Both the books and the film "Spiral" are top notch.

Anyone read "The Gift" yet? It's getting alot of run being picked up by Image an all. I'm thinking about trying to find 1-6 to see what the buzz is about.

Talking about something that will date me quite heavily. I still think the EC comics, Tales from the Crypt, Vault of Horror, and Haunt of Fear are the best ever. I do like Nile's work. I was lucky enough to happen upon him at the Book Expo America last year in L.A. and got a signed copy of 30 Days of Night. He singlehandedly reestablished the relevancy of vampires in my mind, but while talking about Horror Comics, the EC stuff broke the new wood, was brave in its' attempts and influenced most of the current masters of horror. I also like the SANDMAN stuff and THE PREACHER series.

Hey, man, thanks for posting. Yeah, I really dug the first issue alot. And I agree with some of those above that said, to me, it seemed more Zombie than Niles. But being more of either is a good thing. Glad to hear it's gonna get crazy. It's got some good solid characters to start off with.

Well Free Comic Book Day is over. Horror related freebies came from AVATAR, which covers the upcoming Pulido's books. Outside of the three anti-hero chick titles, KILLER GNOMES (which is based based on his short film) looks like some good exploitation fun.

NBM SAMPLER - Includes a story called BONEYARD by Richard Moore where a guy inherites a cemetery filled with monsters, that comes with it's share of problems, including the I.R.S. Don't know if it's any good, but this is why I love Free Comic Book Day. Probably would've never seen this Indie.

ARCANA STUDIO - Again some new stuff. Looks like more Dark Fantasty characters, with the exception of THE ANT.

I found issue #5 of THE GIFT. The concept is very TWILIGHT ZONish. As the Ancient One gives a gift, that has a monkey paw effect, on those he chooses. Suppossedly, there's a grand scheme underlying the Ancient One's motives, and as the book goes along it slowly becomes unveiled. This series has alot of promise. Looking forward to #7, when it goes over to IMAGE and becomes more accessible.

Finished SILENT HILL #5. The overall story arc of Lauryn was shite, they're setting a very surreal tone with this book that leaves alot to the imagination. The almost expressionistic artwork is something to behold. Still, many questions to be answered in this series though. Hope it all comes together. Still has me intrigued!

Grabbed THE NAIL from the recommendations here.

There's no debating the quality of the EC stuff. Some of the best writing and art in the history of comics is between the pages of the EC Comics line of horror and suspense and even war comics. Also worthy of mention are the great Creepy and Eerie and Vampirella magazines from the '70s. Probably the best horror comic published by either Marvel or DC has got to be Marvel's The Tomb of Dracula. Maybe the best anit-hero comic ever made as well. Marv Wolfman's stories and especially Gene Colon's gothic drawings were amazing stuff during the resurrection of the horror comic book.
Speaking of Marvel's The Tomb of Dracula, Marvel will be bringing it back in October. Bruce Jones will be the writer and it of course Blade will be in it.

Great artwork Nat. The first issue was very promising. Can't wait to see what you guys come up with in the future. Any plans for you guys to work on any other series together?
Thanks guys! I've worked with Steve a lot in the past so it's been kind of refreshing working with him and Zombie together, it's definately different but Steve still shines through. The Nail is actually more of Zombie's brainchild with other CREEP projects originating from Steve and Zombie on a case by case basis. As far as future projects go, we have talked a little but nothing concrete yet, I'm sure you guys on the Corner will be some of the first to know if something happens. On another note I have a HUGE project coming up so look for an announcement to be made a San Diego Comic Con.

Oh, man, I hope it's Mange. You don't have to say if it is or not, but that'd be oh so cool. Of course, I'm not sure if that would count as huge, exactly...I guess we'll find out soon enough.

I don't know if it's just me, either, but I think Dwyer's art looks like early Disney animation...like the conceptual art for the human characters from their early, early features. I can't say the whole book is like this. Just some of the panels with Tori.

[ ![/COLOR]

My store finally got me my copy of Remains #2 this week (bout fucking time.) Kinda dug it. The first iss wasn't doing all that much for me (though I do dig Dwyer's art) but this one was definately better and you're right Ryan. Whereas the end of the 1st issue had me thinking "well, we'll give it and issue or two and see" the end of #2 has me very interested and wondering where the hell he's going to go with this. Not bad at all.

