The upcoming dilemma...ESPN vs. Madden

August can't get here quick enough. The coming of Madden has always been a good omen becaue of the return of the NFL. Now I have been a huge madden fan forever, but it has had its flaws. I never really felt ESPN's series had enough to push it over the top, but good god NFL 2k5 looks amazing!!!

At Teamxbox.com they have been doing weekly features on NFL2k5, and its blowing me away. The presentation took a huge leap with virtual chris berman and suzy kolber's. I like that on the xbox berman will actually go over actual highlights from your game thanks to the HD in the xbox.

But what really sold me is the right stick juke system. The one thing that always bothered me about madden was the very rigid control scheme for RB's or after the catch situations. There is a spin button, a juke button, and a stiff arm button. All the moves performed look the same, and timing a spin cutback move is great, but its looks bland after the 15th time.

I just saw a video demo with LT using the right stick juke system...wow. It is so intuitive. Pushing back on the stick =quick stop, pushing up = stuttuer step, pushing L + R jukes, but the great thing is combining those motions with rolls left or right

i.e. i push right, and then roll the stick left, the player will juke right and then spin back to the left and continue going...it just seemed to obvious that this was needed in football games.

ESPN has always had better animations also, both camps EA and Sega are doing big hit tackle buttons, but ESPN is looking mighty fine this year. and for 20 dollars who can pass up that deal.

Madden is going to have numbers online though, which might be the only reason i would buy both games. But wow, ESPN is looking really good.

Did I read somewhere that the new ESPN game was going to sell for under twenty-five bucks, to try and grab some Madden fans?
Sports games suck.

Well so do you, but we let you hang around.

Touché.
Fuck Madden. EA should improve the graphics and gameplay instead of releasing the same game with new rosters every year. ESPN football and NFL 2K5 will get my gaming money.

Yes ESPN NFL 2k5 is selling for 19.99 preorder right now.

I hear rumors also that they may advance the release date to July 28th to get a jump on madden even more so. I am glad someone is finally taking it right to EA's doorstep. LIke i said, I love madden, but its becoming a bit stale. Same animations, same gameplay.

Thanks for the confirmation Fazer, I wasn't sure where I had seen it and thought maybe I was thinking of last year's game or something.

I think I'll pre-order this bad boy right now...
They cant give that shit away. ESPN last year was awful, Madden all the way.
No dilemna for me. Lazy-ass EA and their diehard zombie fans who shell out 50 bucks a year for what amounts to new rosters and a few tweaks can go fuck themselves. NFL 2k5 all the way.

By the way, that $19.99 price for NFL 2K5 is not a pre-order gimmick price. That's the actual retail price the game will be selling at!
Put it this way -

Based on last year's effort alone (to say nothing of the improvements in this year's edition), if ESPN were $49.99 and Madden was priced at $19.95, I'd still by ESPN.

Honestly, this one is a no-brainer. Even the diehards that insist on buying Madden every year shouldn't be too bothered with buying both games.

Personally, I think you are giving the Madden acolytes far too much credit. But I agree with everything else in your post.

ive already deciced on ESPN. looks MUCH better than madden. and if you dont know that, have a look at this:

I agree with the "wow". Madden morons can go to hell. Sega has put more love into their ESPN series. All EA seems to do each year is add the current "hip hop and rock" flavor of the month. Let the bodies hit the floor, indeed. EA Trax (tm) is garbage.

Please spend your hard earned / stolen money on ESPN 2k5. And when EA zombies get mad, just tell them that theirs is a series that started off with an ambulance driving on the field and running people over. Give me a break.
i was reading an interview with EA, in which they were shocked at how much better this looked than madden 2005, they actually admitted it, they then said they called in an official meeting on the subject. the outcome? buy up 80% of the market share, meaning just advertise the fuck out of it. they made no attempt to make their game better, fuckin EA whores just said dont worry we'll advertise it more. now ESPN only has 20% of the market share.
I have been a die-hard Madden fan for the last 5 years or so, but yes, they've been losing me with the same predictable gameplay, and with "new" changes that still allow the CPU to score at will on you if you're too far ahead, and still have the same animations, and same graphics. The concept of the stadium, ticket prices, moving the team, etc., is great, but when you get to the point where you'd rather do the non-season stuff over playing the actual games, you're losing me. And that's where I am right now. I think I will definitely take up ESPN and check it out, especially for $19.99 (and even less at my local used gaming store where I'll have at least 2 games to trade in for this one).

