Sierra is No More

This is kind of sad...The Sierra games were always my favorites when I was a kid, especially the "Space Quest" series, in which janitor, er, sanitation engineer, Roger Wilco attempts to save the galaxy. Those old-school games were a lot of fun, and I learned to type playing them (remember how you used to have to type in all the commands? "look house"...."talk alien"....).

The "King's Quest" series was also cool, although it got kind of tiresome. Arguably the best of those games, though, was "Gold Rush." It wasn't as well known, but hard (and fun) as hell. Did anyone ever play it?

Very sad indeed. In addition to King's Quest and Space Quest, I also played many of the Leisure Suit Larry games and the Quest for Glory games. In fact King's Quest was one of the very first PC games I ever played (I think somewhere I still have the old 5.0 disks for KQ II). RIP Sierra.

Yeah, the original Space Quest was the first PC game I ever had, and I used to spend hours on my old Apple IIgs trying to solve the puzzles. It took me about a month to figure out "put rock in geyser!"

And I have fond memories of me and a friend trying to sneak in "Leisure Suit Larry" playing time when his parents were out of the house.

So many classic names from the "good old days" have been swallowed up, turned into brand names for generic product and then dumped.

Maybe I've been too close to it for over a decade now, but even though there are still plenty of games to like, I'm so sick of the industry itself. No charm, no character.

I can't even begin to speculate how many times I played through So You Want To Be A Hero? (QG1) Police Quest 1 & 2 also kept me up way to late on many a scool night. Also count me in with the I'm pretty sure KG1 was the first computer game I played. I think. Maybe. Unless the TI cartidge games count, then maybe not.

I'd forgotten about Police Quest...damn those were good! I used to like screwing the chick you pulled over in the red sports car, then getting busted because she turns out to be the chief's wife! Drinking in uniform was always a bad move, as was taking your gun into the jail (the prisoners would grab it and kill you). Ahhhh...so many memories...

Wow. Most of my childhood was spent playing Sierra adventure games. King's Quest IV was the first computer game I ever had. That damn game taught me how to type. When friends would come over, I would show them all of the horribly gruesome ways one could be killed in Space Quest III and The Colonel's Bequest.

I know that I still have my character saved on disk from QG2 Trial by Fire. That game rocked my world my first year in college.

Here's a website to all the good vintage Sierra games.

The Sierra/Dynamix houses produced some of my all-time favorite games. You always knew when that little mountain logo and familiar tune played at the beginning of a game that you were in for a quality experience.

Thats what they get for cancelling the awesome (from the demo I saw at E3 4 years ago) Babylon 5:Into the fire!

Damn what a bummer. Kings Quest 5 was the first Sierra game I got. Had so much fun with that and 6.

Also the numerous times I played Quest for Glory 3 and 4. Shadows of Darkness was a fucking blast.

Not to mention
Ecoquest 1 and 2

The lode runner remake was pretty good also.

Robin Hood: Conquests of the Longbow

Underrated gem.

Can't say I'm surprised. Sierra has been sucking for quite some time now.

The writing was on the wall with the way the seriously screwed with the developers of the B5 flight sim...they moved them to California, and then canceled the game after everyone got there.

I used to love the sierra adventure games. I had most of them. Space Quest, Quest for Glory and Gabriel Knight were my favorite series. Gold Rush was a great game too. As were both of the conquest games, camelot and longbow.

I miss old school adventure games.

Was it Sierra that made the bloody fighting game, "Time Killers"?

I loved that game as a kid! I think it flopped hard, but you could decapitate an opponent right off the bat! I'm getting bloodthirsty just thinking about it

I think I will always have a Sierra folder in my hard drive for the simple fact that they release Betrayal at Krondor. That game has been on every computer I have ever owned, starting with the 386 I put together with a friend in High School.

Looks like it's time to fire up another BAK session and see how pumped up I can get my guys after reading "Thiful's Bird Migrations" a few hundred times.

Thanks Sierra, you'll be missed (you too Black Isle.)
