Let's not forget the two massive series "Clive Barker's Hellraiser" and "Clive Barker's Nightbreed". Nightbreed ran for 25 issues plus "Jihad", the 2 part crossover with Hellraiser.

A complete list of Hellraiser comics can be found here: http://www.cenobite.com/encyc/index.htm

And now new, original fan Hellraiser comics can be found free, online at: http://www.consteast.com/hrcomic/main.htm

So far there are only two short comics but more are in development.

Other Clive Barker comics involve his line of various suprheroes (including Saitn Sinner) the Tapping the Vein series and adaptations of both Rawhead Rex and Weaveworld.

I picked up the first two NotLD: Barbera's Zombie Chronicles books. They're kind of weird, kind of disappointing. They took the girl from NotLD, gave her Sarah Conner's attitude and Pamela Anderson's body. An out-of-nowhere almost boobie flash for no reason as well as the explanation for the zombie apocalypse hinted at on the last page of the second issue (spoiler, highlight the inviso-text) aliens?!? left me kind of disappointedly scratching my head. Don't know if I'll pick up the third one at 5 bucks a pop.

Oh well, next up: The Walking Dead. I picked up both trades and the remaining single issues up to #15 based soley on recommendations here. I hope it was worth it (total cost, about $30, or about the same as six damn books from the aforementioned NotLD series).

Oh God yes. Walking Dead is not just a great horror or Genre comic. It is one of the best comics Period.

I wish i could discover it all over again.

A couple books have peaked my interest.

I read the first TPB and the beginning of the second. Man, what a great story. I can't wait until I can get enough time to finish the rest of the issues I have. And there's some awesome artwork there. The Walking Dead wipes its ass with Barbara's Zombie Chronicles. It's a great comparison. The NOTLD licensed comic is slick and colored, but devoid of any of the things that made NOTLD great. The Walking Dead is a little bit less "produced", a bit "cheaper" if you will (and definately the lower priced of the two), being in black and white, and it's closer to NOTLD and the George Romero stories. I could cut the irony with a knife.

I apologize if this was covered in another thread.

Has anyone here read ZOMBIE KING #0? I believe it was released last month?

Unbelievable.

I'll always think of that whenever cows are brought up in conversation.

Not sure that's a good thing.

-DD

P.S. Bovine ballyhoo aside, it was a fun zombie story. Frank Cho's art is beautiful. He's clearly a sick fuck, and that's the way I like my artists!

I'm getting ready to launch a new weekly / monthly segment on The Corner for Horror Comics. Looking to see what the interest level is.

I'll be doing a review of the first 4 issues of F. Paul Wilson's THE KEEP to kick things off.

Thoughts?
Hi Greg, you should definately run that! Horror comics don't get that much coverage online (anyone feel free to correct me) it's mostly superhero stuff that gets covered, even in the small press circles.
Even if you could cover small press and independent releases that'd be awesome!

Just thought I'd mention Olympus by Geoff Johns - Deep Rising meets Clash of the Titans. Shallow, but fun.

Just finished Warren Ellis' Black Gas - pretty solid zombie story. A young couple returns to the fella's hometown on an island off the mainland. It seems there was an unexplained disappearance of a large Indian tribe there a couple of hundred years ago. Straightforward, but fun, and there's a second 3-issue arc coming out this fall.

I agree w/ all who have suggested "Walking Dead". The author makes no bones about the fact that horror is secondary to the development of the characters and the continuation of the usual zombie movie story line (He's attempting to answer the nagging question "OK, THEN what happened?" we all ask after Peter fights his way back on to the helicopter and takes off w/ Flygirl). But the horror is there just enough to remind us why all these people are in this situation; the zombies, remember? Definitely a good read.

I also liked "Thirty Days of Night". The sequels are a little weaker than the original, but it's a really good vampire story.

I found a hardcover one shot published by Vertigo called 'Lovecraft" that posits the question: "What if all that crazy stuff HP Lovecraft wrote about were true, and he was the only one who knew it?" Great painted artwork (I'm a sucker for painted artwork), and a really interesting plot. The intro by John Carpenter is also very cool, a well-deserved homage to ol' HP.

If you don't mind delving into the past a bit, I was always a big fan of the old DC property "House of Mystery". I recently saw (but did not buy, a situation I will have to rectify) a monstrous, 500 page trade compiling a lot of the old stories from this title. I plan on buying it unread. IMO, you can;t go wrong here.

And I'm sure I'm not alone when I say "Creepy" and "Eerie", the old Warren publishing B&W books RULE! At last year's NY Comicon, I decided, then and there, when ng to make it my mission in life to score copies of all the Creepy's ever published. Especially in the period starting around issue 80 or so, published in the 1970's, the art was fantastic, even for B&W. Gory and sexy (dig those supa groovy 70's chicks almost wearing scant articles of clothing - Yowza!) at the same time. The writing often came off like something a couple stoners would throw together after a particularly good bone had been burned, and was sometimes choppy and disjointed, but that wasn't always the case, as some stories were really well written, and IMO doesn't take away from the fun. All but the oldest or rarest of these are fairly cheap, and I plan on picking up a boatload at the next Con in February.

That's my 2 cents.

We need some more horror comics out there - the genre is way too limited. I read the 30 Days stuff, and lately, its lost its way

I'll throw one in I think is pretty good: Virulents. Pretty dark stuff, think Gunga Din meets Dagon set in present day Afghanistan. Check out the link below:

I'll suggest people pass on Warren Ellis' Black Gas. It's a bit of a disappointment; the thing seemed derivative of a popular zombie flick, and pretty cliched.
I suggest Marvel Zombies if you like humor mixed with your horror. And Army of Darkness is still continuing in all sorts of random mini series. The Trade Paper backs are hard to find though. (At book stores)

Finally snagged a copy of Damned, a supernatural crime story with a posthumous hero...pretty solid read from Oni I read about on RackRaids.

I found a preview on the Oni website before I picked it up: http://www.onipress.com/preview.php?...6&pid=144&pg=1
