Guess who's back? Back again...

I took Peru by storm and lived to tell about it. In 2 weeks I visited Lima, Cuzco, Puno & Mira Flores; I hiked the Inca Trail for 4 days to get to Machu Picchu; I saw a half dozen Incan ruins; I went white water rafting & horse back riding; and I went to Lake Titicaca (I love saying that) to visit Las Islas Flotantes and Taquile. Oh, I also bought a huge supply of Valium and chewed on a lot of coca leaves (aka cocaine in leaf form)!

I must say though, there's no place like home. Viva Nueva York!
Wow, it sounds like you had an awesome time.

What did you think of the Incan ruins? We went to Chichen Itza while on our honeymoon and it fascinated me. I've done quite a bit of reading up on the Mayans since.

Welcome back.

Good to hear you made it back alive. Also glad to hear that it sounds like your vacation was more along the lines of Romancing the Stone and not Mosquito Coast.

I've always wanted to visit South American ruins of some kind, but dammit if I'm a student and not able to afford vacations... anywhere.

And is it just me, or does Macchu Piccu sound like a delicious dessert?

You got married already?! I feel like it was yesterday you got engaged. Congrats!

The ruins were great. But after a week I was a bit ruined out. Machu Picchu, however, is just magnificent. It is tucked away in a cloud forest in a mountain valley. But it is so huge and still quite a sight to see. I'll post pics later.

My trip was paid for by school loans. I consider it a school expense, don't you?

YAY! You're back! With Valium!
Sounds great, hon! I wish I could've been on a two week vacation as well.
Sounds like you had the ultimate trip. I'm jealous.

Welcome back.

I haven't had to take out any loans yet, but when I do, I'll be sure to spend them as much as possible!

We originally asked for uppers, but they didn't have any. Try doing that in shaky Spanish. Necesito drugas...muy fuerte!

Glad to hear that you've had a good time and made it back safely.

Customs would LOVE that!

Oh Gracie, I'm in San Diego from July 16-26. Are you free to do lunch, dinner, drinks, and/or all of the above during that time?
Sounds absolutely awesome - I always wanted to check out the Mesoamerican ruins, and Macchu Picchu. And my jealousy over the horseback riding floods over me like a river.

Was it round Macchu Picchu that Joe Simpson had his whole Touching The Void "Oh God I need a bandaid" experience?

That said, I had my first proper holiday in a millenium a week ago, and went to Orkney and Skye in Scotland. It wasn't South America but it was pretty cool if you like that kind of thing, which happily I do. Except I twisted my ankle in France the week before, and it whinged the whole time. No pony trekking for me!

Kitty - likewise on the "You're *married* already? Holy shit." Congratulations, my dear!

That sounds cool. I hope your friend is doing well. PM me as the date approaches.

Sounds like an awesome vacation! Post pics! Post pics!

How was the coca leaves? Do you get anything from chewing them? Also curious about the hike, did you do it all on foot? I hope for your sake is was on horseback, especially if it was going up the mountains.

Glad you are back, safe and sound.

Viva la coca! Yes, you get much energy from chewing them. In fact, its what we chewed to help us climb the mountains...on foot!

*Edited to say, the picture was supposed to be just the coca leaves, but its from a NY Times article about a new Peruvian energy drink made out of coca leaves, so you get a photo of that as well.

Fantastic photos, Diva. The arrival at Machu Picchu is especially amazing.

I LOVE stuff like that. You're making me want to go dig my Death Valley and Belize photo albums out of the moving boxes.

Yeah, what the hell? I liked Bunny. There are far worse posters than him around here who don't get banned. I don't get what sparked this.

You should. Going through old photos are fun. And definitely post some. I would love to go to Belize (if only through you).

Yeah, I can definitely hook up friends and fellow Chewers who are interested in going to Belize. Dad still has his 2 Bedroom condo right on the beach on Ambergris Caye (which is the small island that they filmed the first "Temptation Island" on). I can usually get friends set up there for about a week for free. They need only pay for the airfare and incidentals. Totally laid back place. Hardly any cars. Most people drive electric golf carts around and no one wears shoes ever. And some of the most amazing snorkling around. Wanna swim with friendly sharks (yes, SHARKS)... they have that too. And you can even take a day tour by boat to the mainland to view Mayan ruins and such. Great place.

Sorry to hear about your ankle. Hope it gets better fast.

I think Touching the Void took place in the Andes, which is near Argentina (I think).

Those pics are simply amazing Diva! Thanks for posting them! Was this a vacation trip? If so, (if you don't mind me asking) what kind of deals were you able to get (flight, etc.)?

That post office pic had me smiling.

It was pretty surreal. I mean, we were walking through clouds. I kept trying to touch them as if they had any substance.

We had a friend who had been living in Ecuador for several months, so abunch of us flew out to visit her and tour Peru at teh same time. We spent about a month looking for deals on-line. Everyone had a website to keep checking everyday. We settled on expedia.com and got round trip tickets to Lima for around $540. Once in Peru, everything is so cheap. One American dollar is about 3.4 soles (their currency). A four course meal (appetizer, soup, entree, drink, dessert) would cost about 10 soles or roughly $3. It was insane. The food was delicious too. Fresh trout, alpaca meat, chicken, etc. it was all good.

The post office pic is one of my faves.

A buddy of mine did a similar trip to yours last year, and he loved it. Looks like a great time.

Did you climb the Huyna Piccu? It's in the background in that picture. Has an awesome view.

No. I literally couldn't hike anymore. As soon as the guide said it was another 500 or so steep steps up another mountain, I was like "no way"!

Amazing pics! I would love to go there someday.

Can you imagine if we had the money to pull off a CHUD Peru or CHUD Belize? That would be amazing.

We need to make that happen. Carl says he has a condo in Belize. All we need to do is get there!

But be honest, did you giggle just a little when saying Lake Titicaca? I have that problem.

I did, and do, giggle everytime. In fact, I knew nothing of the town prior to my trip other than I HAD to go there specifically so I could tell everyone that I had.
