High Quality TV suggestions for a new XBOX owner

Sup guys. I am in the market for a new TV. I just got an xbox, and I plan on getting the cables to get a 480p signal onto this said new tv.

Do Xbox games support a 720p picture?

Anyway, I know all too well that people at all electronic stores just spout what is on the manufacturer's paperwork and really no nothing about what they are selling e.g. many of sony's "HDTV monitors" downgrade all their signals to 480p and dont even display 720p signals.

Anyway, I was hoping my fellow Chewers out there, who i KNOW have some beautiful rigs could give me some suggestions for a high quality tv that will do all of these things for me: normal analog cable tv viewing, preferrably high quality DVD picture watching, and of course some serious gaming.

I would say the room I have would allow me to have something in the 30-40' screen size and as far as price, it would be nice if it was under 1000 dollars (wishful thinking im sure) but if it is more its gotta be a reasonable price for what I am spending

Hope you guys can help me out.

I like this one. I don't own it myself yet, but I've been eyeing it for a while, and I plan to get it by the end of the summer. My local Best Buy has that TV for a new regular price of $999.99. (used to be $1299.99, recently reduced) The one they have at BB looks different than the one in the link I provided, but the specs are the same. It would be perfect for gaming and watching DVDs. And they're HD ready, so if you ever decided to invest in digital cable or digital satellite TV, you'd be all set. Sony also sells a 36" version of it, but that one costs about $400 or so more.

If you are doing the HD route, I had a Phillips 30" format tv (in widescreen dimensions), and wow, Xbox glows in the dark - no joke, I almost got emotional first time I saw it - most games I played seemed to support that format in all its glory - only one had to be screen adjusted, and no biggie - here is a link to see it, and not a bad price!

It looks fantastic in HD - and yes, Xbox will support all the way to 1080I - the FANTASTIC (bad joke) Matrix game is an example of that resolution.

That Phillips is a nice TV, but I don't like widescreen TVs when it comes to watching reagular cable. I'd rather have the black bars along the top and bottom of the screen when I watch a movie than on the sides of the screen when I watch TV. But, I guess that could just be me.

I hate you all.

Pay the extra money for a nice TV. It's worth living off Ramen and Mac and Cheese if you've got a TV big enough to make God jealous.

You know that you can stretch the image for standard Cable broadcast.

My RCA pulls from the center out, so virtually no image quality is lost. But, I've got a Gamecube and a PS2...so I wouldn't know a thing about XBOXs.

Sorry.

I think I'll wait to buy a widescreen TV when all cable is presented in a WS format. Which, according to what I've been hearing, won't be too far off.

I've been putting off getting a hi-def tv, because I have a big-screen now and don't want to go with a smaller picture size, even if it is hi-def. I don't think I could afford a widescreen tv that's as big as my current projection tv.

Oh, here's a great site that lists what xbox games support which resolution. Virtually all of them support 480p, not so many 720 or 1080.

That sucks that the only good game on that list that supports anything better than 480p is Soul Calibur II. They've wasted some good resolutions on some not so great games.

If you are looking to get a big screen Rear Projection HDTV you cannot go wrong with Hitachi... especially their Ultravision series. I myself will be upgrading to the 65S500 next week... their full High-Def 65" beauty.

Mitsubishi and Sony make a good TV as well.... but they are not as consistent so you need to do proper research.

And, FYI... Hitachi makes most of the hi-tech components inside almost all HDTV's no matter what the brand.

Honestly, unless you have two TVs running different resolutions side-by-side, the differences between higher resolutions aren't that dramatic. The jump from 480i to 480p is jaw-dropping, but the jump from 480p to 720p will have you squinting at your TV saying things like, "Yeah, I *guess* it looks a little better...I guess..."

Don't get me wrong, I love games that offer higher resolutions. But it's not a deal-breaker. 480p is more than enough to make me happy.

I like it - if you want to enter the HD market, but do not want to spend crazy money, the set is great. If you need the biggest and best, some other suggestions here will blow mine away.

Check out this site: http://www.digiupdate.com/P001_Samsu...l#_Toc62901895

The guy who hosted this site was regarded as pretty knowledgable and even-handed (thought he really likes the Samys). Alas, he recently passed away from a bicycle accident. Nevertheless, the information on the site is still top notch.

ya the DLP would be ideal, but its 600 dollars more, and right now I dont think I can afford it, granted I can barely afford the Sony right now.

Re: High Quality TV suggestions for a new XBOX owner

I hear ya. Of course, I've always found the best advice is to make sure you audition the hardware before buying. Go to CC and check out the Sony. Make sure they've hooked up the components in the back and the signal isn't running through S-Video or composite (this actually happened to me a little while back). Ask to check out the Hitachi LCD, which, to me, seemed comprable to the Sony model you're looking at. It's a big purchase and the least they can do is let you test drive the product before you jump in. Do your research and make an informed decision, but in the end, remember that it's your decision that counts. Good luck.
