Why the Silent Hill 4 The Room Original Soundtrack is better than you...

Well.....this soundtrack is the big one I have been waiting for since the game was announced earlier this year. Finally the soundtrack came out last week in Japan and I got my copy earlier today. Let me just tell you this is first greatly hyped game ost to come out and actually not disappoint in a long, long, long time. Ok now to the actual music..

First things first...this soundtrack has the best vocal songs ever from a game. Akira Yamaoka like with Silent Hill 3 uses his unique rock sound with the great voices of returning vocalist Mary Elizabeth McGlynn and Joe Romersa from SH3. Only this time Akira seems like he took what he did in SH3 and did what Bungie says they are doing to Halo 2....let me quote filling in SH4 for Halo 2, "The Silent Hill 4 OST is alot like Silent Hill 3 OST only it's Silent Hill 3 OST on fire, going 130 miles per hour through a hospital zone, being chased by helicopters and ninjas ... And, the ninjas are all on fire, too." It is really hard to describe the soundtrack in words, especially the vocal songs. If you are a fan of the series, this soundtrack should be familar to you, just with a lot more polish but on the vocal songs this time around. My favorite song on the soundtrack is called "Your Rain" sung by Mary Elizabeth McGlynn. This song took me completely by suprise because when I originally heard the sample on the Konami website it did nothing for me, but then on the actual cd the full song just blew me the fuck away. The website plays the quiet and peaceful part, but the song has a shit load of power in the parts they don't play. Mary's voice gets angry at parts, and then at the end there is a 30 sec guitar and drum solo that is just godly and could easily have been made into its own 4 min loop . Also the vocal songs "Cradel of Forest", "Your Rain", and "I'm Waiting Here For You" with the ladder being a sorta tribute to the SH2 story line, anyway those three vocal songs have the awesome Silent Hill main theme hidden in the guitar riffs at some points in the songs, very nice additions. Again I must say this has to be heard to be believed. I'm still in awe of how good this soundtrack turned out to be even after the already awesome samples. The Limited Edition soundtrack I have also came with a second disc of horror stories told by a famous author from Japan. Good stuff there as well even though I don't understand what he is saying. Sadly though, the soundtrack is only sold through Konami's official Japan website which doesn't ship outside of Japan, so ebay might be the best option for someone looking to buy the soundtrack, or you can pray that Konami has one bundled with the US version of the game like with SH3.
Edit: Forgot to mention how awesome the song "Room of Angel" sung by Mary again. It was played in the original SH4 trailer. The song is just eerie and the chorus will send chills through your body.

Samples can be found here, scroll down some.

it will be put in a folder called 6-22-04 with the OST folder inside that one.
Another Edit: seems our torrent for the soundtrack was posted to a well known BitTorrent site so their are a ton on people on it right now, so if you connect to the torrent, just be patient

I need to score the soundtrack - I picked up Silent HIll 4 last Sat and have enjoyed the game - though I am only 5 hours in ( I am really slow, so this may last me 15 hours playing time). It is different - both in terms of story, but more so in the game features.

The soundtrack is awsome - I have to say that Room of Angel just blows me away every time I hear it.

Does anyone (with the mini disk) speak Japanese? What is the story on the disk that comes with SIlent Hill 4 about? At ten minutes, I am very, very curious.

Yeah a shame the story telling on taht mini disc is in Japanese, even worse is on the LE version of the soundtrack the second disc that comes with that is 53 mins of that story telling. Even though it will never happen, but for the US release it would be nice for the stories to be done in english using Joe Romersa's voice, he is perfect for that scary stories.

As to the game, I am about 5 hours in (or 2.5 for a normal gamer as I go nice and slow) and I love it. The premise is nice and simple and when the game starts, you are have awoken from a nightmare to find that you are, indeed, stuck in your apt room, and thus your adventure begins.

The controls and inventory are totally different. This time I recommend everyone leaving the noise filter on, as it works great - the previous games it was kinda cool at first, then just grain....not here. The inventory is all on screen, so unless you just pause the game, you are much more immersed within this Silent Hill adventure.

Graphics are fantastic.....minor spoilers -

ok: you do not have a flashlight or a radio that you carry this time, and the scary elements are more based on what will hunt and chase you down, than based on what can scare you (because it's dark), so Konami is going for something different with the horror features.

On the Silent HIll sites, this game is getting some mixed comments from some, but I am convinced most of this is just due to the fact that Konami mixed the game's play features this round, which for my money, is a good thing. Who wants the same 'ol everytime?

Slight Spoilers as to what the game is kinda about.....

This is, so far into the game, a murder mystery type deal. People are dying left and right, and the killer has some connection to your character, Henry. Now, as stated earlier, I am still real early in the game, but, I am digging this - much more character based story than Silent Hill 3.

When I finish, I'll give more thoughts, but for fans of Silent Hill - and, I hate to say this, Resident Evil too (due to changes in game style)- this newest Silent Hill game has something for everybody.