Also saw a bunch of the 30 Days comics. 30 Days of Night was first, then Return to Barlow? And now Dark Days? Haven't read any of them. Was thinking of picking up what they had today, but figured I'd just get the trades. Is that the order though?
I believe it's 30 days of night, then Dark Days, then return to Barlow. There also a 30 Days of Night Annual that came out between Dark Days and Return to Barlow. Barlow is the newest and it's still coming out, I believe they are only on issue 3 or 4 right now.
okay just wanted to thank everyone for giving such great advice.... took the long trip to the local comic shop and picked up a few of the series (ie. The Walking Dead, Remains, The Nail) and ive loved every little bit of them.
Anyone read The Nail no. 2 yet? It came out today didn't it?
No, The Nail issue 2 did not ship today. The Dark Horse web site says it ships 7/21/04.

Yeah, no Nail today, but I had a good day at the comic shop. Well, the one I've been going to...I just got sick of them not getting me the stuff for my box so i found another one thru a friend and it's awesome.

Picked up Aliester Arcane #3. Love this comic. Love the art. Kinda bummed it's only the 3 issues though. If I'd have known that I might have just waited for the TPB. Cause the story's kinda slight. Issue #1, telling the horror host's story was definately the best. Still, I liked the ending alot.

Picked up the "Walking Dead" TPB and issue #7. Wow, all the praise is dead on. I loved this comic, just got done reading em all. Didn't mind the new artists either. But this book is as great as everyone said it was. Glad to finally be on board with it and looking forward to the new ones. It's on #8 right? I think thats what someone said above. #7 is dated as May so I hope I'm not missing too many. The shop only had the TPB and #5 and 7----------nevermind just checked their website, #9 comes out next week. Guess I missed 8. If anyone wants to give me a brief summary on here that'd be awesome.

Picked up the Dark Horse Book of Witchcraft hardcover. I really dug the Book of Hauntings and though I haven't opened this one yet, it looks just a gorgeous as the Hauntings one.

Also picked up the Wake the Dead TPB. Figured I'd check that out.

And the new Spookshow International came out as well.

Yeah, that's a bummer about ARCANE only lasting till #3. Thought it was Niles' best thing going right now.

WALKING DEAD #8 was the first issue that started to spin its wheels for me and I don't care for the art nearly as much as Moore's.

*MINOR SPOILERS*

Rick and Lori reveal to the group that Lori's pregant, as we get closer to finding out whose kid it is. The gang finds an abandoned sub-division
and descide to set up camp. While scopping one of the houses out Rick is attacked by Zombies and almost bitten. Glen and Dale to the rescue.

Any fans of THE COFFIN out there? Seeing as how I missed the two issues Oni put out, I'm anxoiusly awaiting DEEP SLEEPER from Image in August.

I think this counts.

http://www.wearecareful.com/%7Ealfre...ars/Bears.html

It will eventually be a full length (30-40) page comic. If you click on the upper right hand section of the webpage you'll see an easter egg. That's something I'm considering using as the cover.

It's mostly my own digital photography manipulated on photoshop with a few found images off the net.

Everone seems to be forgetting this year's big hit, HACK/slash, on this thread. HACK/slash which tells the story of Casie Hack and her monstrous companion Vlad, who go crosscountry to hunt down and wipe out slashers. The seemingly unstoppable serial killers that terrorize those misbehaving teeny boopers. The Hack/slash:Euthenized one shot came out this April, and its sequel, Girls Gone Dead will be hitting shops in October.

There was also just released the werewolf tale,SCRATCH, about an adolescent werewolf discovering his true nature. However, while I plan on staying through this five issue mini from DC, the art by Sam Kieth leaves a tad bit to be desired.

Just last week I found an English-books-only bookstore in Zurich, and they had a comics section. Nothing much, but I did see a Hardcover edition of I AM LEGEND by Niles. I *loved* it. It read more like a Zombie book than a Vampire one, which I thought was great fun. Thinking of ordering the complete run of the Walking Dead series. What's other people's opinion of IAL? If I liked it, will I like the stuff being talked about earlier in the thread?

I've been tempted to pick up that "I Am Legend", huge fan of the novel. BUt haven't had the spare cash on me everytime I see the TPB. You should go ahead and pick up The Walking Dead. I finally got the TPB for issues 1-6 last week and #7 and it is as awesome as everyone says. Just great. I was kinda bummed #9 didn't come out yesterday. The Image website said it was supposed to be. sigh.

I really dug the Nail #2. I'm definately getting a more Rob vive than Steve, as Ryan and some others mentioned above, and these first 2 issues have been really cool. Instantly likable characters and a great situation. And the chase scene in #2 was pretty kick ass. It's really suprised me how much I'm liking it. I thought the title would be interesting from those involved, but I'm finding myself anxious for each new issue.

Remains #3. Well, the series is getting better. I'm still not completely sold, it does seem a little light and a lot more style than substance (though that style--the art--is fantastic.) But with each issue it does get a little more interesting.

