Special Edition column

First installment of CHUD's new weekly DVD column. I'd like feedback, so if you read it, let me know what you like/dislike. I plan on playing around with things each week, so please let me know what works and what doesn't.

I thought Ron Howard was originally supposed to direct THE ALAMO. Who is Ron Wilson?

Since I can get disc specs and cover art from a bajillion other sites, I would more interested in detailed reviews, retrospectives and editorials about the past, present and future of DVD. Maybe have some DVD-specific interviews with directors, producers, writers, etc. Or some DVD production journals like the PANIC ROOM one that The Digital Bits recently ran.

Seems like you have an opportunity to do something really cool here. It would be great if you didn't follow the same ol', same ol' that other sites have been churning out for years.

Best of luck!

Thanks for the comments. The Ron Wilson mistake is baffling, I don't know how I managed to pull that one off.

As for your recommendations, I hope the column will grow over the next few weeks. I'd like to report the latest announcements, but also incorporate some of the things that you mentioned. Reviews, however, are already covered on the site, so I won't be writing any full-length reviews in the column.

The former coach of the Capitals and Mighty Ducks gets a ref!

Nothing like a good Ken Hitchcock movie!
Good column, I'll keep reading it. I like the suggestions from Litmus: Reviews, editorials, interviews etc - it'll be really cool.
Nice column, now I'm even more interested with the SCTV set. I caught an episode yesterday where they're all trapped in a burning building, pretty cool to see Eugene Levy doing something other than his American Pie shtick. ["THIS PLACE IS GONNA BURN DOWN LIKE A MATCH!" *jumps out the window] I will buy it if they're all as good as that episode.

[P.S. it seems jumping through a window is the sign of a good show, i.e simpsons]

#2 is up.

The first column was a little late on my end. From here on out, the column should regularly show up on Mondays.

It's nice when a mostly informational DVD column is also funny. I like it. I don't think it needs to be every week, but I'd like to see an editorial on DVD-related issues included once in a while.
I liked reading your second column.

You had some funny stuff in there.

Good job.
I like the addition of "Cheapest place to buy..." portion to the column. That's my biggest gripe is that as soon as I buy somewhere, someone else finds it for like $5-$10 cheaper.

Dog Vs. Robert. Brilliant.

Keep up the good work.

Good column. I'm glad to see that Eternal Sunshine is coming to DVD in a few months. I didn't get to see it in the theater, but I'll most definitely pick this one up when it comes out.

But I have to disagree on the SW DVD art. I don't think it's that bad. I haven't thought that the first two DVD's in the PT were that bad either. Sure, the original artwork on the OT set and some similarly great artwork for the PT DVDs would be nice, but I don't think that they suck. Personally, I've never been that affected by DVD artwork. Sure, I'll pick up an occasional movie just because the packaging has caught my eye and I've said "hey, I've been meaning to get that". But I don't think I've ever turned my nose up at a movie I knew I wanted and not bought it just because the packaging wasn't a stunning work of art. But, meh, who cares, right? To each his own, I suppose.
the covers are ok.. but of course this would be cooler

Good work man. You've got some nice comedy gems in your writing.

I'm glad you give a quick rundown of the Tuesday releases. I think that the biggest thing that I would like to see CHUD have weekly. We all spend our kid's college money on DVDs, so it would be nice to see the big releases at least. I know there's way too many to list them all.

Looking forward to next week.

Thanks for the note about Skeleton of Cadavera. Didn't know it was being released this week. I'll have to stop by Ballbuster and see if they have it. Also enjoyed the bit about Boa vs. Python. I watched this on SciFi, and found out a week ago that my niece actually owns the DVD version of Python. Bless her heart.

New one's really good. I especially enjoyed the digs on the braves & angel.

I love the column flyarz. I really dig the bit at the end where you show some interesting prices of DVD and where you saw them. That can come in real handy.

Re: Special Edition column

Nice job, John.

You are slipping into the fold of things nicely with your whipsmart comments that CHUD articles are known for.

Keep up the good work!

Re: Special Edition column

I've only now realised that flyarz is the man behind this column. It's really great - pushing me dangerously close to using the phrase "LOL" in a non-sarcastic fashion.

And that Spidey '67 cartoon set...oh mama.

Thank you for this:

Like the bargin bin and the What's new lists. Now I can scan your article and remind myself of anything to look for while at Best Buy. Keep up the great work!

Nice column flyarz. I'd try and talk to you, but you'll probably just blow me off, 'cause you're weird like that.

Either way, I like the commentary sprinkled with satire and humor.
A little sarcasm goes a long way. A lot of sarcasm makes you look like a jack ass. But I've always know that about you, John. Anyway, good column. I especially liked the bit about stabbing your friend in the face with your Riddler cane. Whether or not it really happened, it made me laugh.

Updates are g-g-good.

So did Microsoft really distribute "Buddy Holly" with Windows 95?

Yup. First time that I listened to Weezer was when I watched the vid on Win 95.
"But hey, remember when “Buddy Holly” was included with Windows 95? That was cool. I’m sorry. I need help."

Funniest, most obscure reference I've read all week. . . Bravo

I love your column. The jab at Burton, the King hate, the incomprehensible Ronald McDonald story, the Will Smith confession, the floating head joke, the slam on Fox jabbing us for extra money on the DVD rip-off. All of it laugh out loud funny and all of it platinum.

Great job. I look forward to these.

Also, you have a girl's name for a last name. Ha ha.

John, you couldn't possibly be any funnier. If you could, then God help us all.

Great column. I'm really digging the hell out of it.

The Bargain Bin is a wonderful resource as well. Good looking out.

Love the Heathcliff bit. Love the column. Don't really care for the Baha Men. Is there a hate thread for that?

*edit-you probably won't get the bitch part. It's from the show.

Good crap did that column make me laugh. And it's stuffed with DVD info goodness. Very well done, flyarz.

Predator SE isn't a major release? That's the only one I'm excited about this week (I'm holding off for a Kill Bill set and Freaks frightens me too much for me to own it).
