Reasons The CHUD Message Boards are at an All-Time Lull...

- The Boards Jumped the Shark when Kirby went from Innocent X to Dudley and the Bike Shop Owner...

- People grow up and have better shit to do...

- 99% of The Old Guard have become caricatures of themselves...

- Too many forums and too many posts 'shoved away' that aren't worth looking for...

- There are just so many times one can discuss the same bullshit...

- No one gives a shit who Uncle Mitch is anymore...

- Shelby's stopped feeding us our daily requirement of porn...

- All the good themes have been used up, turned into theme parks...

- Werbal Kint and the generation he belongs to are just not compelling enough for us grown ups. Like The New Mickey Mouse Club or Saved by the Bell: The New Class...

- The good Chewers die young...

- Too many threads are hijacked by the same three witless types...

- Star Chamber still roams the halls from midnight to one in a neverending search for Hal Holbrook...

- Will has stopped posting. He was the glue that held this place together...

- When people forget the Lowshots and chenzzos of the world, the magic which this place had and made it special dies...

- The whole Scorched Planet bullshit gave it a terminal case of the ain't worth it no mores...

- Michael Bay isn't funny anymore...

- Otik is a poor man's nu wave Ludwig. Although he probably enjoys the caribou as much...

- The keg ran out a year ago and we're too cheap to tap a new one...

- People have gotten so lazy, twisted, and bitter that they can't tell when your making a crack on something as idiotic as THUNDERBIRDS...

- No good Chewer Events or sagas. No CHUDWest. No Swedish Kroner. No Nunizatas of the Caribbean where pirates steal his Gameboy but not his CHUD T-shirt...

Jan De Bont took the reins of this place at some point when we weren't looking. Thems the facts.

And knowing is half the battle...

Agreed on most points, Django.

Not sure which delegation of chewers I belong to, and I don't really care. I pretty much come here to report music news and talk about music, The Sopranos, and hit up the main pages on CHUD and Creature Corner for news.

I also got tired of some chewers becoming the "be all end all of coolness." Where every post became "Why I'm Better Than You."

That is why I post only in the sports thread. I really do not feel like checking my grammar 30 times every time I post because some Tool is going to check me on it. Then there is some lame joke made. I like the message boards, but at some point every single thread becoming some anti-Bush/anti-Kerry, anti-Matrix, anti-Star Wars, etc. wears on you. I continue to post, and will continue to, since there are a lot of great people on the mb's. But, you speak the truth.
I don't know; I like it around here. Most of the people are intelligent and I've enjoyed some of these threads. Of course, I could be seen as a problem as well. Who knows?

And last week someone pulled my card by quoting me because I said "lol" so I can see why there would be people that'd stick solely to the Sports Forum or wherever else to avoid that shit. Although that person was a newbie (I think), was it not an old guard member that started a thread about a member here (Fatboy something?) because they signed each of their posts? I think it's working both ways on the "I'm better than you" crap.

Because they don't have this kind of comedy:

I know Someone is going to contact me about mass producing that Van Damme shirt, though.
The new forums are gonna miss all my Van Damme threads, mark my words.
I've thought this before the new boards idea but elitism is a big problem. The old members in their own sort of click and pushing down any new members, instead of helping show what type of behavior is expected on the boards.

Also elitism in terms of attitude and forcefull opinions.

Philistine.

To clear up a couple of things...

I should say, "Anymore, I come here to..."

Whereas, a few months back, I was much more personal here. I enjoyed the boards and people alot more than now. Lesson learned, I suppose, due to several of Django's points.

Also, the elitism DOES go both ways. I've come across that way sometimes too in the past, and it was stupid.
I was having a little fun for a while in the politics forum again. Then it got old...quickly. All boring. All the time. I doubt I'll have a third wind as far as CHUD is concerned.

At least I reached the mythical 5,000......
5,000.... pffftt! I've been here 8 months and I'm almost to that point.

There IS something to be said for "quality" vs "quantity".
Yeah! And I've got both! Am I not amazing?
As Werbal does his best to prove Django's point(s).

Great thread, by the way. I fully expect to see it hijacked as quickly as possible.
I hope I'm on CHUD long enough to complain about the way things used to be.
Yeah, that would be great. I can't think of anything better.

