Horror comics thread

Hey all.

I just recently got back into comics and am looking for a few suggestions. I used to work at a comics shop and devoured them. Used to get all the Marvel stuff in the mail when I was a kid, then in High School started on Moore and then Vietch's Swamp Thing, Morrison's Animal Man and Doom Patrol, Sandman, Hellblazer (pretty much just the Delano ones) and a whole bunch of smaller press stuff, but for about 10 or so years now, nothing.

So I've gotten a sub box again and reading some stuff, but the shop I go to doesn't carry some stuff unless it's ordered. Like I have them get Fango for me, and they're gonna get the TPB and new issues from now on of Walking Dead (based on recomedations here) but I need some more suggestions. In the Remains thread someone mentioned the Silent Hill comic was pretty cool....that's something I had no idea was out cause they don't carry it, etc. So far I'm picking up Spookshow International, Aleister Arcane, Remains, Swamp Thing, Walking Dead and may check out Silent Hill.

Any other horror comics worth checking out? Or coming out soon? If this thread takes off, any chance of it being stuck with the Horror games thread? I just feel so much more out of touch with comics compared to how I used to be, so any new info would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I've been a stout supporter of Route 666 since that series' start, it's on issue 22 or 23 now and has taken a strange turn. Not sure if I like it or not, I'll have to wait until the next issue to make that call, apparently it wraps up one major story arc and shifts gears after that.

Missed the Swamp Thing #3, but I finally got to read Remains #1 last night. Liked it, but it left me with the same feeling after I read Niles' Freaks of the Heartland...there should've been just a little bit more to knock me on my ass. Kieron Dwyer's art is appropriately icky though Love it.

Yeah, I'm really hoping Remains #2 kicks it into a higher gear and is a little more involving.

I wa surprised how much I enjoyed the Swamp Thing's I picked up. I have no idea why they started back with #1, but I picked up 2-4 and am really digging it. I had stopped way back when after Vietch quit after the whole Jesus thing and Nancy Collins took over and trashed it.

I am noticing that all the important past events mentioned by Abby, Constantine, Alec, Tefe, Sargon, etc are all stuff that happened way back when during Moore's writing. I guess not that much good happened in the comic while I wasn't reading for 10 years.

I'll have to check out Route 666.
I never could get into Route 666; can't really explain why, it just didn't click with me. I very much enjoyed Remains and especially appreciated the wicked sense of humor it has about itself -- I look at it as kind of the anti-Walking Dead, which I'm a huge fan of, too, but let's be honest, it does at times take itself much too heavy-handedly serious. Freaks of the Heartland did start terribly slow, but with issue 3 it's now kicked itself up several notches and has turned into something special I believe. Alastair Arcane is fantastic; beautiful artwork and the writing shows a deep love for the horror and science fiction genre. Eagerly awaiting the debut of Niles and Zombie's The Nail.
I'm digging on the latest Cal McDonald bit - "Last Train to Deadsville" myself. I love Templesmith, but the person drawing this round is pretty fucking fun. I always like the comedy horror comics like "The Goon" and can't wait for the "Goon/Hellboy" crossover this summer. I abandoned "Freaks of the Heartland," so I guess I'd better go pick it up. Looking forward to see what's happening with "Back to Barrow" as it's being set-up pretty well. Also looking forward to "The Nail," but also "Hyde."
I was able to get through 30 Days, and the first McDonald comic, but after that I just lost track of Niles' career. He's just doing too much for me to be able to keep up on it, though I would love to be able to read it all.

Does this kill my street cred?
Gah! The Goon! Holy shit does that book crack me up...its mingling of werewolves, zombies, robots, spiders with derby hats, booze, and jokes about gypsies makes the series an absolute must read.

Folks, I'm tellin' ya. The Goon. Read it. I almost wrote in to Erik Powell thanking him for that one splash page, in a recent issue, that featured this giant fuckin' werewolf and robot fighting a horde of zombies. Hell, it brought me to tears.

If I had the dough I'd love to pick up Rob Bowen's Goon bust that's coming out.
Hells, I am so outta the loop on this stuff, sadly.

Think I'll sell a kidney...
Walking Dead is pretty cool I'm sure you'll enjoy it. Comics are a pain in the ass to keep up with these days. Luckily I go to a little known comic shop in a basically deserted side street that always has every issue of any given series no matter how late I get to it.
I'm going to give Remains another shot with issue number two but I thought issue #1 was absolute shit. I wasn't too crazy about the 30 Days of Night series, either, but I haven't checked out any of the Cal McDonald comics (although I love the graphic novels).

