The Eye

I watched The Eye on Showtime yesterday and I have to say, it sucked. There was maybe two creepy images, but not "scary" at all. The gay music that accompanied just about every scene totally took away from any kind of horrific (did I spell that correct?) moments. It was just a cheap rip-off of the Sixth Sense.

You need to further add that the Sixth Sense is a ripoff of Carnival of Souls and/or Dead and Buried.

I've been saying this for months. What's the deal with the overabundance of love for this film?

I love Asian films, but it's like just because it's Japanese its given so much more credit than it deserves.

Dead and Buried? How? Because it has a twist? I don't see that at all.
No, not just because of the twist. The whole "concept" was exactly the same.

Just watch Dead and Buried again and you'll see.

Spoilers...

Man died but doesn't know he's dead.

End spoilers.

I thought the Eye was ok, not nearly as good as Ringu though. Has anyone seen Kairo? Its a Kiyoshi Kurasawa film and it creeped the shit out of me. There aren't really any big scares in it but the mood and the atmosphere of the whole film was very unsettling. Add that to the fact that it doens't really explain a whole lot of what is going on.

I enjoyed this movie. There have been several threads about this film that I've posted in before but I'm too lazy to find them. I thought that the few "scares" were well placed and shot decently. The only thing that I didn't like was the ending - it seemed tacked on to me.

Oh and could we not refer to the shitty music as gay? But yeah, it could have been a little better.

EDIT

I saw Kairo too and I enjoyed it. The first time I watched it I was pretty confused though. You're right they don't explain much at all. Good atmosphere though.

Anyone have anything good to say about "Another Heaven"? This was on the Sundance channel last night and I set the VCR to tape it (it was too late for me to stay up).
Just wondering if it would be worth my time to sit down and watch it.

Not really worth it. It's pretty much a mix of Se7en and the Thing, but not very good and with a drawn out ending. I was surprised how god the film looked though (transfer wise). Then again watch it if you want. I generally find most Japanese slow burn horror films run of the mill save for maybe Kairo and Miikes' Audition.

I don't know. I see much more criticism for this film than love. I'm starting to feel like a freak for liking it. You bastards are making me doubt my own judgement. I watch a lot of Asian horror, not because it's trendy but because at the very least, it's usually interesting. It's hit and miss, really. I thought The Eye was very good. More Americanized than most Asian horror, but good. I think the parts that work far outweigh what doesn't.

I also don't get the link between the Sixth sense and Dead & Buried. despite the one similarity, they're completely different films.

With the exception of an ending that did seem tacked on upon first viewing, I feel that THE EYE was an excellent film, and while IMHO not in the league of TALE OF TWO SISTERS, the attention saddness and sorrow was not lost on me ...... I appreciate subtlety in a film, and THE EYE was both scary and thoughtful ...

No offense, both I take reviews that read like "it sucked, and the music was gay" with a grain of salt ....

I thought it was a pretty good movie, though as has been mentioned already, it does owe a lot to Sixth Sense... I'll be checking out the sequel whenever it comes out with some sort of English dialogue.

I'm sorry. You must have me confused with Gene Shalett. I was just stating my opion, I wasn't trying to wow people with my vocabulary.

....and another thing, salt is delicious!

We may disagree on salt and THE EYE , but I respect a poster who can give it back to me

Well atleast theres a few of us that like it.

I liked The Eye. Although it did seem to peter out with 45 minutes left, it did contain 3 really good scares. I mean REALLY GOOD scares. I don't see the comparison with Dead and Buried.

It's my understanding that an American remake of The Eye is being talked about now. Maybe that one will meet with more favor amongst the CHUD chewers.

I liked this movie alot.

SPOILERS>>>>>>

When you w tched it, was it in english? or was it Sub-titled? Seems that makes a differrence to me, so maybe others will see a differrence also.

The thing I like about this movie is never really stated. Here is a girl blind for almost her entire life, and now she is regaining her sight, and it is blurry and indistinct at first. And now she sees things and is not sure what she is seeing.

To us, a dark man with no face is definately odd. People with no eyes, or perhaps long wicked tongues, these seem freaky to us. But to her? How does she know that is not what everyone sees? The brilliant part of this is that you have a central char4acter who does not realize things might be out of place.

Take the rail. Brilliant scene. Here they sit talking, and as the train passes certain dark objects, you see the reflection of the eyeless woman sitting across from her. it is subtle, and it catches you off guard, and she does not even react to it. She may not realize it is out of place.

The payoff for scenes like that are great.

So for me, if you really look into that character, and consider that she has NO idea what normal life looks like, then the happenings in this film are that much more intriguing.

I always try to watch foriegn films with subtitles. Bad dubbing can ruin a movie.

The ending shortchanged the rest of the movie. It really felt like they jsut og there and needed a big climax so that's what they went with. I would have liked to see something smaller scale and more personal.

The elevator scene makes to movie worth while for me on its strength alone.
I loved the first part of the movie... but it seemed that it lost more and more in the horror the nearer the end it got. In an urge to explain everything, the movie lost some of it´s power. And yes, the ending felt very overblown.

But even though the ending of the movie was rather weak.... there are so many parts in the first half that scared the shit out of me. The elevator scene is a future horror classic, as is some of the sequences in the hospital.

But for me it begins to fall apart when the brothers start to give away the explanation for everything.
You know what, yeah. I totally agree with the camp that liked the first half or so. It was good for awhile, but that was partially because a goodd deal of the "J-horror" I'd seen had the slow build formula. Films like Uzumaki or The Ring where things just get worse and worse and more suspenseful as it goes on. The Eye just petered out pretty fast after a somewhat suspenseful first half. The ending with the (SPOILER)..........traffic was just out of place and reminded me of The Mothman Prophecies too damn much. I'm not saying it was a stolen moment (obviously not), it's just the whole thing about helping the girl's spirit rest and the mom and everything was just crap. It did have some decent jump moments though. (DONE SPOILING)

I want to see Two Sisters so bad though.

The thing is, the lead character announces the point at which you will no longer be scared. She says something like " At least I will get to see the ones I love".......It's right after the little girl dies. The directors more or less announce "hey we're done scaring you, from now on this is strictly drama."

Still, the scene in the hospital, the scene in the elevator, and the scene in the calligrapher's parlor ("I said, what are you doing in my chair!?!?!??!!?!" are scary as hell, and furthermore, the gratuitously licking chick at the restaurant was pretty creepy too.
Flawed movie, maybe, but this movie WAS scary, no doubt about it.