Exactly. This is the biggest annoyance around here lately. There was a time when anyone could post here without getting too much shit. You could just talk about films, kill some time and have fun. Lately it seems to be a breeding ground for pompous elitists who are only here to prove they've seen a more obscure French film than you have and obviously understand film more than you ever will. It's extremely boring to read and even more boring to try post without setting off some ego landmine.
Sure, some of the topics get brought up a million times and some of them are very boring to you. How about ignoring it then? Some of these stale topics are fresh to some people and others just like talking about films and getting other people's opinions.
Worst of all, it's some of the CHUD "elders" who have turned into the biggest trolls. Some of the people who are supposed to garner the most respect are actually the biggest fuckheads who contribute the least. Here's a hint - if you don't want the majority of us posting here, make it a fucking boutique board and kick us all off. At least we'll know from the start that we aren't wanted.
Sorry if you don't like the complaints, but if you're getting upset then you're probably part of the problem.

Exactly, the point of this board is to INTERACT with each other to learn from each other. Not just one side of the fence. That hasn't been happening enough.
Wrong.

The lull was two or three months ago. Now we have lots to bitch about.

I hope my relative absence from the boards hasn't harmed anyone's innerspace (or any actors/crew from the movie Innerspace).

You're full of shit.

This "French film" crap is non-existent. It's a fictitious tale. You concocted it to make this board seem pretentious. Film wise, this board doesn't put a tippy-tow into the territory of snooty. Not unless you have examples. So what's your deal? Not putting-up with the criticisms pulled-out for the dull-witted and mediocre posters?

The sad irony of your accusations of pretense is that they imply facade; in order to be pretentious, you have to be ignorant. You don't state why the "pompous elitists" are uninformed provincials. You seem ignorant to reasons for which these people are critical (who are these "pompous" individuals?). Indeed, your accusations of elitism are pretense.

Alton Brown says threads like this are Good Eats.

When people stopped realizing that this is a MESSAGE BOARD where people come to have fun and interact, that is when the boards became a drag.

Ironically, some of the same people lamenting that the "new" people are ruining things are doing EXACTLY the same things they are slamming other people about...

But that must be ok, since they were here longer and they are beyond reproach.

For fuck's sake people, this is the Internet, where your going to find people with other interests or opinions.

Get over it.

And before you sit in your ivory castles lording your message board superiority on everyone, look what you are pushing:

You're one of the Kings of an internet message board...does that make the cheating wife, or the weight problem, or the beating husband, or the poor job, or the harping parents go away?

Why not cut out the middle man and just play Dungeons & Dragons already?

You can be Dungeon Master and be lord of another world if you need that superiority so much.

Everyone needs to lighten up.

It's reasons like this that Scorched Planet make fun of this place and all of us everyday.

Jesus Christ, SP has it figured out...we need to lighten up, have fun and get with it.
Well...as a major Newbie (on this board anyway) I feel the need to really piss the regulars off and ask....What the hell's a 'Chewer'?

I thank you in advance.
A suggestion: Instead of "some of the elders/newbies/whatever have done X" being a reason that things are not as you like, why not name names and give examples? Generalized whining isn't really applicable to anyone or anything.

People should be free to air grievances, but if you have a problem with a specific person or group of people, just name them, confront them, and get it over with.
I would like to see more tolerance for all types of people and views.

Some of the "old-guard" are quick to call names like moron, imbecile when people are just trying to express a different opinion.

I would also like to remind people that we are not all as intelligent as some of you are. Just because I may misspell a word or my grammar is not as good as others does not mean that my view is not as relevant as yours.

Ok, whining mode off.

I've been here only a year and a half, but I've been seeing threads like this since I joined.

Just when were the good old days?
Hell if I know.

I thought they were here all the time.

Oh, and sorry, Hester, not my style. I refuse to start a flame war over petty bullshit.
But what does the generalized whining/ranting do? Sure, you get it off your chest, but then any "old guard" reading this - whether it applies to them or not - start wondering whether it's about them. And that affects how they interact with you.

So you've solved nothing, but possibly done a lot of damage. That's what I mean. Enough with the innuendo and whispers.
I'm confused. I mean, more than usual.