That EA interview is sadly unsurprising. The Madden Series has become the "coke" of video game football. Its got the name recognition and it is giong to hold a large share of the market for a long time. They always state that during the trade shows they go play ESPN and are always surprised and impressed by what is in the new edition which forces them to go back to the drawing board, but I guess this time they are just going to bury ESPN in its advertising wake.

The hit stick really excited me, but EA stated most of their new animations come to play with the hard hits. I do like the emphasis on defense with the defensive hot routes and all, but the game just doesn't change. It is still the online play that makes me think I will buy both, because im pretty sure there will be a ton more Madden players online then there will be ESPN...although interestingly enough, unless I misread this somewhere, ESPN sold better on the xbox than madden 2004.

That's what I read as well.
With ESPN at $20 there is absolutely no reason to not get it.
Hey SPEED--which console were those shots taken from? My initial instinct is to say Xbox just from how good they look, but I want to make sure.

Oh, and one more thing: screw Madden. If ESPN 2k5 looks that good, and it's only 19.99, I think that it's going to be a definite must have for me. And if it plays half as good as it looks, it will beat Madden hands down.

It is probably xbox screens. I think in the same article that I read about ESPN's better sales on the xbox than Madden they also said that Visual Concepts decided to develop the game for the xbox and port it to the ps2, so they added all those fancy technical terms like triple pass rendering and actually seeing muscles flex and waht not.

Well, its official 19.99, releasing ON AUGUST 10th...the same day as madden.

The video football wars are heating up.
This thread is awesome. I was considering picking up the new ESPN already but for the price it can't be overlooked. I have hated Madden for almost 10 years now. Outside of its early Genesis incarnations i've never been a fan and never owned one of those games.
Just the fact that ESPN has the balls to release the game for $19.99 gets my vote.

The problem is, will casual game fans just assume that $19.99 means poor quality?

I bought Madden 2004, and I thought it was alright. Not much different then 2003.
i used to hate madden. my favourite football game ever was quarterback club 99 on N64, goddamn that game was gorgeous. but then those games arent around anymore so i had to go for madden. ESPN looks brilliant though.

as for those screens, they were takin from the official website, i would assume that they were taken from the best version, that being the xbox, and also because pS2 could never handle that .

one more thing, i dont know if you guys read this already, IGN made a list of five best (more like ten) things about ESPN NFL 2K5. here is the link:

http://ps2.ign.com/articles/522/522096p1.html
post #29 of 193
That explains the difference in graphic quality. Doesn't EA develop Madden for the PlayStation 2, and then port it to GameCube and Xbox? If they want to compete in terms of looks, they're fighting a losing battle.

Thank God I decided to pick up an Xbox.
Man, I can't wait to pop 2k5 and pick the Skins then see that lovely face of Joe Gibbs instead of Spurrier!
Good God . . .did you read that article? Amazing. Xbox owners would have to be on crack not to buy this game. You can use music on your hard drive in the game ?!?!?! Awesome.

That just sealed it. I'm getting this game. I get soooo tired of hearing the same damn menu music from some band that I don't know/don't care about...It'll be nice to be able to play to some Audioslave or something.
but wouldnt you rather the company choose an eclectic compilation of artists for you? like bon jovi and sum 41? hahahaha. yeah thats great isnt it? you get to pick what songs you want for each moment of the game. i can already envision it now...... KoRn - Blind opening up the game....... ARE YOU REAAADDDDYYYY!!!!

man i think sega sports should be paying me for all the promoting im doing for their game hahaha.

