The upcoming dilemma...ESPN vs. Madden - Page 4

I finally pulled myself away form this game. God its addictive. The franchise mode is soooo deep with the weekly prep stuff. Almost too deep.

The online game still has some kinks to work out. Once you get into a game its very smooth and awesome. Its just getting a game started is difficulty right now, but I imagine that is just one small hiccup that Sega will fix soon.

QB spying is an issue. NO ONE IS SURE IF IT ACTUALLY WORKS. The individual assignment of qb spying is what i am talking about. I hope Sega comments on that soon.

Also, for those franchise mode guys out there. Just a little something to consider. The AI trade logic is HORRIBLE. Brett Favre, Randy moss, and other HUGE SUPERSTARS are being traded left and right each week. I highly recommend that when you start a franchise mode, you select EVERY TEAM TO CONTROL. You can attach your VIP to the team of your choice and actually only play their games, but to avoid these ludicrous trades, you should put yourself in charge of each team so the CPU doesnt have control over the roster. This way its also easier to keep up with current goings on in the NFL...ala the Titans releasing Eddie George and picking up Antwaon smith etc etc.

But these are all non gameplay issues, save for the qb spy, which I just am puzzled by. The gameplay is frankly perfect. I keep on marvelling at how realistic the animations are. Madden has nothing on these animations. I mean recievers and DBs actually have aerial battles for a ball in the air. My favorite instance is when a reciever goes up in the air for a catch, and a DB just NAILS the guy right in the gut, knocking him backwards IN THE AIR. You just dont see that kind of stuff in Madden.

Also, running game is much smoother. Following the blockers andpicking the right holes is very necessary to succeed. One nice thing about the running is you have so many options...using the face buttons or using the R stick, which works surprisingly well, but takes some getting used to. One little running animation I like is the RB putting his hand on lead blockers or O linemen rather than the Madden "pinball" action when going through a hole.

Also, I love that the shovel pass is in some playbooks. It is really fun.

Wow...amazing stuff.

AND to top it all off...the one Online League I have joined hasnt even started yet. And that is just a WHOLE other awesome part of this game. Your league info, VERY deep stats, records, schedules are all put on the internet, and when viewed it is displayed like ESPN.COM displays real sports scores.

BEST SPORTS GAME EVER.

That sucks! I love doing franchise and have been planning on creating and starting a team but this makes me sad. Hopefully its not too big a task to overlook every teams roster. Played a little exhibition man its amazing how good this game looks. Its like the real thing almost. I'm having a bit of a hard time mastering the moves it'll come though. I'm glad I grabbed this one!

Sort of on-topic, does anyone know of a good site that talks about football fundamentals for laymen? Things like reading the defense, explanations of the differences between nickel and dime formations, that sort of thing?

Sports games should come with decent tutorials for novices...

Yeah. I totally agree with that. I've always had some fun playing football video games, but I've never felt that I got all out of it I could since I didn't really know how to utilize all the plays in the book. I would randomally pick defenses, and sometimes I could make them work, and I would have a handfull of offensive plays that I would run and I could get them to work 7 out of 10 times, but I never really knew exactly what I was doing. A good tutorial would be nice.
Haha, I feel the same way. I use the Coach's Pick (Left trigger) a lot on this one, especially on defense.

JACOB...you know what almost made me cry when I was searching through the game.

Go to the extras and look for a reference manual or something like that.

It is basically a football 101 index.

IT COVERS A LOT. Everything from what a counter is to more complicated things like what the joker formation is and how a toss is different from a strong iso running play, etc etc.

I consider myself a big football fan, but I still found myself reading through the in depth information in the reference section. VERY INFORMATIVE.

After a little more research on some other boards...apparently the injury default settin gis too high. And when the CPU simulates games, a lot of stars are going down with huge injuries, so it trades them.

Pull down injury slider before in franchise mode and some of the trades should be less ludicrous, all though as of right now the only true fix is to control all teams.

Everyone who hasn't bought this yet needs to pick it up at Circuit City - it's only $16.99!

