Thread Starter
Post here and share your thoughts about the finalized list.

Once the list is complete, I'll open up another thread for everyone's personal lists.

The List starts with number 100 after 7:00 am EST today.
The list, so far, is skewing recent. I hope we're not as bad as the boomers on the official AFI list.

If there are only 3 post-1999 movies that made the list, then I'm really surprised by two of them. Both good movies, but I've never gotten the sense that they were Top 100 loved.
How in the hell did I forget Glengarry GlenRoss on my list? ugg

The Virgin Suicides is a huge shock. I don't see how it ranked so high on many lists to make this list.

Rio Bravo was in my top 10 to so I'm betting this top 10 will look nothing like mine. Having To Live and Die in L.A. on this list rocks. William Peterson is great in the Movie.

With Blazing Saddles at 94 I'm worried comedies won't get much love.
Fellowship in the 90s? shit, that blows. Great Escape should be higher, and Mulholland Dr.? wow. I would've never put that on a top 100 list.

is this where we post OUR top 100s? oh well, here mine is. it stinks of recent favorites, but I imagine I'll feel the same way in 10 yrs.

I'm so pleased to see To Live and Die in L.A. on there, even if it is so low on the list. But Big Trouble in Little China is better than Glengarry Glen Ross? Wow, that's amazing. I didn't even think BTILC would be on there. But now that I see that LOTR: FOTR is so low, I must admit that I have no clue how this is going to go. Sure is exciting, though!

Stuber, I think it's interesting that you have Some Like It Hot so low on your list. Not that I think it should be number one, it's just that I ended up doing the same thing. I started out making a roughly ordered list looking off of the IMDB top 250 and the real AFI list, and picking which ones I actually saw and thought were swell. That flick started out pretty high--it's very funny and I do own it--but as I kept adding more films and considering what I really value in them, it kept getting knocked lower and lower until it fell off altogether.
See, this is why I was having such a hard time making this list. I originally had both Big Trouble in Little China and To Live and Die in LA on my list, but took them and some others off because I thought I was making my list far to biased on what my favorite films were and not what should be considered the greatest. That was a hard balance for me. I ended up including some films that I don't really care for, but felt deserved credit as being great films while leaving off some films that I love. I should have just gone with my original list that was more about what my heart said than what my brain said.

I'm not worried about controversial choices on my list anymore. After seeing Stuber's list, I feel like a conservative pussy.
Since this was CHUD AFI list I don't think favorites that are good should be left out. THE AFI list was a bit biased leaving many comedies off and having Star Wars over Empire Strikes back. I made my list up by what films I love, watch alot, and are critically good. Godfather may be the best film ever made, I love watching it, and I see it's greatness but I sometimes get tired of it and that's why it's low on my list(28). I never tire of Airplane! and that's why it's higher(13).

And I can't believe how many films I forgot to put on. Shoot me for not having Saving Private Ryan.
I also like that a fil like BTILC made the list. I love that movie and it never gets old. Didn't make my list but could have.

Nothing personal, Rashomon and The Seven Samurai are two of the greatest films ever made, but there's no definition of "American" which fits them. They're definitely outside AFI's criteria.

Someone has to represent the reactionary, traditionalist viewpoint. It might as well be me.

Here was the list I submitted.

1.Citizen Kane
2.The Godfather
3.Casablanca
4.The Godfather, Part II
5.Lawrence of Arabia
6.Chinatown
7.Taxi Driver
8.The General
9.City Lights
10.Sunrise

11.The Searchers
12.Singin’ In The Rain
13.2001: A Space Odyssey
14.Sunset Boulevard
15.It’s a Wonderful Life
16.The Empire Strikes Back
17.Annie Hall
18.The Third Man
19.Nashville
20.All Quiet on the Western Front

21.Rear Window
22.Vertigo
23.Star Wars
24.Blue Velvet
25.Touch of Evil
26.The Lady Eve

30.The Bridge on the River Kwai

31.Duck Soup
32.A Streetcar Named Desire
33.On the Waterfront
34.Jaws
35.To Kill a Mockingbird
36.Schindler’s List
37.One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest
38.Sherlock Jr.
39.Mean Streets
40.The Wild Bunch

41.Goodfellas
42.Bride of Frankenstein
43.Dr. Strangelove
44.A Clockwork Orange

94.Modern Times (another accidental duplication)
95.Patton
96.The Mark of Zorro (silent)
97.Bonnie and Clyde
98.The Graduate
99.Manhunter
100. Gone With the Wind (purely on historical importance)

After about #25, I didn't get too hung up on ranking them. Just a hair's difference between most of them.

