CHUD AFI List

Thread Starter
Well, I just saw the results of the latest AFI list, and as always I was let down by the random choices of a bunch of seventy and eighty year olds.

Hence, I propose a CHUD style AFI list.

I want to know what the Chewers consider to be the top 100 American films of all time.

Anything is acceptable from Thomas Edison's Frankenstein to the latest celluloid abomination to spring from Uwe Boll's loins.

How it works:

Private Message or e-mail your Top 100 list to me between right now and July 1st at 11:59 p.m.

I will compile the results and list them in sections of ten starting on July 2nd and ending on July 4th.

I hope this works out and I would like to see a lot of people send in their selections.

Reply below if you want to partake in said list.

This sounds really cool. I'm in. Gimme a couple of days.
Sounds neat. One question: do we need to simply list 100 movies in our PM or do they have to be ranked by us for voting sake?
You should throw in a rule that the film has to be at least five years old.
I agree with the five year rule, say anything later than 1999 is inelligible.

I also think we should post our personal lists after Anderson compiles them so we can all mock each other's choices (like me, my list really sucks).
I'll give this a shot, but I'm not promising anything.

~grumbles about "American" films~

what does that mean?

filmed in, filmed about or what?

Just as with the AFI, "American" means film that were originally released in the American market then released elsewhere.

Raiders of the Lost Ark - An American release that was filmed in England, Tunisia and America.

Life is Beautiful - An Italian release filmed in and around Northern Italy.

I might be up for including international releases on a "Sight and Sound" style list later for comparison to the American list. But, that's probably a little while off.

For now, just American flicks.

I'm kind of against the five year rule, because I think that our choices will probably cancel out anything from the 2000s.

After I post the compiled 100 list, everyone is free to list their Top 100. I'll probably have mine up by the 5th.

Everyone's list should be ranked by personal importance.
I suggested the Five Year rule because it makes the participants think harder about what's been released in the past and also, movies age much like wine: the best have age on their side. You wouldn't select Wild Irish Rose for a choice wine; that would be like picking Donnie Darko as one of the Best 100 movies ever made.

I won't be participating because a Top 100 list would pain me and plus I'm not ready. A Top 20 would be doable. Should be interesting!

I just got my e-mail back around 7 from the friendly folks at the AFI.

Using their scoring system for their Top 100 lists, I can encorporate lower amounts of 20, 25, 50 and 75 if that is all that you think you can contribute.

Now, this doesn't mean that everyone should submit shorter lists. It's just that if you're panicking and you can't fill out the total 100 round up or down to one of those magic four numbers.

Try for 100, but don't panic and include Showdown in Little Tokyo if you can't think of a number 89.

Try and create a well thought out list and submit it. Your efforts will be appreciated.

Cool. I was thinking about including short explanatory blurbs about each film on my list fabfunk-style, which would've involved absurd amounts of work for a humble message board post, but I can back-burner that until other people post their lists.

I'll have you know that Showdown was my number 17, you highflown sonova...

By the way, I recommend looking at the AFI list if you think you're getting stuck, because-at least in my case-it inspires cries of "Aw, bullshit! I can think of five movies better than-" et voila.

Ok, I've got some of the first lists in.

I would appreciate if everyone who wants to participate would post saying that they wish to.

It makes it a lot easier for me to maintain a solid headcount of all who are involved.

Some of you have had questions about the scoring system, so here goes:

If you pick Gone with the Wind as your Number One flick.

That flick will then = 1 vote, but 100 points.

If Lawrence of Arabia is your number two...

That flick with = 1 vote, but 99 points.

It's a list of descending order, where points are assigned based by the weight implied by your list.

Lower ranked flicks = fewer points.

The votes matter when we start having stuff like The Godfather, Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark which have been picked more than once.

If five people vote Star Wars and three vote Godfather II, Star Wars will rank higher.

Towards the end, when things start to tie...the points will decide placement on the final list.

*More information to come*

I'll do it and I'm going to do a 5 year rule just because While I love Movies like City of God and think it's a great film time is needed to see if it holds up. So anything released jan1 2000 won't be eligble for me.
I'm in. But give me time.
getting 100 was surprisingly easy.. using the AFI list was very helpful. I just copy/pasted it and deleted what I haven't seen, what I didn't like, and switched everything around... and then added my personal favorites, which ended up being 70-80 of the picks. oh, and having my dvds ranked on guzzlefish was helpful as well.