I'm struggling to maintain interest in the Silent Hill series out by IDW. I'm an absolute Silent Hill nut so I feel like I should own all of the comics but the story just isn't very good. Showed promise but went into the crapper during issue #3. Too bad, too, cause the artwork fits the SH mood perfect. Oh well.

I'll be picking up the Walking Dead TPB very soon.

Well, I think I'll still check out an issue or too of Silent Hill to see how it is. And I'll have to check out the Goon.

I've never read any of the Cal MacDonald stuff. Is it really that good? The idea never seemed all that fresh or new to me, and since there's been a few out I kinda feel like I've missed the boat. Is it something where I could pick up the new comic and figure out what's going on? I think someone said Kelley Jones--whose work I love (his Deadman comics rock)--is doing the new story?

The only Steve Niles stuff I've read is Aleister Arcane (lovin it) and Remains (giving it another issue or two.)

What's people's fave horror comics? For me, it's Alan Moore's Swamp Thing run, esp the American Gothis storyline.
I'd highly recommend the Cal McDonald graphic novels. Start with Savage Membrane - a fun, fast-paced, and gritty ride to say the least.

My fave horror comic ever would have to be Clive Barker's Night of the Living Dead: London. I still have those issues and the artwork is absolutley unreal. The same artist handled the Night of the Living Dead adaption as well and I was very pleased with that.

I saw the covers for these in the Tomart horror collectibles price guide and had no idea Clive Barker write the NOTLD: London. Guess I didn't look close enough at the cover. I'd love to read Barker's take on Romero's world.
My favorite would be Spawn but then that's the only horror comic I've ever read until 30 Days of Night came along. 30 Days has resparked an interest in comics for me for now. Til I get tired of trying to keep up with them.

Anyone pick up The Nail today by Rob Zombie and Steve Niles? I thought it was pretty cool, enjoyed it alot. I thought it was definately a good set up and can't wait for the next issue. I was kinda surprised how instantly likeable the Nail and his family were. It made the end of issue #1 all the more shocking, even though it's just the first issue.

Also picked up a comic called Grumpy Old Monsters which I was kinda thinking might turn out to be lame, but I really liked it. Sorta Bubba-ho-Tep-ish....or at least it's what I thought of. But it's got Dracula, the Wolfman, the Mummy, the Gillman, Frankenstien's monster all in an old folks home for monsters and references a whole bunch of old flicks. And little Tiffany Frankenstein visits and there's the Van Helsing Corporation...I thought it was a lot of fun. Nothing earth shattering, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Also got the 1st two issues of Last Train to Deadsville. Haven't read em yet, but at least I'll get a taste of what this whole Cal MacDonald things about.
The Nail #1 was pretty good. I too liked the characters and the illustrations. Cool soundtrack.

Remains #2 was good also and has me looking forward to the third issue.
Yeah, I picked up "Remains" #2 and "The Nail" #1 yesterday as well. Interested to see where "Remains" is going, certainly, but No Good Can Come from what's going on in "The Nail." Could be an interesting book.

The real question is, what is Steve Niles going to do with all the money we're funnelling into his life? Solid gold house or rocket car?
Thread Starter
Or Solid Gold Rocket Car?

Remains #2 came out? Well then why the hell wasn't it in my subscription box?!? Damn, time for another trip to the comic shop.
I'm going to run over to my local shop yet again and see if he can't dig up all of the Plissken chronicles for me.

Niles is going to be a filthy rich man for sure but I love his story.

EDIT

I think anytime anyone grabs a new edition of whatever it is they're reading they should post it here ASAP. That would help me keep track of this stuff better. I can't do it alone!

This thread was a good idea Doc.

So you think The Nail is doomed SJR? I thought it was going to be different than it is but I still liked it alot.
Shit when did The Nail come out? I can't believe I forgot about it.

And come on, Hellblazer kicks ass, the recent Staring At The Wall arc was amazing and genuinely freaky. Why has no one mentioned this?
I read everything horror comic-related. Call me Captain of the Dork Dept, Special Forces.

The Walking Dead is my current favourite.

Didn't a new storyline start in Hellblazer recently? I was tempted to pick that up. I started with the beginning and loved Delano's HB and stopped reading somewhere after Ennis' Dangerous Habits. Ennis just wasn't doing it for me.

But now that I'm back reading comics again, I've been tempted to see how the book is. I was very pleasantly surprised that the Swamp Things I picked up were cool.

Honestly, "The Nail" is pretty different than I thought it would be, too. After "House of 1,000 Corpses," I expected the Nail to be all Otis-ed out or something, but he fits in more with Niles' fringe-type heroes (horror hosts, Reno blackjack dealer, P.I., wrassler, etc.). I don't think The Nail is doomed, but the baddies in the series are pretty fucked up thus far.