Anyone else pick up the Man-Thing #1? I kinda dug it. Loved the cover. Had some okay stuff in it. I don't know though, as a long time Swamp Thing fan, it's always been hard for me to read Man-Thing as something different. But I thought it was pretty cool.

Also picked up BPRD Plague of Frogs 1-5 as I'd missed them. Only read 1 and 2 so far, but really loving them. Also digging Guy Davis' art (I used to be a huge Baker Street fan and loved his work on Wagner's Sandman Mystery Theatre--god that was a cool title.) But loving it so far.
Two questions though: I haven't read any non-Mignola stuff like Weird Tales or the previous BPRD issues, are they worth getting? Also, in Plague of Frogs, they mention that Hellboy is gone and they miss him.....is this from something that happened in BPRD or Weird Tales? Or did I miss something somewhere? Ok, three questions.
Picked up both Nail #2 and Man-Thing #1 this week. Things are gettin' mighty messy in The Nail and I'm LOVIN' it. For all of it's simplicity, I think if Zombie/Niles made a feature film, it could be pretty bad-ass.

Man-Thing? I like it so far. It's first issue had a lot more going for it than the first issue of the latest Swamp Thing.

The new Previews is out too. Apparently the second volume of The Walking Dead is coming out this October, for those who are having a hard time finding the single issues.
Just picked up The Nail No. 2 and I'm lovin' it (da da da da da). Can't wait to see what's gonna happen and I'm terrified at the same time cos with Rob Zombie you never know what's going to happen, wil Hilary be taken and The Nail have to race against time to save her or will she be taken, making Rex go fucking nuts enough to shove nails into everyone of their Satan worshipping skulls.

And other news... What was Scratch No.2 like? I read the first one and was intrigued and wasn't Hellblazer due out this week?
The second issue of Scratch was vastly underwhelming. No Batman. No major werewolf change. It was all kinda disappointing to tell ya the truth.
The Nail #2 is fanfuckingtastic. The storyline is dark, gritty, unflinching. Bravo to all involved with it. Glad to hear Tomb of Dracula is going to make a comeback. Bruce Jones knows horror; he got his start in the comics industry writing many nasty stories for Creepy and Eerie and his very much missed Twisted Tales and Alien Worlds comic books of the '80s were great fun.
The Nail #2 kicks some serious ass. The artwork and design of the monsters is fantastic. The storyline is very interesting and the total opposite of what I was expecting. Great stuff. WHen does #3 come out?

Also picked up Hack/SLash and issues 1 & 2 of Draculas Revenge. Haven't read them yet.
Has anyone read a 3 or 4 issue miniseries by Joe Lansdale, called Blood and Shadows? About a Texas P.I. who comes across a serial killer, an evil god of knives or somesuch.

I gotta once again add to the Nail 2 love. And Ryan, you are so right about it making a kick ass flick....that's what I was thinking during that chase scene. That scene moved so well, just awesome.

I finished the "Plague of Frogs" story in the Mignola written BPRD story (was so glad my shop still had all 5 issues on the shelf.) I gotta say, I fucking loved it! I mean, I'm a huge Guy Davis fan so that had alot to do with it, but the way they tied it in to past Hellboy stories and the even more lovrecraftian than normal storyline in that deserted Michigan town....wow. I was so thirlled to hear this is going to be a regular series (with month or two breaks between mini-series) written by Mignola and with Davis art. Made my day. I gotta say, I think I even liked it more than alot of the Hellboy stories.

Speaking of which, does anyone know why Hellboy is at the bottom of the ocean?
Is WALKING DEAD #9 already out? Or did some snot nosed punk fuck up putting it in my bag again? Ah, the inflicking painful lengths you'll go to for titles sometimes (he..hee..he)

Anyhoo.. much love for THE NAIL #2 here as well. On top of the bloody mayhem that has to reside around the corner, I'm really liking the depth of Rex' character . Placing his family squarely (hee..hee) in the center of the story almost made me forget he was a wrestler in this issue. Good stuff.

Since THE NAIL was the only book in my bag this week, I took a shot on SWORD OF DRACULA # 5. My god, I'm regreting not following this one from gestation. The art is b/w, which I know some have a problem with, (or do you?) but most new creators don't have the funds for elaborate color work. If someone like Image picks up their book, I don't see any reason to go against the dark tones that got'em there in the first place. Heck, it's akin to low budget filmaking.

SWORD OF DRACULA is a Horror/Action hybrid with Sci-fi elements, (talk about your cinematic appeal) that arguably is the greatest reimagining of one of the big four (monsters) in recent memory. The story is tight and constantly moving. The characters read like a whose who of historical and fictional vampiric history, brought together in a multi-verse that concluded in # 5 with Vlad set to take on a horde of Zombies with supremacy of the world in the balance! Unique book. Now my biggest decision is to wait on the trade, or rush to get the single issues.

