Everyone was ready to crown the new king at the U.S. Open.

What they got was a familiar finish.

First came Phil Mickelson, sending the New York gallery into hysteria with an improbable charge, only to muff a chance to win his second major with a three-putt from 5 feet to make double bogey on the 71st hole.

Now that's the Mickelson I know, where've you been buddy?

Mickleson played great despite one of the worst golf courses. Just about every player said it was an unfair course. Some of the best players in the world shot 80+ Sunday. Phil kept his score down when it could have balooned. Shitty Open.

Gooooooooosssssseeeeeee

That course has the fastest greens I've ever seen.

Definately a chipping and putting course.

I watched all of Saturday and Sunday. I honestly don't know what kept me from not changing the channel. I was never much of a "watch golf on TV" type of guy, but I'm afraid I am now.

I'd never go watch it in person, though.

I think it was one of the most enjoyable Open's I have ever watched. I love watching these pro's look human, even if it was on the cheap side. Imagine what the course would have been like if they actually made the primary rough (not the very high grass) a bit tougher?

I know that it must have been brutal to play that course, but it sure was fun watching everyone roll off the green on 7, 11, and others. Just a really fun Open.

I think it really depends on the fan. If you're a golfer, seeing the pros put up scores in the 80's once a year might be a treat. For the casual fan, if Mickelson didn't show up, the Open would have taken a beating in the ratings.

One of the problems with the PGA tour is that they do not market any of their best players, and let other sponsers do it. People know Phil and Tiger, maybe even Sergio, but did people know that Goosen was ranked 9 in the World before the tourney? Paired with Els who is #2? This is one of the best players in the game, and he is probably unknown to the casual fan. Vijay Singh people probably know, but David Toms? Jeff Maggert?

The PGA game has come to depend on Tiger, and it worked when he was in it every Sunday for a few years straight. Now, with Tiger out of the hunt the last two years, viewers see a guy like Goosen, who is a pretty amazing player, and think he is some nobody.

The PGA had Goosen and Els in the final group, with Mickelson, Funk, Maruyama and others right behind. The best players were on in it on the final day (minus Tiger), and I doubt they did very good ratings.