I’m dreading my next visit to the comic store. I order everything by Niles and I haven’t been there for about a month. I was not impressed with 'Freaks of the Heartland' or 'Wake the Dead', but the rest have been decent to great. I'm really enjoying 'Aleistar Arcane' and all of the Cal McDonald comics. I’m interested to see what’s up with 'The Nail' and 'Remains', so I better pick them all up before the bill gets bigger. Has anyone else been picking up 'By Bizarre Hands' by Joe R. Lansdale? I thought the first two issues were pretty good.
I see more Zombie than Niles, if anything, in The Nail. The attitude, the dialogue. Pure Zombie. Re-reading Remains #2, myself and honestly? I was really wondering why the fuck Niles was treading into familiar territory that we had already seen in prior zombie stories...that is, however, until I got to the very last few pages. Interesting. I'm groovin' on the energy between the two leads. It's just rotten but fun to watch. I don't know if it's just me, either, but I think Dwyer's art looks like early Disney animation...like the conceptual art for the human characters from their early, early features. I can't say the whole book is like this. Just some of the panels with Tori.

Picked up The Walking Dead TPB today so I could fill in some blanks seeing as I didn't have issue two and four. Oh, and those who were eager to see my chat with Robert Kirkman will have to wait. Sorry. I thought I'd have it done before I went away on my trip. Didn't want to rush it. It'll be posted soon!
I agree. At least the first issue of The Nail felt to me more like a Rob Zombie story than anything. Niles may be the one writing the actual words, but the story and vibe of the whole thing is much more Zombie in tone. Right now I think the best horror series going is Last Train to Deadsville. That's just good shit.
I just picked up part one of Last Train to Deadsville purely because of the love shown for Call MacDonald on this board. It was pretty damn good and now I need to read everything else C MacD related. Can anyone tell me what I've missed and how many issues of Last Train have been released so far.

Don't look at me like that.
Criminal Macabre is Cal Macdonald isn't it?

Yes it is, Floyd. I think that was the first one.

I just read the 1st 2 issues of Deadsville and I loved it. At first, I was a bit worried it would be a lot of that pseudo-hardboiled narration and a little too many wise cracks, but I was wrong, I liked them alot. I'll definately be checking out some of the earlier Cal MacDonald stuff.

And man oh man do I love me some Kelly Jones art.
Ish 2 of Deadsville is pretty damn funny and The Nail was really good. There's an overall feeling of dread as soon as the bikers make contact with The Nail and his family. Looking forward to some brutal revenge in future books.
I love alot of the work www.avatarpress.com is doing.

Both the Alan Moore created titles NIGHTJAR and YUGGOTH CULTURES have been outstanding thus far. Waiting to start THE COURTYARD. Anyone read it yet?

Alot of the badass women titles are fun too. Can't wait to see what Pulido's (Evil Ernie, Lady Death) has in store. UNHOLY looks like it's gonna be pretty over the top.

Also, would like to recommend SNOWMAN for anyone that hasn't read it yet
post #35 of 172
Oh, good - an Avatar booster. Is Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegoski's "The Sisterhood" still going to come out through Avatar this fall?
I'm looking forward to THE SISTERHOOD. I haven't heard a set date though. Hopefully get a chance to ask Golden at DRAGONCON. Anyone here planning to attend?
FINALLY - "The Goon" #7!!!

GOON: Oh yeah? When I come across somethin' like this I just try ta punch it in the head -- what do you do?

HELLBOY: Pretty much the same thing. I...GAH!

Okay, so it makes you wish it was a 3 or 4-parter, but better than nothing I say. The full-page panel where Hellboy sees the zombie priest is something I'd want a poster of.

Also, knew there was a reason to stick with "30 Days of Night: Return to Barrow." Issue #4 hit today and it's a doozy!

"Jesus Christ! They're ARMED!!!"

I picked up that Goon today as well. Haven't had a chance to read it yet, but I've heard awesome things so I'm looking forward to it (plus, may be new to Goon, but love Hellboy.)

I'll finally be getting my Remains 2 next week (my store only got 1 copy last week) and I picked up the last three issues of Hellblazer. I stopped that comic a looong time ago, but liked the new Swamp Thing so much I figured I'd give it a shot and see if it was good nowadays.

I also picked up #1 of The Witching and well, it kinda sucked.

Did anybody else get that Grumpy Old Monsters last week? I'm telling, while nothing earth shattering, I did really love hit. It hit me in just the right spot (fill in rude comments now)
Picked up The Goon and The Witching too. Marvel's Witches sucked so I thought I'd see how well DC dabbled in witchery.

Anyone pick up the new Previews? Holy shit there's some good stuff in there: You get a good look at NECA's Myers/Loomis action figure set too.

