Favorite Broadcasting team - baseball

Unfortunately, one of the things about living in Toronto is that the Jays have not always had the play-by-play/analyst team. Buck Martinez knew his baseball, but his voice got grating at times. Anyhow, thank God the days of Fergie Oliver are over.

I'm surprised the major networks can't find better people. Among the analysts, McCarver has always been pretty weak, and seems to only be on the card for the name recognition alone. Joe Morgan isn't much better. Some have baseball smarts, but no real insight, let alone humour.

My favorite: The team of Costas and Kubek back in the 80s. Costas had a real smartass outlook, while Kubek had a sharp, dry wit and called it like it was. He was also great for the Jays. Much better than Garagiola/Scully.

Other favorite play-by-play/analyst teams?

I hate Joe Morgan and most national analysts. I like Al Leiter when he did the NLCS. Any game Chis Berman should be watched on mute.

Harry Caray and Steve Stone are my all time fav. When Harry got drunk he got fun which was just about every game it seemed.

Bob Costas is good even if he is a Cardnial fan and a arrogant little shit. I wis Fox could get him for the baseball playoffs.

Growing up in Iowa, Colorado and Arkansas, we obviously didn't have any major league teams, but we sure as shit got WGN. That meant a lot of Cubs games, and a lot of Stone and Caray...and they were a good combo.

However, my fave is Jerry Remy and Don Orsillo/Sean McDonough on NESN. Those dudes have the best time. I'm so glad the DirecTV feed is 99% NESN broadcasts because I go nuts when a Sox game is on w/o them.

i was really impressed last year when leiter did the nlcs. unlike boone when he did the alcs. he was an absolute mute.

If we're talking all-time favorites, I'll go with Harry Kalas and Richie Ashburn.

Vin Scully and whomever.

Bob Uecker was fun to listen to when the Brewers were (are) terrible. The World Series he did with Bob Costas was actually very good and entertaining. I wish more people realized he's a good announcer, and not just knew him from Movies and TV....

Bob Costas is the fucking worst. Completely lacking in actual personality, he just spits out lots of knowledge that often times is only meant to let everyone know how much he's studied. His broadcasts are about him & that ruins it.

I agree with Nick about Scully. Very few guys could carry a game all by themselves, but he's that good. I'm a homer so I love the local Sox team.

I think most national broadcast teams blow, but I do enjoy some of the guys Fox puts out there. Joe Buck & Steve Lyons are very good.

What, no love for Joe, Don, Skip and Pete? Heathens...

If I'm watching a nationally televised game my favorite pair have to be John Miller and Joe Morgan. I already got a soft spot for Miller cause he does some killer radio work for the Giants and I think him and Morgan do a pretty good job together.

Well being from Toronto I gotta say I love Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth. Jerry's nasal voice gives the perfect home run call. Tom's been doing Jays games since they came into the league in 79 and missed his first game this year due to the passing of his father. He's also missed more since then as he's been diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Here's hoping you get back in the booth soon Tom!

It's all about the radio guys...

Pat Hughes and Ron Santo. Patrick is a consummate pro with a great voice and warm manner, and Ronnie (whom the sportswriters need to stop ass-raping and put in the Hall NOW) bleeds Cubbie blue and is so unabashedly biased that you can't help but smile.

Being a Yankee fan, I used to love the Frank Messer, Bill White, and Phil Rizzuto days. Also, as a fan, I can't stand Michael Kay or John Stirling. If you think Chris Berman is bad, try listening to Stirling on radio.
Ron Santo is an idiot who destroys broadcasts with stupid questions and a complete lack of understanding about the game he was so good at. Pat Hughes is very good, though. No arguement there.

Gary Cohen and whomever on the radio. Fran Healy is trash, and to tell the truth, outside of Keith Hernandez, I could care less about anybody on the television side of things.

Hernandez is the Mets' analyst? Cool.

I second. There's a reason Kalas is in the hall and there's a reason he's the voice of NFL films.

It's outta heeeeeeeeere!!!!

No mention of Ernie Harwell?

Sorry, but he is the all time best broadcaster of baseball. Period. He knows more history and is great at illustrating the game when you can not see the game, but only hear it. Plus he doesn't make personal feelings or thoughts known and calls an honest balanced ball game. Every play-by-play personality steals from Ernies bag of tricks. Especially Sutton on TBS.

Something Joe Morgan needs to learn to do. It seems like he always takes cheap shots at people he doesn't like. Especially Billy Beane. Actually, all of ESPN's people does that. Berman always kisses the ass of his favorite players.

I used to like Tim McCarver and either Buck - and they are still pretty good - but I think McCarver has gotten to be a bit like Bill Walton is for the NBA.

Carey is annoying outside of Cubbie fans. But I do have a soft spot for the drunk...
