What do you like best about CHUD?

Thread Starter
There's been so much vitriol and unabashed negativity on the message board lately I thought I would try and focus on something POSITIVE. What do you like best about CHUD?

Personally, what I think is best about CHUD is the variety of different film tastes that this site attracts. Sure, you could say we're all fan-boys (i.e. we enjoy nerdy shit) but everyone here had their own subtly different tastes, and because of this my own film horizons have expanded.

A few years ago I was what you would consider a traditional College-Guy in terms of the movies I liked. Fight Club was the best film ever despite the fact that I didn't understand it's real messages at all.

Today, my interests are all over the map, and into new territories I never would have ventured in before, such as horror movies (thanks a bunch to the CC guys) and classic old movies. I'd never actually BENEFITTED from participating on a messageboard before I started posting on CHUD, so that says something.

Let's all be friends, people! Friendly discussion can only benefit us, it can't hurt us.

It's a toss-up between conspicuous do-gooding and cynical, mean-spirited commentary.

it's all good until it turns into 4 pages of worthless pictures.

chud kicks ass. great gamers & smart posters is why I'm here.

The nonbelligerent atmosphere.

Nothing. At least concrete. I've been asking myself lately why I come here...why I put up with all the inane, stupid shit I see on here day after day.

The answer is easy. Film. I like to discuss film. Whether classic, entertaining, or entertaining stupid...it's what I like. And it's what has kept me coming here up to this point.

But that has changed. Not that the boards have changed, but that my tolerance for them has. I can't take the endless parade of egos, pandering, and mean-spirtedness that I once could.

That I once was a gleeful participant in. I'll admit I have an ego, that I think I'm cooler, faster, better than a lot of people. That the temporary infamy I got on here in the long, long ago felt good. That I enjoyed the praise.

Not anymore.

When this place was good...for me at least...it was when guys like Hot Animal Machine or Andre Dellamorte would jump on a box and preach about the joys of Beat Takashi flicks or why The Matrix sucked and why. I enjoyed reading them and eventually talking to them because they were interesting in ways my friends in 'The Real World' weren't. Or maybe they were better learned, better educated in the films I wanted to talk about.

I didn't have to explain who Joey Wang was. Only why I liked her more than Michelle Yeoh.

See when my friends and I get together...we talk about real things. Things that matter in the real world, not the movies that we love so much although there is a part of that too.

I came on here to talk movies. Then I came back because I enjoyed talking to those people here.

But it wasn't real. None of this is. And I see that now.

I grew up. And that's why people leave, for the most part. They also leave when they grow tired of the political bullshit that happens around here.

You know why Devin doesn't get banned? Or when he does why he comes back?

Cause he works for the main site. Because he's a fairly talented guy when he's injecting his own words into another site's news stories. He's good at interviewing people Nunziata can't get to in New York.

And as long as he does that for CHUD main...he'll be on here too. Like it or not, offically or not...that's why he gets away with whatever shit you people think he does.

Guys like Bunny Dracula...does contribute anything of worth in Nunziata's eyes. Neither do I, or you for that matter. But as long as we can 'tow the line' we're welcomed to stay at his place. As long as we play 'Good Little Chewers' we can come and talk about whatever we want to whom ever we want.

And there's nothing wrong with that. It is his place, after all.

The problem is that like any good party...the crashers eventually convince other people to leave. And when all the interesting people are gone, the keg is tapped...you're party sucks and the mime shows up to taunt you about it.

The people with sense remember they have work the next morning and go home to bed.

What you new kids fail to understand...and this is a blanket statement for the younger generation, not just Chewers under a post count of 5000...is that there is a sense of history to everything. The world didn't begin and it doesn't end with you.

CHUD existed long before Werbal Kint. There were guys like chenzzo, Lowshot, Eddie 5...hell even Will who added a lot of value to things for those who were here then. And like friends from childhood who move away suddenly in the night...we occasionally miss them.

Where they here before anyone? No. Where they the best there ever was? No. But they were here at the time when we were. When things were fresh and new.

That's why long time posters get nostalgic. We miss those guys. Especially during intermissions from The Werbal, Onik, and Gruber Show. Doesn't make them better...only missed to those who remember them.

And what Nunziata needs to realize is that people will eventually get tired and go away. It happens. But the solution isn't to toss out the baby with the bathwater. Don't piss everyone who's still around by standing at the door in your bathrobe yelling...

'WAIT! THERE'S A BOTTLE OF MY OLD FAMILY VINTAGE IN THE BACK ROOM! LET'S OPEN IT! COME BACK!'

Sure, some will come back. Those that were just playin' possum, hard to get. Everyone else will be heading off to where ever has the most full keg.

Guys like Dellamorte and Kirby...they're over at Devin's site where there's port and cigars.

CHUD isn't why we're here. Nor is Nick Nunziata. Everyone is here because - for the moment - this is the best place to discuss movies on the web. Not CHUD itself...but the CHUD Message Boards.

And the reason is because of the people who come here. Nothing else.

Piss off your guests and they take the party elsewhere. And it'll take more than 'Well...FUCK YOU TOO!' to bring them back.

Beer nuts and Nudie Mags help.

But for other who have grown tired of talking movies...you're time is up. It's time to pack it in.

'It took a moment...the moment could not be found...'

That's precisely why I'm here.