Well fuck me running, it appears this game is not available for the Gamecube. Good thing I rented it to give it a shot on my friends PS2.

I'm a little disappointed with the Create-a-Team feature. Very little customization, you basically pick from pre-generated teams and stadiums. Creating the uniforms and stadiums was one of my favorite things in Madden 2004, and the bare-bones options in ESPN are pretty boring.

Game play is good, just takes a little getting used to after having played Madden so much over the last year. Still, I was able to beat the Panthers with the Bucs on Pro level 28-0 my first full game, and that was after a scoreless first half.

Good game, but not the Madden killer I'd heard it made out to be.

You know Richard I have been a madden player forever...but if you give espn's gameplay an open chance, you will realize its MUCH deeper and much more true to the sport than madden.

It really feels like an NFL game. but a lot of people enjoy the more arcadey aspect of Madden, which undoubtedly makes it more accessible to the masses, but If you want the next step up in realism it has to be ESPN.

THANKS Fazer, much appreciated. My copy arrives tomorrow. We may need to start a sticky thread for matchups. {hint hint}

My brother has the game, he got it last night. I have to admit it's a damn good game, but the only thing really worthwhile about it is the gameplay and the Season mode. Everything else are just add-ons. It's definently better than Madden 2004, but 2005 isn't out yet so I'm going to have to wait and see how they add up. Madden has some nice editions whith gameplay and everything this year too. In the end though, I'm sure they're gonna add up pretty much the same....IMHO.
Oh, and that Crib feature is a complete waste of time, taking up space that could have been given over to deeper customization.

Off topic, but I got a little 2 month free xbox live card thing with this, and I just had a few questions to ask about getting started on xbox live. Since this card has a code on it for 2 free months, do I have to use a credit card for sign-up? Can I just plug my xbox into my modem and have it work? does the xbox link cable work as a cable to hook up to xbox live?

You are REQUIRED to have a credit card to sign up for Xbox live, even if you "pay " for it exclusively with 2 month free cards (which is very possible.)

As far as teh xbox link cable, it is an overpriced ethernet cable used to connect any PC device for networking or broadband purposes. You can get a normal ethernet cable from the store and hook it into your broadband modem and get online. you dont have to buy an "Xbox Link cable"

Ah, I see, herd mentality only in here, huh?

I just think it would have been nice to have used the time and space for something actually related to FOOTBALL than to having Jamie Kennedy call me up for a game while I'm playing Cricket.
its not a herd mentality anything. your complaining over depth in a game that doesnt even cost twenty dollars, instead of realising what a freakin bargain that is for a game this good. seriously. get over it.

whats next? your gonna start complaining at how shit the clothes are at the salvation army?
I didn't even pay for it, I RENTED it, and that doesn't mean I can't dislike it.
yeah well its a crap complaint. had the game been brought out for full price like madden will, then it would have been unforgivable. the fact that sega brought it out dirt cheap means that can be forgiven. BFD.
So if only pay a buck fifty see Catwoman a few weeks from now, I have no right to complain?

Nothing should be given a free pass just because it's cheap. If it's unforgiveable at $49.99, it's unforgiveable at $19.99.

Besides, this game WOULD have been $49.99 if they weren't hell-bent on undercutting Madden, which they should have done by making the game BETTER, not just CHEAPER.

haha calm down guys.

I am no fan of the crib thing either. But on a long term basis, they have a lot of fun lookin gthings to unlock in it.

Apparently it was a very popular feature in 2k4, hence the new and improved version in 2k5.

My copy arrived this morning, can't wait to try it out.

Carmen Electra's team CHEATS! Fucking bitch.
Well, I like it a lot, even though my pass percentage is horrible (with Vick). The commentary can get repetitive, but that's not unusual. The graphics are gorgeous, sound is good, and the gameplay is fun and challenging. All in all, for me, it was money more than well spent.

GOD I AM HORRIBLE ONLINE. These guys online just smoke my defenses left and right. And they move their D-lineman like little bitches to keep me from running at all!

I know how you feel, some people get the game and don't rest, don't turn it off until they master every aspect of gameplay. Also, you can turn the AI auto trade off I think.