To the BLOOD AND SHADOWS guy. I've got those around here somewhere. Landsdale is one of my favorite fiction writers, but to me, the comix havn't lived up to his prose. I will say that BLOOD AND SHADOWS
does come the closest though, and if you're a fan, worth the time.

See Hellboy: The Third Wish for your answer. I wish Mignola would get back up in running with big red and give us a new mini-series.

Dracula's Revenge sucks.

I finally managed to find a copy of Remains #3 which will be sent from another store on Tuesday. I'll go in Wednesday and pick that and Army of Darkness up.

So I've seen Dark Horse's Hauntings and Witchcraft books mentioned are they good. I leafed through them both today and they looked neat but are they worth the 14 bones?

Just got my Book of Witchcraft in the mail, finally. Gonna crack it open soon.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I am awful at keeping all these release dates straight in my head. Is Army of Darkness already out? I was under the impression that wasn't going to begin until September.
It comes out on Wednesday. Better be there that day or good luck finding it. There should be some sort of updated release list going here with all the comics that everyone's interested in. The only reason I know it's coming out is becasue I stopped by the comic shop today otherwise I would have been SOL.

Yeah, it's a pain. I've got like 4 publisher's on my favorites list and it's still a pain in the ass to keep these release dates straight. Plus, they're not always right. Image said Walking Dead #9 was coming out last wed and I couldn't find it anywhere and guys at the shop said it didn't come out. So maybe this week I guess.

Floyd, I loved both the Hauntings and Witchcraft books (and they have a zombie one coming out too.) First of all, they are simply gorgeous books. The covers and inserts, etc are beautiful and the stories are pretty cool. I think I enjoyed the Hauntings one more, but both are worth picking up. Plus, each have a pretty cool Mignola Hellboy story in 'em.

Thanks, Ryan, I thought I'd read all the Mignola/Hellboy stuff. Guess not. I hear you, I'd love to see some more Mignola written and drawn Hellboy stories. But still, I don't want him to stop writing BPRD. I really just can't get over how much I loved that Plague of Frogs. Now that they're going for that 'monthly book' feel in the Hellboy world, the story just had a different feel than previous Hellboy stories. Not as contained and more far-reaching.

Cool, I didn't know Last Train to Deadsville was coming out. Aces. Image's website said Walking Dead #9 was in stores now (?) and that #10 also comes out this Wednesday on the 28th.

Looking forward to picking up the Silent Hill TPB in Sept as well as Niles' Secret Skull.

Last Train was supposed to come out two weeks ago. Luckily I found a copy of Love Me Tenderloin so I wasn't overly upset. Still hurt a little though.

A few times these titles get set back, but I know my shop is guilty of NOT reserving everything on my list. If WALKING DEAD # 9 is indeed out, the normal proceedure is to go in and tell them they fucked up, then wait another couple of weeks to get the issue back in stock.

WALKING DEAD is such a hot title right now, new issues fly off the shelf. So you're right, get there the day of their supposed release, or you're pretty much screwed, even if you're on a reserve list.

The folks that think DRACULA'S REVENGE sucks (which it does), really should give SWORD OF DRACULA a whirl.

They don't carry it at my shop, but I'm bound to get around to it.

Picked up 2-4 issues of SWORD OF DRACULA yesterday. What an amazing book. Found out it's been optioned.

Another neat tidbit. This is an anthology comic that includes a short film. The AMERICAN SPLENDOR disc includes a comic that's associated with the movie.

Since comix are basically story boarded films I think combining the two has unlimited potential. Although the short film for FLOWERS ON THE RAZORWIRE isn't interactive with the other stories. Wouldn't it be great to tell a story that spans both media?

Man, it rock's so hard that you guys are enjoying The Nail, nothing feels better to an artist than to put something out there that surprises people. Steve, Rob, Jay and I really enjoyed doing this book and to see you guys eating it up just can't be beat, thanks to all of you!
In case no one heard about my big announcement at San Diego, Jay and I will be doing an arc on the main Spawn title starting with the last few pages of issue 139 and running through issues 140 and 141. It's going to feature the first ever comic appearance of a female Spawn character and promises to be a dark, twisted ride!
Keep it Bloody!

Well, my shop didn't have Last Train to Deadsville or Walking Dead waiting for me in my box. If these actually came out....sigh....I hate these guys. I mean how hard is it to order the shit your subscribers have on their list?

I though Ashes 2 Ashes was all right. I kinda dug the art. Almost had the look of animation cells, like they were stills from a cartoon. The story was okay, though I coulda done without half of Ash's lines (and everyone else's) being repeats of movie lines.