For all the childish bullshit going on (which I've admittedly been a part of at times, such is life), there is always stimulating discussion to be found. Personally, if I can read just ONE really good, eloquent, though-provoking post about a film on this board then my day is therefore enhanced in a way it wouldn't have been without this board. I don't mind sifting through some garbage to find that one gem and I can ALWAYS find a gem. Sometimes you find several.

Because of the opportunity this board provides as far as really gauging the personality of its writers, I find myself giving a lot more credence to people like Micah, Devin, Andre, or Slater when it comes to film criticism. It's virtual character development. I like the fact that we can directly interact with people like this, people that give a shit and can really TALK about film. I can listen to Slater wax poetic about the virtues of the Muppet films and then massacre his face in Crimson Skies later that night. I love that. I haven't seen that sense of community anywhere else on the web, so I set up shop here.

I just saw Midnight Cowboy today for the first time, and after coming back I went to the Films in Release section and sure enough, there's a thread on it which features a really nice post from Muncie Girl, among others. It enhanced my appreciation for the film. THAT is why I dig CHUD.

Addendum: In regards to the rather ugly surge in bitching and bellyaching about the apparent lack of quality on the boards right now -- for the people that think it sucks, are you part of the problem or the solution? If you don't see any good discussion going on, then MAKE SOME. If an intelligent person on this board starts an intelligent thread regarding the intelligent aspects of an intelligent film, then there's no way in hell that no good discussion will arise from it. None. Make it happen.

I come here for the insane humor Nick unleashes, there's some things I wanna know though...

1) Where did the Hollow Man gag start from? [I know it's from Kevin Bacons flick but more on when?]

2) Where'd Nick get " _______? I ain't got time for that shit!" for his caps

3) How long it takes for him to write those Spam responses
[They need you like they need an autographed Adam West pumpkin]

One of the biggest reasons are the captions, the iron Giant one was great

"Say, would you like to bash gophers for jesus?"

that and the crazy names he comes up with [Sticky McSticks and his sidekick RESIDUDE crack me up thinking about it]

Through all of the bullshit and wasted threads, a lot of the Chewers have participated in thought provoking threads about an older film and a thought provoking director.

For a while I wasn't sure if threads like those two could hold up without being hijacked.

Ever since I got married, I lost contact with most (probably all) of my moviegoing friends. My wife is not nearly the connesuier of film as I am. Bummer.

Here, I find people who are interesting and have a lot to say about film. I enjoy being part of this film-loving community.

I love the way my penis stays even harder when I rub the head of it with the palm of my hand.

I love Creature-Corner, and always will. The people there are great people.

and most of all

I love the way Jesse Ventura spits tobacco in Predator without getting any of it in his chin dimple.

How the hell does he do that?

I think I'd close the site down if Django actually ever liked it. Here's hoping mom never cancels the phone line in his bedroom.

1. I used to use it all the time in conversation, just basically imagining an invisible man was somewhere. The CHUD.com version started with the FOTR DVD review.

2. It's basically an easy out joke for me. If something really outrageous is happening to someone in a screen grab, that's a fun way to go with the joke.

3. Sometimes too damn long, sometimes not long enough.

Thanks for the comments. It seems to be easier to dismiss stuff like that than enjoy it these days.

The first part's true. Second part's a lie. Unless the film's about Michael Moore.

I'm new here, been posting for about 6 months. I can tell you this much, without an active board like this with all these different people i'd lose my mind. I find it hard to talk to my friends anymore, they're just not in the know about all the stuff i like.
i guess those guys are drinking buddies and the people here i can talk to about stuff that interests me.

Sure if you have a single minded interest someone could go to that board. Like star wars, i'm a fan but those people at the official site or force.net boards don't know how deep they're in. Thats not bad though, if it keeps them going, hell this place keeps me goin. All i'm saying is that these boards have it all. I'll lurk at those other places but here i'll actually have good dialogue with interesting people and have fights with dickheads.

great place and a proud member
i'd tell others but i don't want them to ruin this place for me. I've never met anyone from these boards but thats part of the charm i think.

The irony is I found this place thro SP, who I found through AICN when I got tired of their message boards, I stayed at SP out of some twisted sense of loyalty which ended when I realised all I want to do is talk about movies. I don’t care about the rest of the stuff (who hates who etc and/or even if people hate me) I just want to discusses films and broaden my horizons when it comes to them

Believe it or not but is true.

Like many have said before me: I came for the movie news and stayed for the Chewers.
I came for the freak, and stayed for the food.

Most of my regular friends aren't as big of a movie fanatic as I am. CHUD has a great community of knowledgable film lovers that 'get it.'

Everyone except Nick. Jeez, who does he think he is?

(edited to clarify good-willed sarcasm.)
What do you like best about CHUD?

Well the Cannibalistic Humanoid Underground Dwellers of course.

And I stayed because I no longer have any legs.
What I like best about CHUD is how professional the site is; it puts AICN to shame and the reviews and news are both tongue-in-cheek and well-written, something of which I've found hard for other movie sites to accomplish. The guys here do a great job.

The forum is fun and I like the people, so that's why I keep coming back.
I come here because it is the only place I've found that has a large amount of people who appreciate film. There is such a huge group of witty, funny, intelligent people here that I can talk to about things I'm to embarassed to bring up around my non-film fanatical friends. (Things like that camera angle that got you excited or how much of what we see is actually just the soundtrack or directors personal lives.)

I'm not a very big part of this board but I enjoy being here. I've learned so much from lurking around here and it feels almost like I've grown up on CHUD.