What's exactly so different about the boards now except that a new bunch of people (gruber, Otik, et al) that post every minute of the day in every single thread has replaced the old axis of people that posted every single day in every single thread (Rath, Verbal, et al) after they replaced the previous axis, back to the point when *I* and my brood-siblings posted every minute of every day in every single thread... and so on.

And whilst I'm on the subject, can someone clarify something for me? I registered in 2002, so should I feel like an "old guard" person whose Elysian Fields of messageboard joy have been despoiled by pic-posting barbarians, or should I feel like a helpless n00b having my creativity quashed by the Man? In short, should I feel like the crazy old man turning the hose on the kids on his lawn or like the young punk who dreams away his detention fantasising about how I'm totally going to ream the older members out on my blog later becuz ther liek tota11y jeluz?1!?

I really need to know how to feel about this so I can post inane and self-serving nonsense about it. Any help would be appreciated - thanks!

Yes, but what good does it do me to call someone out who does not have to play by the same rules I do?

There you go.

The good old days, for those confused, were three to four years ago. Many of those threads were lost in various board screwups.

Devin, I assume?

I don't think he'd start a flame war with you. He openly admits to doing many of the things people dislike him for.

Christ, people. Let it go. Move on.
Well, I'm done with this anyway, simply because I like these boards, I like being here, I like helping out, and I don't want to jeopardize that.

I guess I'm just disappointed in some of the recent turns of events. People are probably going to say that it's just sour grapes, but I don't think this exclusionary thing is going to help in any way.

Thanks for taking the time to answer me, Micah.

This is as laughable as the time the VDEB was crying because it wasn't like it used to be...FOUR YEARS AGO. How dare people come and go? How dare we let new people in? (Another message board, in case you're wondering folks.)

Can someone clue me in as to how many times this issue's been brought up over the history of your message board? Are there any key members that are brought up as well?

I think Nick has a good idea but his execution of it was laughable. Lesson learned, eh dear? Invisible forums are wonderful things to have, trust me, I know. At least next time this gets brought up again..say, three or four months down the line, you'll already have the chafe separated from the wheat. Why not give your tired, your weary masses a forum for themselves, them being the 'good and intelligent' ones, the 'old-style' chewers. Why not? It's your board, your rules. Are there rules here? Did I miss that thread?

Micah, a suggestion, if I may? You are one of the higher ups here so you have certain powers. Why not go into the many forums you have here and delete some of the tripe and then post rules as to what is and what isn't acceptable? Self-policing oneself only goes so far unless there are clear, defined guidelines as to what is appropriate or not. If you have X amount of members that post here, trying to make everyone get along is like herding cats. Know what I mean? If some of my threads or posts are deleted, I won't cry. I know you're doing it for the interest of the board. Some of the members here have even created their own boards to keep as much of their tripe off of here, out of respect. By the way, that was nice of you to link from that board, Devin. I would've expected nothing less from you and as always, you didn't disappoint me.

I could say more but then as no one is reading this anyway I'll stop here.

And I want to state on the internet that Alice and Kitty deserve their heart's desire. Thank you, ladies, for making sense. Sincerely.

Remember the time this all happened with kiteless and purple_hazed? Man, those guys sucked a lot. Yet I look back at them with fondness!

Farina, that won't happen. I'm just an admin, not a parent. Obvious trolls get the boot, but beyond that....one man's Dan Whitehead is another man's Otik. I'm not here to remake the boards in my image.

I respect your ideas, Micah, I really do. Thank you for your response, by the way.

My point is that if you have no structure to your board and only hope that people will follow the main mentality that is here (whatever that may be), you will keep on having these headaches. This topic will never end for you. You'll never hear the end of people bitching about he or she. Your most revered members will resort to TROLL-like behavior out of desperation because things will NEVER be the same. EVER.

Message boards ebb and flow, they change for better or worse. If you wish to preserve it then lock your doors to the outside world. That is my point.
Speaking of a lull in the boards, where's Dan Whitehead lately? I need an outlet for my passive/aggressive man-love.

Oh well, as long as I'm around, the boards will always be grand. Who wants a martini?