But on a negative note, there are a few glitches in this game. Yea, I know it's $20 but people that was all just a marketing ploy....they didn't need to do that they wanted to so they could get more people to buy it, and it'll probably work. Here is a glitch I noticed...

1). Has anyone ever noticed when you run whether it's long or short....sometimes it comes up negative!!!!! My brother was playing with the Baltimore Ravens and ran 99 yards with Jamal Lewis, but when they showed it it said he lost 99 yards. I mean WTF!!!! By the end of the game, it said he only gained 35 yards or something. This is a problem if you're like me and you care about your stats.

2). This isn't really a glitch, but I don't like how you automatically lose points if you don't train your players. Plus, why is it so hard to raise the team focus level...whereas all you have to do is hold a team meeting to raise the morale?

But like Fazer said, the AI trade logic is pretty messed up...but can you really expect a computer to make wise, human-like decisions? The QB spying is questionable, etc, etc.

Now, on the positive note. The gameplay is the best I've seen so far in ANY football game, but don't could Madden out just yet...they've added some new things too and I'll have to wait and see if it's any good. The graphics are INCREDIBLE, my brother has it on the XBOX so I can't compare it to the PS2, but from what I've seen from the dirt to the shadows and uniforms...it's all beautiful baby!!!!! The sound is nice too, but if you turn the crowd volume up too high you won't be able to hear the commentaters at times.

Overall score...4/5
I remember last year i played some games online. I got my ass kicked at first, but then figured out that the best way of winning was running the ball a lot and picking a team with a really good defense. Most people played with only three teams -- Eagles, Dolphins, Bucs. This year you could probably add New England and Carolina to that list.

you know I have played A LOT of games and have never once come across the negative rushing yards glitch. If i remember correctly, someone pinpointed it to an issue with clipping being called on a play or something like that.

Really? Is it hard? My dad owns a video store, and I have about 10 of the fuckers lying around here. And, in a month, I'll have broadband.

Well Ign has their Madden review up as does Gamespot and it looks like all the Sega Fanboys should be getting ready to eat some crow. This years version is gonna be incredible. I have been playing ESPN lately and as great as the graphics are i cant help but think Maddens gameplay is gonna kick its ass. Defensive hot routes and hit stick are gonna be amazing.
I bought both of them. Couldnt pass up ESPN for 20 bucks. They both have their perks. The juke stick thing in ESPN is awesome. I think they're both equal. They both have their ups and downs.

Before you all all starting complaining again this is from easports.com and i thought you would all have a laugh about it becus of ea's shameless selfpromotion and the way theyr're rubbing it in.

The Madden NFL Football franchise has been the dominant player in the pro football video game field for years, often being compared to an 800-pound gorilla, but it was expected to see its stiffest competition yet this year.

ESPN NFL 2K5 -- the game that dropped its price to an unprecedented $19.99 -- sold just under 800,000 units in the month of July. Sure, that number is a lot higher than in year's past, but it's no 1.3 million in a week! It just goes to show, you really do get what you pay for.

It also goes to show you that some posters don't know how to read a phony/biased press release. The figure of 1.3 million is the number of units shipped, McFly, not sold. EA says "sold" but they really mean sold to retailers not customers. That's why they can get away with such a ludicrous statement. Software companies do this type of "creative accounting" all the time. I know because my friend is a District Manager for 5 Electronics Boutique Stores here in Los Angeles (their 3rd biggest market). He said that ESPN 2K5 is still outselling Madden to the point where all his stores not only had to order more 2K5's to keep up with the demand, but for the first time they've been selling only half the Madden units they usually do the first week of its release.

Also keep in mind that ESPN 2K5 is only on two platforms (Xbox and PS2) while Madden is on three (Xbox, PS2, and GameCube). That's another 10 million potential users. And when you consider that the only reason it's selling on the Cube at all is because it's the only football game available for that system, EA's numbers just ain't that impressive. If you don't believe me, check the NPD data sales for August when they're released in a week or two.

Shameless self promotion? More like shameful self-denial.

Next time read between the lines.
