Great review. I honestly think it's up there as one of the great pieces of American satire in any form.

I think you make a good point about Brooks. Since I grew up with Saddles & History of the World (The Inquisition is five of my favorite minutes in film), he's always been a genius in my eyes. I hope there's not a bunch of kids not willing to check out his early work because of Dracula & his other latest works.

Yes, thanks for stressing Brooks' earlier brilliance in the review. Guy was really changing the face of comedy at his peak.

I may be in the minority in thinking that Brooks just didn't get any better than Young Frankenstein. Blazing Saddles is courageous and a brilliant satire, but for my money Young Frankenstein sells its premise on another level.

Great review. And way to let our younger Chewers know that this is an important work that needs to be seen. Bravo to that.

By the way...is this one of those DVDs that you didn't get a free copy of but felt the need to review it anyway?

Young Frank is a masterpiece, but not as aggressively comedic as Blazing. It's a better film for sure.

As for the disc, Rob. It was sent for review.

Great review, Nick. This film holds a special place in my heart, right next to lungs. Is it worth picking up if one has the previous inarnation? I find it hard to justify a double dip if the features are anything short of spectacular. The little email at the end set my feet a tappin'. Well written, sir. And, as much as I am loathe to admit it, I love Robin hood. I know it's not even close to his best, but I'll love it 'til the day I die.

Excellent review. Liked the caps, too.

Yes!
I remember my cousins taping it (it was on after my bed time) and we were really excited about watching this really adult, dirty film that our parents wouldn't let us see. I think i missed most of the racial politics but i got that the townsfolk were idiots and the sheriff was cool. Is the fact that a kid can 'get it' a good thing or a bad thing though. is the film-making universal or just over-simplistic? hmmm.
I never found the farting scene funny, though. i just thought it was a bit dumb. and i was eight. i guess i was an uptight child.
It is wierd though to think there are kids getting really excited about dangerous and adult films like 'there's something about mary' or 'american pie'.
This has brought up lots of memories of films that were really important, almost totemic, when i was a child. having invested so much kiddie-imagination into them it can be deeply strange watching them as an (objective?) adult. This is especially true of films that you've kind of forgotten about for a decade or so. Hey, this could be a new thread!
I guess, for people 25-35 or thereabouts, the ultiamte example of this will always be Star Wars.
Blazing Saddles is great. yay!

Well, Nick, I am one of the seven people who has never seen Blazing Saddles . All I know about it is the black sheriff and the "campfire" scene. But I always occasionally hear about this movie.

Your review did interest me, however. It's early Mel Brooks, so I'm sure it doesn't suck. If the race stuff is actually funny and not overbearing, I'll give it a try.

This film really is a classic. I've encountered too many people who think the American Pie movies (and the waves of similar films that followed) are hilarious but think Blazing Saddles is boring and unfunny. It's ludicrous. Great review.

Great review!! The captions for the pics had my laughing my ass off!!! My top three Mel Brooks films would be Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein (Close second), and History of the World Part 1. High Anxiety and Spaceballs would make the top five.

I can't wait for this Special Edition, it sounds much better than the first DVD release of this classic film. I also remember watching this with my father when I was young. It was on TV, and we recorded it on our BETA machine!! I watched that tape so many times.

This is by far, the best comedy film in my opinion and if anyone here hasn't seen or purchased this DVD then you have to! I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

I just had to say this, by the way:

Bart: I better go check out this Mongo character.
[Bart reaches for his gun]

Jim: Oh no, don't do that.

Bart: Why not?

Jim: If you shoot him, you'll just make him mad.

"I figured I'd just chill out here until Ash and Bobbie Joe got back."

Classic.

Great Review for a Classic Movie....Sadly I'll have to wait for my next payday to pick it up for myself.

Nick Johnson is Right, it is a great movie.

I was amazed when I was in Fry's Electroincs and this was playing in their video area. I don't know if the kids these days will enjoy it as much, but this is a must watch for me if I see it on cable.

When it first came out some friends of my parents told them to see it. Their only description was that it was a Western. They were quite shocked when the movie started.

I found an archived copy of the review using archive.org's wayback machine.

Hope that helps.