So I liked the Goon #7 that I picked up. Can someone give me a bit of background about what the character and series is all about? I'm kinda assuming a crossover issue with Hellboy may not be the best way to judge what the stories, etc are all about. Pretty cool though.
I know I am way behind but has the comic of Night of the Living Dead: Barbara's Journal or Diary, or somewhere in that area. has that came out yet? How about the Dawn of the Dead comic.

Hmm...explaining the Goon isn't easy, really, but it's a comedy-horror comic that kind of exists in a surreal EC-type universe, but with half the horror and twice the jokes. The Goon spent his little kid years with his mom in the circus, but then killed a notorious gangster who killed his mom (if I'm getting any of this wrong, correct me fellas - I haven't read that origin issue in awhile) and took both his hat and his "list." He ended up going around like a little enforcer collecting money for the gangster that no one knew was dead. Eventually, he grew up and just kind of knocks around like a brutish longshoreman with a sense of monster-smashing right and wrong - but with plenty of irony and sarcastic humor. It's truly one of the funniest books around and has a great, great sense of humor as The Goon fights everything from skunkapes to a sea monster who uses him to "pleasure" herself.

Re: Horror comics thread

Dawn of the Dead comic is on #3. I stopped after #2 though because all it is, is an adaption of the movie.
thecallahan is right. I bought Issue 1 of Dawn of The Dead and stopped after that, no offense to Steve Niles but the adaptation was pretty much word for word. I just watched the DVD instead.
Thanks for the heads up. What about the Night of the Living Dead comic, it had a subtitle of "Barbara's Diary" or something like that. Is that out?
All right, I let this thread go on long enough without a shameless plug, but fuck it, here it comes.

I'm a an old school fan of horror, grew up on it, love it, live it, breath it. My comic company, Boneyard Press, has had it's fair share of hits and misses threw out the years, but right now I think we've got some real raw slices of meat for you to check out, but you won't find it lying around on the shelves. You're gonna have to special order it.

FLOWERS ON THE RAZORWIRE- an erotic horror anthology for the damned. We're shipping the revival of my old title to stores this week in a dual format, as a movie series and as a comic book series. Issue one is as hardcore as it get's with a nasty baby farm story set in Juarez Mexico. I'll be sending a bunch of free screener copies to Ryan and Johnny at the end of the week but you'll have to pay hard earned cash for yours.

PSYCHO HUNTER- This is one sick fucked up book about an ancient legend come to life to hunt a demon filled earth after hell has taken over our plane of reality and there is but one cancerous sore of a city left on Earth. The first couple of issues of this book has really, really, rough artwork, but the last 2 issues are pretty kick ass. #4 has a great cover by Frank Forte.

SEX CRIMES- while not a comic book, it is one sick book. If you don't believe me, peep the creature corner archives for the bleeding review they gave the book. You can pick up a copy through Amazon or maybe even the Evilshop.

BOOK OF LEGION- if you like your horror EERIE and Creepy style, this is your book written by a pack of wild satan worshipers I party with sometimes, one being the lead singer from The Electric Hellfire Club, Thom Thorn. First issue is out and the next one will be out in August.

I'd send you to my website, www.boneyardpress.com for more info, but I'm changing servers and it's not up yet. So go check out Cry For Dawn orginal creator Joseph M. Monks new house of pain at www.chantingmonks.com if not for his own sick stuff, then for all the cool shit he's doing with Bernie Wrightson like the Gardens of the Dead portfolio series or Joe's revived magazine of death and slow torture AGONY IN BLACK.

But at this point, I highly, highly recomend FLOWERS ON THE RAZORWIRE on DVD or VHS with a special mini-comic. Cool Stuff.

Me, I'm that loud mouth bastard, Hart D. Fisher- author of the JEFFREY DAHMER: AN UNAUTHORIZED BIOGRAPHY OF A SERIAL KILLER, one time editor for Glen Danzig's company VEROTIK, and I'm working on a cool mini-series LADY DRACULA set in pre written history China for Dead Dog Entertainment.

Shameless plug is over now. You can uncork yer poopers.

Nope, not out yet. The first issue's due next month or in August.
what, no love for Black Hole by Charles Burns? or any of Junji Ito's stuff?
Can't believe no one's recommended it yet but, GET The Walking Dead.

The comic is my second favorite one out there right now. It reads like an extended /good/ zombie movie. The only drawback is that it only comes out once a month instead of every week. You can get the first TPB for about 10 bucks and it has the first six issues in it. Issues 7 and 8 are both out and 9 should be out in a week or two.

Also, don't waste your money on the book, The Remains. It has 2 issues out and is crap. Art's crap, stories a knockoff of the book, The Rising (except for how the zombies came to be) and it's 4 freaking dollars for about 10 pages of story.
