2004 NFL Thread

Thread Starter
apparently the previous thread was erased for eternity by Tom Wilkinson... so here is the new one.

- Couch is a $1.3 million benchwarmer in Green Bay.
- Shockey needs foot surgery and a better talent agent.
- Emmitt Smith to start in Arizona.
- Delhomme gets 5 year extension worth a lot of money.
- Kurt Warner's wife still ugly as sin.

talk amongst yourselves.

not a bad move i guess if they're thinking favre could actually get injured.

the new york media has so over hyped this guy. what does he have like 4 career td's?

Emmitt Smith to start in Arizona.
emmitt's been washed up for 5 year's.

great to see this. i haven't yet seen the actual breakdown of the contract but i'm sure it will be back loaded. i heard he does get something like 12 mil in money upfront. so he's guaranteed atleast a couple year's of top dollar on average.

don't you mean his look a like mom.
the delhomme deal is basically a 2 year deal for a little over 10 mil. he recieves a total of 3 mil in roster bonuses for the first 2 seasons with a salary in both season for a little over 500k. he also recieves a 6.1 mil signing bonus but this is gonna be spread out over 6 year's. then in 2006 his salary goes up to 4.8 mil and carolina has to decide whether to give him a 3 mil roster bonus to pick up the final year of the contract. so basically he's gonna be released or he'll have to restructure his contract. still it's not a bad little increase in salary from what he was supposed to make this season.

What will happen first?

T.O. complaining that Donovan McNabb can't hit him in the chest with a pass

OR

Keeshawn complaining that the QB cant hit him in the chest with a pass.
Well, first of all, TO is ALREADY complaining.

And I think Meshawn will actually wait a little while before he starts being a bitch.
i honestly hope that keeshawn does good for the boys because will i live in dallas but, he can be a lil bitch at times. Antonio Bryant is already whining saying that he gets all the passes in practice(maybe keeshawn is had something to do with that).
This is a weird time in sports, the NFL suddenly seems like the most predictable of the three majors...
True until the season starts. One of the best things about the NFL is there are always the cinderella stories like Carolina, Rams and the Ravens. Predictable maybe now but not later.
Although its a very en vogue pick, I think the Lions are FINALLY going to do some damage this year. Being a niner fan, I would love to see Mooch do well and I think he finally has the tools to do it.

There offense looks spectacular on paper. Lets see how Harrington manages it.

And TO is going to complain all the time, being a niner fan I know that. The trick is to give him the ball often. If he makes the mistakes, he will shut up. I think he is going to be huge this year, even WITH the extra attention secondaries are going to give him seeing that he is the only deep threat on philly.
i like shockey. he's got a big mouth, that's for sure, but the guy can play (when he's healthy). but was he this injury-prone in college as well? his feet are freaking injury magnets!

and i bet keeshawn will do most of the bitching between the two. TO won't need to complain about not getting enough balls, cause he's the only receiver in philly with something that resembles talent, so i'm sure mcnabb will be more than happy to look at him as often as he can.

Shockey is still young, and he's a big, strong, and talented player. A little overhyped? Maybe, but the guy CAN play.

And you are wrong about Emmitt. Maybe the last 2 seasons haven't been up to his earlier years, but the guy was still rushing great 3 or 4yrs back. I think Emitt can still play, don't take a injury plagued year out of context of a great year.

I think Emmitt definitely has gas left in the tank. It's a shame to see what coaches are doing to the No. 1 back these days. I can't stand this backfield-by-committee. If Emmitt gets 15-25 carries per game, he can easily have 1300+ yd season. especially with Arizona's line. And in Philly, Correll Buckhalter has the makings to be a 1700 yard running back... but when you only get your carries every other game, you can't accomplish that.

yes shockey can play and is one of the better tight ends in the game but he's way overrated. he's only been in the league for 2 season's so he can definitely improve but the media portray's him like he's as lethal as jerry rice once was.

emmitt has been washed up for atleast 3 year's. he isn't near the back he once was. hence that he's washed up. you know he isn't getting any younger either. if he's been average at best for the last 3 or 4 year's the best he can do now is maintain being average. being average isn't nothing to write home about. eddie george is another one of the washed up back's but every single year at the beginning of the season all the announcers and shit proclaim the old eddie george is back. meanwhile the fella has average closer to 3 yards a carry the last 3 season's.

ESPN.COM BREAKING NEWS
Is he another Robert Smith? Is he bothered by persistent drug rumors? Whatever the reason, Dolphins star running back Ricky Williams, 27, has told the team he is retiring after just five NFL seasons, ESPN's Dan Le Batard reports.
Hahahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah ahahahahahahahaha.
Too bad he didn't do this a week ago so that the Dolphins might have had a shot at Eddie George.