I am really waiting to see what all the gaming sites say about the preview build of Madden.

Most of the big sites dont say anything bad about preview builds, but I want to see how the features and gameplay are going to compare to this preview build of ESPN that has already blown people away. The online options for Madden still haven't been totally revealed, but lets see what happens in the next few weeks.
I am pleased to see all the Sega Football love in this thread.
And I like your quote Murdoc! Saw Spurrier do that way too much last year .
The folks at EA will probably be pimping the online features for Madden big time. Right now, it appears to be all they have. And I don't think it will be enough.

God, I can't wait to play this.

__________

And now, introducing your Atlanta Falcons!!!
*Welcome to The Jungle starts playing*
nah EA will totally promote this game solely with its amazing graphics....

may i point out from the URL that this is an xbox screen from the official site.

my favourite thing about EA is that when they release a new version of one of their games next year, they make the previous one obselete online, so you pretty much have no choice but to buy the new one.

Madden's graphics seem on par with ESPN's. I thought last years ESPN was a bit lacking compared to madden, but this year they both seem to be on equal footing.

Seriously? I disagree. Just going by the screenshots in this very thread I would say that SEGA/ESPN easily trumps EA in the graphics department as well.

I think the lighting looks fantastic in the ESPN shots...the player detail on the Madden screenshot looks greatly improved from last year. Granted im sure they will both look great, but I have seen a whole lot more of ESPN and I think it does look better, but I think the differences are nothing to get too excited about, they both look great.
And the truth is Madden doesn't look THAT much better than the initial next gen version from 2001. And that in a nutshell exemplifies why EA are fucktools that get away with robbery once every 12 months.

hahah, i love you carl. As a madden-ite who is slowly being converted to ESPN, I think the graphics are better for both, but ya you can only do so much in one generation of console lifetimes.
the graphics in madden are muddy and plain, where as the graphics in ESPN are sharp and hi res. plus the detail is awesome, in madden the lines on people's arms seem drawn on. but thats just me. and carl yes its true, they will force you to buy the next version if you wanna play online.
How is ESPN able to sell this for $20? Aren't they going to lose a fuckload of money?

I'll buy an extra copy to distribute to one of my Madden-entranced friends to show them the light.
Thread Starter
Sega has a new distribution deal with Take-Two interactive. Apparently this move has allowed them to cut the price down. Granted I am sure they hope it will sell them more copies which might recoup any profit loss due to the price cut, but this is obviously a competitive move on sega's part.

Both franchises are going to be around for a while, and I think this is sega's golden opportunity to showcase what they think is the better game to a wider audience. And when/if they convery madden owners, they will more likely then not buy the next year's edition at whatever price it happens to be at.
at least we know the overall hype on the internet is all in ESPN's favour, although that means nothing to all the other people who just see madden on the shelf and pick that up on name value alone, you know these people, the parents also, but at least if they see one thats less than hald the price of madden they will pick it up. i think thats what they are going for.
After reading "The top ten things to know about Madden 2005" on IGN website, does anyone else think that with the new Defense orientated gameplay, it sounds tough to score period? Dare I say too tough? I'm sure the diehards will love it, but for the casuals like myself, I'm not too sure about it. I love both Madden and ESPN, but is too much realism going to "scare away some of us?" For those of us who just want to play and not have to study other teams' tendencies in order to compete, are we in for a rude awakening? Maybe the article is exaggerating the point.

I read it...I like the defensive intensity applied in the new madden. ESPN seems to be doing some very similar stuff too.

I dont think it should scare anyone away though. It just gives you more control over the defense. I am sure you wont be using it every down, but if you know you are playing against vick, being able to spy him every defensive down no matter what your original play call was, will really help you play a better game.

Or, if you know your d will cover the recievers well every down, yet the offense keeps burning you with flat routes out to a RB or FB, i think you will be happy that you can have a LB cover the flat every down without having to change the entire play.
