Master Control Program - CHUD's Video Game Column - Page 9

I'm whelmed. I've got my list of "Must Buy" and "Defer until used" titles, and it looks pretty beautiful. When Guitar Hero ends up on your wait list, you know it's going to be a pretty good season.

Rock Band 2 is definitely going on hold, if I get it at all. I can snag all those great albums next week, plus future content for RB1. I don't have a big group of people that come over and play Rock Band with me, so it's not like I'll be missing out on the social aspect.

Whereas Fallout 3 might change my life (as in make me a shut in) so I will buying it and skipping out of work early.

All Wii Music and no play makes Alex something something- http://chud.com/articles/articles/16291/

Best. Article. Title. Ever.

That dog-barking clip . . . My God. I own a Wii, and that shit left me slack-jawed.

I'm not too sure how much concern CHUD has over its continuing issues in regards to Internet Explorer (control over my workplace browser=I do not have, so please don't "Firefox" me), but I get giant white boxes instead of half the videos you posted.

Or, if you only posted four videos, then I'm getting four white boxes for no reason at all.

**You're right about Wii music, and the Wii, in general.

That really drives me nuts. Everytime I post a video I try to make sure it works well on every browser, because the backend seems to like messing everything up. Sorry I missed this one. Working now?

Works great now! White boxes are gone, the four videos are working fine.
Cool. Wish I'd fixed it sooner- a ton of gaming sites ran with the article.
Holy hell, does that look irritating. Based on the videos and there being no real structured song making, it's like digital pots n' pans for kids to bang on.

Moving on to something a little less aggravating, Alex, have you had a chance to get some play time with De Blob for the Wii? Early videos had me kinda excited (well, maybe curious) about this, but now it's looking like a Playskool version of My First Crackdown, but maybe that's not a bad thing.

C'mon, we all know that all Nintendo has to do is put out something halfway decent with Mario, Metroid, Zelda, or maybe Smash Brothers somewhere in the title, and the hordes of Nintendo faithful gamers will come rushing back.

I'm not normally the doomsaying type, but I'll say this: Nintendo Wii has probably seriously damaged the "hardcore gamer" market for the forseeable future, because I can all-but guarantee that Microsoft and Sony are looking at Wii's success and going "Huh...we should try to get a piece of that."

Expect X-Box 720 and Playstation 4 to cater a whole hell of a lot more to "casual players" than their previous offerings. Yeah, hardcore gamers are still a significant market, but when you can make more money going after the casual players, guess which audience is going to get the shaft?
Sorry Alex, but I may have to buy five copies of this...

to sell on eBay.

It's okay, I don't really like my family.

Microsoft's success disagrees with you. They're not making Nintendo money, but they're doing just fine in second place in the US, being a "hardcore" console, and they still cater just the perfect amount to the casual crowd through Live Arcade. Sony'll probably do the same next gen when they learn not to fuck up as early and often as they have.
I think there's a place in the market for all kinds of gaming. We've got both extremes, and people have plenty of choice.

Choice is good.

And this is why my kids will love this. Have no doubt the Wii is for the kids. I have a 360 for my games and the kids have their Wii.

And Alex, if you're gonna kill my family, you will have to start with Ryan.

Sure, they're doing fine. But it's that "second place" that's the sticking point. Microsoft doesn't want to be second place. They want to be the "winner." To do that at this point, they have to beat Nintendo at their own game. They want to make "Nintendo Money" not just "be content in second place." Particularly since it seems likely that Sony will learn from its' mistakes with PS3 and probably be a serious contender again in the next gen.

Sure, ideally they'll come up with something that attracts both casual and hardcore gamers in equal measure. But if the library for the next next-gen consoles gets flooded with casual gamer crapware (as Wii has), filtering through the mess to find the gems might end up more trouble than its' worth.

50 Cent shot down- http://chud.com/articles/articles/16386/

Sorry. I know you guys were really looking forward to it.
Alex Riviello, Unless you are a fan of 50 Cent, this game is not fitty enough for anyone else. I thought it made a lot of sense to cancel a game which might have made No Cents during the 2008 holiday season.
Wow.
While the premise is as silly as possible. The video looked decent. Just remove the rappers and change them with some group of Mercs and release the game anyways.
Kotaku updated the story, and it turns out it's most likely not cancelled. Yay.

Alex Riviello, It's too bad that Punisher: No Mercy is a PSN exclusive. While it is strange that The Punisher would team up with Silver Sable instead of Nick Fury (the titanic team up of Capcom's Punisher arcade game of 1991), it would be great if the game is a hit so that there could be an XBox 360 edition. I also wouldn't mind if there was either a new Punisher Game that is off line, or a Capcom Classic Collection 3 for the 360 with 1991's Punisher game included.
I'm about 100% sure this game is going to suck. The only reason they're putting it on PSN exclusively is that they know they can release it sans demo and people may mistakenly buy it without realizing how crappy it probably will be.
Unless I'm blind (not unlikely) there's not a MCP article on Jack Thompson finally being disbarred but everyone should see this cake.

As for the actual disbarment, I honestly hope it doesn't stop him from being the #1 anti-gaming advocate. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't...or something like that.
I never wanted to give that guy any more press. He's a joke, and it's about time his "peers" did something about it. Good news, yes, but people made too big a deal of him as it is. Parties? Come on.

Anyway, today. Zack Snyder's apparently turned game designer- http://chud.com/articles/articles/16472/
post #433 of 1153
Is he going to adapt a classic game and re-imagine it?
For what it's worth, sales-wise, Boom Blox has started to catch on. It ain't setting the world on fire exactly, but it's doing well.

But forget that. For me, the real "What the fuck?!" of that article is finding out there's a Saw game happening.
Yep. Don't worry, it'll probably suck as much as Saw VI.

Nice.
Blizzard got sidetracked with WOW, about damn time they went back to their core games. Starcraft, Diablo, Warcraft 4 maybe?
What a load of horseshit. Thanks for the assfucking, Activision/Blizzard!
I kinda agree. I don't see the benefit of releasing each campaign separately, at least as far as fans are concerned.
I don't think it's that big of a deal, so long as the content warrants its own release. If the story they want to tell is big (and good) enough to span three separate titles, then I have no complaints.

Still, it might smart a little to shell out $50 for the first StarCraft in a decade without getting to play as Zerg or Protoss in the campaign.
That was more or less my primary issue.

Bioshoquel

Of all the games that I play that my wife hates, and there are a lot of them, I think she hates Bioshock the most. It's "the really dark one set in the thirties where you shoot clowns."

Gold.

The trailer doesn't say a whole lot but it looks pretty, and hell-- Bioshock! I'll happily play more of that.

Alex, I saw some new hands-on with Left 4 Dead articles, were you at any of those at all?
No, unfortunately. Can't wait for that one... there's apparently a demo hitting early November.
After playing through all the Orange Box games twice, I sold it back for credit towards Dead Space. My only regret was the loss of Portal. This is great news!
I'm surprised Portal fits the size limits of Arcade. I could have sworn it was a fairly big install, even for such a short game.
"Despite your previous violent, unprofessional behavior, I am still alive."

Nice.

That said, all my Valve dollars are allocated towards Left 4 Dead and TF2 updates when they happen.
