taint the original. But the final act is very sloppily handled and inconsistent.

Do you think it's worth getting the Region 2 double bill of StarShip Troopers and Starship Troopers 2? I can't work out if the original is the theatrical cut, or the special edition (or whatever it was called), which I have on VHS...or worth trying to get them seperately...I definitely want the original in the most expanded version possible, and I'm not sure the one on the double DVD will cut it...

Any ideas?

The cover of this DVD made me laugh because the expression on Dax is priceless! The actor playing Dax kind of reminded me of the original survivor Richard Hatch, but I didn't hold it against him. I was hopeful when I bought this movie, but I wasn't expecting much. I was surprised that I liked it as much as I did. It's kind of like Pitch Black plus The Thing with bugs by The Hidden and I thought it was pretty good for DTV release. The only problem is that it says Starship Troopers on the cover and I can't figure out why that movie didn't get a big budget follow up. The effects and the DTS audio track were awesome and the last half hour had some nice icky horror moments.

i watched this one last night also. i'm a big fan of the first film and was scared when i heard they went the "low budget, direct to video route".

luckily this movie turned out pretty well imho. reminded me alot of a starship troopers chronicles tv episode but it was done very well.

it's obviously tippett's first shot at directing. he does a decent job but i felt he shot too much of it "up close" ie panned in. most of the time, the camera seems like it's plastered right in front of the actor's faces. what the fuck do i know though? i haven't directed jack shit so who knows.

the effects were solid and fun. no skimping on the gore and i liked the story. the fact the movie "felt" like "aliens" in places surely helped it.(heck, most of the movie is basically "aliens" now that i think about it....)

all the actors do fine jobs with what they've got. the script is decent. there's some good action set pieces, the effects are great....it's a good, fun, pop corn flick and a worthy sequel imho.

definately better than i expected! they really could have fucked this one badly but they pulled it off pretty well for what they had to work with.

recommended!

now where is foywonder's review? that should be interesting.

did you notice how it was a commentary on communism and terrorism? that kind of threw me for a loop. didnt expect that on a straight to video flick.

I wasn't even going to bother with this because I figured there was no chance it could be anything of quality.

You guys have talked me into it though - I'll be checking it out.

I think it was more of a commentary on jingoism and the way that personal ideals can be co-opted in the name of blind patriotism, personally. But that was just my interpretation.

I really liked this movie. Definitely one of the best direct to video sequels I've ever seen. Nothing spectacular though.

The new bugs were actually pretty sweet.

I was worried in the beginning though, as everything seemed to be recycled footage (the cgi, I mean). And total agreement on the main character looking like Richard Hatch.

I think Dax was both an excellent character and played by an excellent actor. You can see how better the film would have been with a bigger budget but it still doesn't falter an already good film. I'm glad we have this opposed to no sequel at all.

Wrong thread.

The movie was very good.
I liked the alien SFX, they did a bang-up job. Also did a great job with the "alien/zombies".

Only gripe I had with it was when they shot their weapons, it looked like they were firing a flashlight from the muzzle!!

'Sides that, very solid D-T-V movie.

Dax, IMHO, was a "BAD-MOFO"!

The legend of Richard Burgi

This movie was a fuckin' disgrace.

I bowed out of it the minute I saw actress Brenda Strong, who played a character that died in the first film and is now in a new role altogether. Fuck that.

I shut this movie down about thirty-minutes in. Damn shame, I'm a huge fan of the first film.

The score sounds like it was ripped from Billy Madison.
if you want to describe this flick to someone just tell them its part Assault on Precinct 13 and part The Hidden (as someone else mentioned)

not great but decent

Very good movie. I am not that big of a fan of the first and its TV commercials strewn everywhere thoughout but this one surprised the hell out of me. Great, nope, amazing job with the FX. Nice decapitation, head busted open, limbs coming off and of course the requisite bug foot/spear through the chest among others. The acting and dialogue were not as cheesy as the first though still a bit cheesy. The pace was great and it really gets going strong from beginning and doesn't let up until the very end. It is bookended by the commercial spots but it was easier to take. Did not expect the full frontal of the hot blonde at all. Pleasant surprise there. I totally recommend this flick to everyone and Ryan toss that puppy back in and watch the whole thing for christs sake.

I'm gonna go buy the DVD now. I'm sure I'll watch it several more times.

that's your reason? then im guessing you didnt like the re-make of open your eyes? lol

its not as high quality as the first film but its still fun and with a bigger budget could've been excellent.
No I had other reasons, that was one that irked me more than anything...oh, that and the fact that a team of, what, 10 troopers could take on a fuckin' swarm of bugs while hiding behind paintball barriers and live to tell about it. Based on the odds depicted in the first film, I could never believe this.
Well, *I* liked it okay...

You should give it another shot, Ryan. After the admittedly clunky first twenty minutes or so, Tippett stops trying to match the epic action scope of the first film and just settles for some low-budget splatter and nastiness. There's some pretty great gore scenes in the last half hour that really redeemed the flick for me. It'll never be mistaken for a good movie, but if you're in the right mood, it's a pretty fun movie.
Brenda Strong's last two scenes are priceless...

That's one of the things I did not like.

SPOILERS

The bugs infect you and kill you from what I understood, so how did that female officer manage to fight it?

Stay away from the Dollars trilogy!

Ryan....

SPOILERS

The bugs didn't want to kill them all dude they had a plan.
Hmmm. Well, it's outta my hands now and back at the video store. Perhaps next time, when my tolerance for crap is a bit higher.
Next time skip the first half and watch the second. You missed all the great gore man. How disappointing.