Now, they're completely be-fucked.
Looks like New Orleans made the right move in getting rid of Ricky. Deuce McCallister is a stud.

Emmitt Smith is washed up. He was 4 years ago.

I can't wait to see Daniel Snyder's Redskins fail again this year. Keep throwing that money around Dan.
Although I like Joe Gibbs, I don't think he has a chance this year.

what's interesting about the practice squad?
Shipp is the better back in Arizona, and I give Emmitt three weeks at most before the change is made for good. Emmitt was always my favorite player growing up, but it's time to hang it up. He hits the hole about as hard as Steven Hawking now. Start Shipp.
While we're on the topic of running backs, I wouldn't mind seeing my Colts trade Edgerrin James to Miami. I have no doubt Edgerrin would be receptive to it, and the Fins should be jumping at the chance to not have to start Travis Minor. Maybe they could get Ogunleye out of it somehow...we could use another pass-rushing end, since the last one we signed FAILED HIS FUCKING PHYSICAL.
I don't think you trade away a premier running back like James if you're in the position the Colts are in -- contending for a Super Bowl. Sure you might get Ogunleye, but does he get 15 1/2 sacks without a Jason Taylor and a Zach Thomas for the offense to worry about?

Edge is still a top-tier back, absolutely, but he's not who he was in 1999. With the Colts o-line, I think Dominic Rhodes could start and have another 1K-yard rushing year. We're not like Denver, but all of our backups have had success in James's absence. I love James to death, but the fact of the matter is that he's on the downside of his career. Regardless of all of that, we're not going to be able to keep James AND Marvin Harrison next year. I think the clear decision there is Harrison. Why not trade James now for high draft picks or defensive playmakers instead of losing him for virtually nothing next year?

Re: Ogunleye...he'd get his sacks. You couldn't double team both him AND Dwight Freeney. I think one of the most glaring holes on the Indy D (besides right up the gut) is the complete lack of pressure from the side of the ball opposite Freeney. Raheem Brock? Please. The guy jumps over somebody, the crowd oohs-and-ahs, but he doesn't produce. I think there's a reason why the Eagles waived him a couple years ago. Brad Scioli? Highly doubtful. He hardly even played last season, and has never shown much burst off of the ball. The Colts desperately need a bookend to Dwight the Fright and I think we're in a unique position now to make it happen. Ogunleye is an IU guy...James is a Cane. It's too perfect.
yeah man o-gun could get 10 sacks no sweat with the colts. freeney is one of the scariest and possibly the fastest end in the league. if they can't sign james plus harrison next year what makes you think they could sign o-gun and harrison? james isnt half the player he used to be anyways. he's still a good back but before he blew out his knee himself and faulk were the 2 best in the game with no arguments. now he's around the 10th. maybe he can bounce back big time this season though. i guess we'll see.

Do you know how many Lesner jerseys they are going to sell here in Minnesota? Wow! It'll probably set a record for most jerseys sold for a practice squad player.

Good point on resigning James Paso I think that has me sold. Dungy should pull the trigger.

Here's a great write-up on the Packers:

ESPN

I'm very excited for this year, but I'm still hurting from that bullshit 4th and 26 that ended our season. However, being a Red Sox fan, I should be used to plays/games like that.
it's a sad sad day in raidernation. arguably the greatest raider of all time tim brown's playing day's as a raider are most likely over. al davis has told tim he want's tim to be the 4th reciever on the team. tim still feel's that he has the ability to still remain their go to guy. he's gonna talk to al again tomorrow and most likely will ask to be released. the raiders would prefer him to retire then this so that he could have played his entire career as a raider. tim still want's to play football so look for him to join raiders east tampa shortly especially with mccardell holding out and jurevicious out with an injury. who better then the guy who did all the motion's in gruden's system for all those year's? this is total bullshit seeing how he's basically an equal to rice. rice had better number's last season because their garbage backup qb's would only throw the fucking ball to rice because well he's jerry rice. jerry would only catch a fraction of these ball's. it should be jerry going seeing how he isn't truely a raider. al davis is one of the most loyal owner's out there and he has made the wrong choice.

Y'know, the Eagles would've been better off just losing that game.
That is sad Paso. Tim Brown is one of the finest wideouts i've ever seen. The man grabs almost everything you throw his way. I hope the best for him. Truly a class act.
Wow, I love Bill Parcell's. Monday night he tells ESPN's Monday Night Countdown that Quincy Carter is probably the favorite for the starting QB job, Wednesday morning he cuts him.
hahaha...he failed a drug test...that makes him a repeat offender...that means...you are cut.

