Marvel or DC hero's - who has ya heart?

Now Im not putting this in the comic section simply because it doesn't apply only to comic fans - but superhero fans in general.

I, for one, have never collected the comics of my favourite heroes for example.

Im just interested in whether people around here prefer the hero stable of DC or of Marvel - which characters are your favourite? Who do you feel the biggest emotional connection too and why?

I'd have to say that, besides Spidey (and at a pinch F4), Im pretty much a DC boy all the way.

Maybe it was growing up with the Superman films or the Superfriendsm or later with Burtons original Batman? I'd definately say Batman:Animated played a big part in the Bat becoming my favourote hero, but the DC guys always seemed more prominant in the media when I was growing up - whereas today I'd say thats been completely reversed.

Now my Spidey and F4 love come from growing up with the cartoons - Spidey in particular - but Ive just never gotten the big deal about the X-Men for example, or Daredevil or The Punisher.

The Hulk is probably the only other Marvel character I rate up there - but I was never allowed to watch the Bill Bixby show growing up as it gave me nightmares.

So yeah, I'd have to say the DC universe wins out for me simply because, if you weren't a comic reader back when I was growing up, you lived in a DC world when it came to superheros.

Which side do you fall on and why?

I've been a hardcore Marvelite as far back as I can remember in my life, with my second Holy Trilogy being Daredevil, Punisher, and Spider-man. It probably started when I was raised on Fox Kids, with their Saturday mornings of X-Men and Spider-Man animated glory, and then my interest spilled over into the comics. I would get the occasional DC comic book, but aside from Batman none of their characters struck me as very interesting. Everyone I know who likes comics (with the exception of two people) follow what seems to be the standard view on comics: "Marvel and Batman fan. The rest of DC sucks."

Fair enough - I take it you were growing up in the 90's then?

See my era was well and truely the very late seventies and the eighties really.

And fuck me I love the Flash. The TV series from the very early nineties fuckin ruled IMO.

Tony Stark does get props from me for his beautiful faults and failings - another Marvel guy who I must tip my hat to.

why marvel? call me a 'realist' i guess.. but i could always relate on a personal level to marvel heroes over dc heroes (with the big exception being batman who is my favourite hero in any company)

i dunno.. to me..theres something very human about the marvel heroes.. or in some cases anti-heroes... Punisher.. hell.. everyone can relate to him... he lost his entire family becuase he did the right thing and stood up against the bad guys.. bad guys who he now enacts bloody revenge against.. theres something very down-to-earth about the primal themes in that book.. its just very gritty and dark.. its life, flashy and unrealistic at times.. but closer than the Green fricken Lantern could ever get.... Iron Man and alcoholism is also somethign alot of people should be able to relate to... Henry Pym the wife-beater... Bruce Banner and his anger management... X-men and discrimination.. theres very powerful human themes in most 'big' Marvel franchises.. and they always stood out more for me than the bubblegum and lollipop world DC seems to revolve in, with a few good exceptions (Bats, Flash, Green Arrow *wasnt his nephew a heroin addict or something*.. im not huge on my DC lore but something like that)

me.. i cant relate to superman at ALL... hes not a human being... hes immortal (or, almost).. can fly, shoot heat vision.. blah blah.. not because of some terrible accident that granted him powers or a thirst for bloody revenge or lots of money to build armored suits.. but becuase hes a goddamn Alien... plus.. hes all about the American dream and im quite Canadian.. so.. never cared for Big Blue at all... i think Batman can take him

same goes for 9/10 of the well-known DC lineup...(im supposed to believe a guy runs around in a Robin Hood suit shooting punching glove arrows at people?... etc etc) .. it just really pulls me out of those books

For me it's pretty much Wildstorm and Vertigo all the way, so... I tend toward liking DC. Not for Superman at all -- I don't care about that. Batman's more interesting, but I'm more interested in Gotham Central than any mainstream Batman comic.

Of course, I also enjoy a lot of the Marvel stuff. But then, I never really got into comics until last year. I've just been borrowing a ton of shit from my friend's ginormous archive, so I never grew up with some demented fanboy zealotry, if such a thing exists.

Practically grew up on the old Batman TV show, therefore he's got my heart wrapped snugly - not tightly - around him. But at about ten years I discovered Spider-Man and the whole world changed.

It's been a MARVEL world ever since.

I never read that much comics. Some, for sure, but never a whole lot. When I did, it was Spider-man and Daredevil (this was during the Frank Miller era!). They are still two of my favorite characters.

But these days, it's Batman all the way. No character can hold a candle to him.
