Just a summer job, but that means I have to deal with peoples NEEDS. And people are assholes.

Ohhhhhhhhhh no, no, no, no! Food service on any level is HELL. People get pissy when food is involved. Everything has just got to be absolutely fucking FLAWLESS or you will hear about it, most likely in a loud manner from an over-weigh middle-aged house-wife who saw Passion of the Christ 3 times.

My first job was working in the gift shop at the Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa, which was pretty bad already because we had a lot of hands-on type shit in the store which kids would just love to push to it's most extreme limits. But it got worse when, during my second year, the gift shop became responsible for the Cafe, so I would have to pull shifts working the register there sometimes.

We didn't have a name for the cafe other than the "MOSI Cafe" but if they had asked me to come up with a title I would have chosen "Nightmare Buffet" or "The Soul-Robbing Eatery". I've blacked out most of my memories working there.

I hope everything goes well. If anything, it will make you appreciate the common restaurant worker a little bit more after you're done working there.

Have any of you read Nickel and Dimed? I highly recommend it, particularly if you want to be depressed about the food service industry. Not only are people assholes, but it appears managers are as well.

Oh and I'm a klutz, so I'll most likely be dropping some food on people.

I did that once. I was 16 working at McDonalds. lobby was a mess, busy busy day. the pricks (also called customers) were too lazy to put their crap in the garbage cans and instead just piled it ontop of the garbage can where the trays go. It was a leaning tower when they sat down next to the garbage cans. When I went to move it, it all toppled down.

I was mildly embarassed and felt bad for that old lady, but deep down...I knew she had it comin'

Just count yourself lucky you landed yourself a job, especially nowadays.

My first job was an assistant manager at the uk equivelent of a kwick e mart - never again.

But I found the best trick to get your own back on the "pissed off for no reason types" was to remain calm reasonable - it seems they have no defense against that.

Stormin, I dunno, I think the job market is getting better. So that's sort of a non-argument now. Or at least a weenie non arguement.

Not saying you're a weenie. Saying the non arguement is a weenie.

The summer job market is lousy because of piss ant high schoolers getting jobs first.

I like to use a variation of a favorite line from Aliens to describe the clientele I've had to deal with in my lifetime:

"Fuckin' dumb-ass (customers)."

Just keep that thought in the back of your mind, and you'll be OK.

actually the worst needs are going to be those of your server, chefs, bartender and maitre di, which came first, the disgruntled worker or the disgruntled customer? i just don't see how you can belittle the clientele when a lot of servers themselves are whiny backstabbing penny pinching little sons o' bitches... have fun sharing tips at work!!!...

Does your job require you to accompany your boss in dance offs?

On the plus side, the stories you'll no doubt be posting here will be more entertaining than ever.

I think I'm in the minority here... I work in a coffeehouse in Norcross (GA) and I absolutely LOVE it. The owner is a fantastic guy, the manager is like my big sister, we serve awesome pastries and coffee... and I probably sound like a total blithering idiot, so I'm going to stop now, but yeah. This is definitely the best job that I have ever had. I've had some really shitty food service jobs though (working at Brusters ice cream store...ughhhh...)-- good luck at your new job!

Yea that sounds swanky but this place is sorta on the slightly fancy side, so I will have to deal with rich snotty pricks.

Wait, so what the hell does a server assistant do?

Answers of "I assist the server" will be met with fisticuffs.

Kitchen Confidential is another shining example of the behind-the-scenes action at restaurants. Tony Bourdain is my hero.

I must second the love for "Kitchen Confidential" - that was a top book.

usually implemented in th finer dining insitutions, you're basically the server's little helper bitch, usually carrying the big tray while the server chats it up a little, doing prep and side work while the servers are standing around drinking coffee and smokin' 'rettes, you're the lowest of the low, even lower than the bus boys and dishwashers 'cause they're at least in full control of their stations, server says jump and you gotta turn water into wine, but the lucky few server helpers get the chance to be promoted to full server status, inheriting the right to be a total bitter prick...

I'll join you in the minority. I've been in food and bev most of my adult working life, and not only do I love it, but it's fat cash, (if you're good at it), and you can go just about anywhere and find work.

I spent my mid-twenties splitting my year between a resort town in Michigan in the summer and a resort town in Colorado for the ski season.

Brian, my advice to you is, first and foremost, figure out if you have the temperment for food service, because you're right. People ARE stupid and they will piss you off to no end if you can't keep smiling even while telling some dickhead that, "I'm so sorry, sir, that your water glass has been empty for .35 seconds, and of course I'll take 20% off your bill."

And remember, it's just food. It's not brain surgery.

Good Luck, man!

Its easy work and the money is pretty good. The only thing I have to do is really just run around all day. Could be ALOT worse.

People who work in resturaunts are lazy, assholes, pompous, rude, nasty and downright bitter little bloodsuckers.

The worse is when some jackass 17 year old tries to tell me how to do my fucking job.

And hey holy shit, no problems with customers. I'm surprised as hell.