PS, this Silent Hill has the scariest monster in the series for me: the two headed baby/thing victim.

Thanks for the info, VThunder. I've only played Silent Hill 2 on the Xbox. A couple of friends and I got drunk and watched me beat it - very creepy Can't wait to play this one.

Ok, just finished this one is about 14 hours (8 - 9 for normal gamers, but I go real slow, as to enjoy myself). I give the game an solid B. I will try to be mild and vague as to plot points for those that do not want to be spoiled, as I did not.

Highlights:

1) interesting, if at times, slightly underdeveloped characters (mainly your own, who is a virtual mute at times), but the mystery of the game is to get the hell out of your room, and oh, to discover who is killing everyone in your path. Hint: the person/creature/thing is known in the Silent Hill universe quite well to the hardcore fans, so the tie in in there, but, this is not a sequel as Silent HIll 3 was, not even close. This is an all new adventure, and no area we explore is from a past game, including Silent Hill.

2) Monsters, including the variety of ghosts, there are about 20....WOW! The biggest variety ever in a Silent Hill game! There is a cast of about 8-9 humans, some seen a little, some more, but except for your neighbor, Eileen (the main person beside you, and the murderer), they are caught up in your journey, and are more doing there own thing, than anything.....you'll see.

3) Game play changes. Well, this is the first major change in gameplay for the series, and some changes are great, some are 'ehh.' As to the what works (IMO), the menu for objects and weapons is all onscreen, so if a ghost hunts you down, you gotta run like hell and get enough distance to change weapons, unless you get good at the controls, which is possible - the menu is limited to 10 spaces, so a cabinet at home acts as a storage for extras. The one thing I did not like was the lack of a 2d or 3d option for the controls - I was always used to 2d, but that is gone, so there is more Resident Evil like in controls.

4) Areas - (mild spoilers here): You get about 6 main, very detailed areas that you visit twice in the game, but the second time is not identical to the first, so I had no issue at all with this.

5) graphics: still about the best the PS2 can do - if you have seen Silent HIll 3, this is the same high quality - Are there major improvements to that? Not really, though this game has way, way more monsters than that, so it is very busy. There is still dynamic lighting, but not as much as Silent Hill 2, or 3 since you have no flashlight this time (or radio, except for one at home). ONE ISSUE: clipping. I have no idea if it is there because we have ghosts that go through walls, but I hate seeing part of a monster's head, or your axe pass through a closed door a bit - not that big of a deal, but it bugged (just a little).

6) Riddles - gone, except for mission based types.

7) Suggestions to remember: there are three modes: easy, normal and hard. I played my first time on normal, and with a few exceptions found in easy. Playing on hard is crazy hard - way, way more challenging.

8) Extras, unlockable weapons and costumes are there, as well as extra radio (in your room) messages, and inside jokes.

9) Bosses: (I'll be vague) Silent Hill 3 had two, a purple worm, and the last female god creature, well, using that rationale, you get two in Silent Hill 4 (this is open to what you consider a boss) - on normal, they were way easy, but playing on hard, the dog monsters will own you, so, if you want challenge, Hard mode is for you. You will be owned....I guarantee it!

Bottom line: if you like Silent Hill 2, you should very much enjoy this - it does not have the same emotional journey as that, since this is not a carbon copy plot, but it is a subtle story, that does develop as you play deeper and deeper into the story. Some who may be concerned that this is a Resident Evil deathmatch with no plot be reassured, this is a Silent Hill game, even with what may seem like more action oriented changes to gameplay.

Silent Hill 4 is based on fear caused from what is hunting you (and can do nothing to truly stop it), so gameplay is based to support that. This is not a guns-blazn'-shoot-first-ask-questions later type game, though this is the most action based gameplay ever seen in a Silent Hill game.

the soundtrack to Silent Hill 2 is my favourite video game soundtrack ever, and one of my favourite plain ol' music cds.. looks like im definetly going to have to check out the OST for the 4th Hill if its half as good as you say

Thanks for the soundtrack Ryo. I've wanted that song from the first trailer ever since I first saw it earlier this year. I really can't wait for this game, it looks like it could be the best yet.
Ooooh, thanks for the heads up! I need this soundtrack more than I need air methinks...this bitorrent thingy better work, the soundtrack is going for $40 on eBay...

Are there any alternatives to the Bit Torrent link? My university firewall is a big bitch that fucks with BT and Kazaa Lite. All I really want is 'Room Of Angel' (that's the one in the trailers with the woman singing, right?).

I'm not too happy with the vocals in the Silent Hill songs. The first game had this really great industrial ambience which kind of blended background noise into a rhythm which just oozed atmosphere. As the games have went on it's becoming more and more of just like a few ambient tracks, then some J-rock Evanesence sounding stuff with incomprehensible lyrics.

Still, Silent Hill 4 sounds like it kicks 3's ass which is good.

Well it's not hard, 3 was terrible, no suspense at all.