I don't like the 5 year rule... but I'll compromise. give them an asterik if they make the final list.

The list so far is pretty interesting. There are a lot of films on here, that I'm surprised to see.

Can't wait to see what the rest of you all have to pick.

You all wouldn't be believe this Top 10.

It's fairly normal, but there are two flicks in the Top Five, that I truly didn't see getting this high.

It's cool, though.
I sent my list in. Hope you got it.

I did pre 2000. Sounds like the lists will be very different. can't wait to see it.

Very easy to get to 100. Left a bunch off too. So how many lists you get so far??
Sent.
That was very fun and interesting. It really made me think about what makes me value one film more than another. And it reminded me of a lot I ought to buy!
I did pre 2000, too, but a number of films from '99 made the list. It was a good year.

Roughly 17 lists so far. I just added in Anya's last night.

A lot of people aren't posting in the thread to let me know that they're in. Got to do that, so I can get a headcount.
I think anyone that's finding this an easy list to compile is nuts. Then again, maybe I'm nuts. I keep redoing this list and keep doubting a lot of choices. I've changed it several times and putting it in order is like pulling teeth. No matter what, I'll have controversial choices on it. I don't think leaving out any genre is acceptable and just because an action film or a horror film isn't Citiizen Kane, doesn't mean it should be left off if it's the best of it's genre. Afterall, a lot of people feel Birth of a Nation should be included just for technical merits. Anyway, my list will be done last minute and quite a few choices will get razzed. I'll stick by them all, though.
Everyone should save a copy of their list and post them.

I just didn't think it was that hard to make the list. The top 30 a moved a few around. 31-60 had the most changes but 61+ I didn't think about it too much. wheter it was 78 and I thought it could be 75 or 71 didn't really matter.
Count me in. I'll do my best.
I'm in.

Will PM you my list today or tomorrow...

I'll throw a list in as well. Coming up with 100 was relatively easy. Ranking them is tougher.

It's coming together really well.

Remember, the deadline is this Thursday at 11:59 p.m.

I'll try to have 100-80 up by the end of Friday.

I'm starting to fall a little behind on the list, but don't worry...I have been receiving everyone's list so far.

Continue to post in here, if you want to join.
Deadline = Thursday by 11:59 p.m.

A bump to all to say get your lists in.

Any hints? will people be shocked at the top 10?
I don't know about you guys, but I've remembered several excellent films since I made my list, and am now kicking myself.
I'm dying to see how this turns out. Every time I see those AFI lists (or look at the IMDB top 250) I end up wondering how they ever came to be what they are. And this time I'll know.
I think that this is a very cool idea, Anderson. And whatever you're using to tally this up, it's a very respectable bit of work.

I'm in. My list is on the way shortly.

Today's update:

The Top Ten could be easy to call. What's surprising me is the list of films that are placing low on the lost or sometimes not at all.

There are two solid "geek" films that are placing at the bottom rung. For those of you who wanted the five year rule...there are only three post '99 films left on the master list.

And those three films are solidly respectable.

It's not like they're Torque, Connie & Carla and You Got Served.

I've finally caught up on my backlog, so the List is ready for its final entries. When I list the movies I'm going to start an official CHUD AFI List thread. If you want to comment on the films, send me PMs with brief comments for the films that you believe are on the list.

That way, if they're on the list and I post them...I will work your comments into the post. Kind of like on the AFI Specials when they interview the different celebs to talk about the picks.

By the way, does anyone know where I can get some reasonable sized jpegs of movie posters? I was going to use them for visual reference or possibly a scene grab from each of the movies. I figure that a movie poster jpeg would be a lot easier to do.

Thanks to all who have participated. I can't wait to show you all the compiled list.

P.S.

After the final List is posted, I'll open the personal list thread for you all to post in. That should be around this Sunday or Monday.

I'd guess the LOTR movies but if only 2 "geek" movies made it I'm not sure what the other would be.

Sent my list. I'll probably get tore a new one for some of the choices.

Today's update:

A little under five hours left in the creation of the list. We've finally got a clear number one. The list will be surprising and a little predictable.

I'm going to try and post 100-90 by 8 am EST tomorrow.

I'll slowly but steadily post the others up until Sunday night.
I've got a few movie blurbs in so far, and they work well.

Oh well...

T-Minus Four Hours and 32 Minutes until the List begins.
Sent my list out. I can't wait to see some of these. Don't worry, Supersucker. I think everyone is going to catch soem shit for their choices.