We all knew Quincy was expendable, but I didn't think he was THAT expendable. Looks like Vinny is gonna get another shot at glory. I wouldn't be surprised if Drew Henson takes over late in the season if the Boys dont have a playoff shot...and being in a division with Philly and the Skins...I think that is a real possibility.
Yep yep Quincy you're a chump. The Cowboys took you with a high pick to begin with gave you Aikman's former throne and you were the no.1 QB on America's (supposedly) team. Have a nice vacation with Ricky Williams douchebag.
So, who do you think is going to start at running back for the Broncos?

And who should?
griffin will i think. bell had a setback breaking his finger and i think hearst is there just as insurance. it may be more of a committee though. how long could griffin carry the ball 20 time's a game for? i think it may be something like griffin gets a dozen or so carries with hearst and bell getting 7 or 8 a game. as the year wind's down bell will probably get more carries though if he can be successful. anderson will most likely get cut and possibly sign with the dolphins.
Yeah Griffin will get the majority of the bulk. Any problems and Garrison " Robocop " Hearst will be put in pronto.
johnny what it up with you putting some nickname is quatation marks between a shit load of player's first and last name? you alway's do it especially in the nba thread.
Just something I do is all.
Has anyone picked up Tim Brown yet?

Maybe Philly should. They could always use another receiver and who knows how T.O. is going to act.
Word is the Broncos and the Bucs are the front-runners for Brown, but Brown had some unkind things to say about Gruden when he bailed out of Oakland two years ago, so I don't think Tampa is all that likely.
The Dolphins couldn't be any more done than if they swam into a Japanese fishing net:

HOUSTON -- In the latest catastrophe for the star-crossed Miami Dolphins, the team said late Friday night that wide receiver David Boston will miss the entire 2004 season after he suffered a knee injury earlier in the day during a practice with the Houston Texans.
*chuckles* Ricky sure knows when to take his chips and walk away from the table. They were going to need a huge year from Boston as it was. Yikes poor Wandstedt the guy just can't seem to catch a break.
I think this will officially be Dave Wannstedt's last year coaching the miami dolphins. These unfortunate personnel issues will be what forces him out. Although he had no control over these retirements and injuries, it is just not going to end well this season for the dolphins and wannstedt is going to be the first major change (of many I hope, because this team sure as hell needs a lot of them).

tampa is very likely. bruce allen has already said he's gonna call him and gruden said they're alway's interested in veteran's. it's not like tim hate's gruden. he basically felt gruden bailed out on the raiders. in the nfl today little grudges are overcome so easily. i can't see why tim woudn't want to go back to the system he basically ran. joey gallaway certainly can't do all those motion's gruden run's. he's already stated he's finding the system difficult to learn and mccardall is being a moron holding out. unless clayton can contribute right this second the bucs should get timmy before someone else like the dolphins grab him away.
hell " pace picante " paso is right. Brown just felt betrayed the way Gruden bailed on them. He didn't hold a grudge though. I think Tim is looking to start somewhere and i'm not sure he'll do that in Tampa then again i'm not sure he'll be starting for anyone other than the Texans though. The man has skills no doubt about that.
and poor marcel shipp will be out with a broken leg for 8-12 weeks. yipes! it looks like emmit smith will be the starter after all. it doens't look good for the cards. (well, it usually never does, but you know what i mean)

Arizona will be carried to 8-8 by McCown and a surprise defense. But wow, Denny Green sure is stuck with Emmitt now. Watch for AZ to resort to split time backfield as early as week 3.
been hearing that baltimore could be interested in timmy. that could be a good place for him to go to if he wants to play on a contender and actually play a lot. their best reciever is kj which isn't actually much.
I'm suprised that Miami doesn't go after Tim Brown after David Boston is out of the year.
timmy brown has joined the tampa bay bucs aka raiders east. nice place for him to go. he'll be able to help that team out. i say the reason why miami weren't interested in him is because timmy always played shit against them. surtain and madison played man to man coverage up close to the line of scrimmage and both brown and rice did fuck all. they couldn't separate from them.
I don't know how much I like how the Bucs are becoming 'The Raiders East'. I was one that was really hoping they'd land Duce Staley instead of Charlie Garner.

I'm hoping the O line gels fairly quickly, but even if they do, there's a lot of age on that line and I'm sure most of the starters will miss at least a game or two due to injury.

It'll be an interesting season, one I think they can crack into the playoffs in, but I dunno if they'll have the gas to keep it going.