And, in retrospect, I feel silly for the duplications and leaving off This is Spinal Tap.

yes, and in retrospect.. I'd swap it for Grumpy Old Men. In fact, this is not the list I submitted. the top 30 or 40 are the same, but after I sent it in to Anderson, I started to think to myself... Man, did I forget some? And sure enough I did... This is Spinal Tap wasn't on the original. And Return of the King was higher by about 6 or 7 spaces. There was more tweaking, but those were two changes I have made. And I imagine, I will continue to change it many times over the years to come.

My criteria was simple, I went with classics I agree that are amazing, and my own favorites. if this is going to be a joint effort, I want as much of my personal taste in there as possible. (thus, having Magnolia #1 and the presence of Eternal Sunshine.
Oh, I've been kicking myself right and left since I sent my list in. The last few days at work I've been pretty busy, but every now and then I remember a really good one that I left off, and then I think about the last few that did make it on my list, and I just about have a hissy fit and throw papers off my desk.
The ones I forgot and wish I'd included (so far): The Last Detail, Dominick & Eugene, Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, and Barfly. For whatever reason, I don't own them, and because of my pseudo-random method of trying to dig every film I adore out of my memory banks, I missed out on those. Fuck, I really love Barfly.
Yeah, retrospect is a fun thing. I kind of regret some of the choices I had and others I forgot. I also know that the movies I HAVEN'T seen probably limited the hell out of me (though probably the best thing to come out of this list for me is that I am now actively knocking down my "I should see this movie" list hardcore).

My criteria were American films (and my only real exception was Goldfinger), and I ignored the five year rule. I debated Eternal Sunshine for a while, but decided to fuck it and throw it on there anyway. I should have put more of my own favorites as opposed to what everyone just considers classics because everyone says they are. Still, it's a good list.

It's funny, I saw Big Trouble In Little China and thought to myself "Top 100 of all.....oh, wait. It's CHUD. Heh heh. Cool."
So far this list is aces. Thanks, Anderson, for putting all the effort into this. This is very cool.
love the list 2 but wish Cool Hand Luke was higher. That film kicks ass in so many ways. Hope The Sting or Slapshot(long shot) are up higher on the list.
Damn, I didn't notice this whole AFI listing 'till it was too late. Would've loved to participate. I love these kind of lists, mainly for the fun of trying to guess the order.

If I had to guess, I'd say Godfather (part I or II) or Citizen Kane will be number one, or possibly even Casablanca or Taxi Driver. But with the kind of variety we're seeing, it's impossible to know for sure untill we actually see the top 10. I'm guessing Goodfellas will be suprisingly low (maybe in the middle 60's) as will Raging Bull (40th-30th maybe?). Hopefully there'll be some Hitchcock love in the top 10.

Oh, and please do not to comment in the actual CHUD AFI LIST thread (I'm looking at You, Lady Snowblood).

I got held up yesterday due to early birthday celebrations, but I'm back today.

Going to try and get this list up to 50 or lower.

good placement for Boogie Nights and The Big Lebowski. Seeing Dawn of the Dead ahead of The Fellowship of the Ring doesn't sit well with me.... I am afraid this list will scream horror flick fanboyism. (e.g. Halloweens, Elm Streets, etc.) But then again, I am sure a lot of people used the 5 year rule in their list, which I chose not to.

I'm loving the variety shown here so far. Never would've guessed Bottle Rocket to be on there, and I figured Magnolia would score higher than Boogie Nights. I'm quite sceptical about A Nightmare On Elm Street appearing anywhere, but Halloween might score highly.

But then again, Goodfellas looks to be higher than I guessed and Rear Window was suprisingly low. Looks like Virgin Suicides will be the only film on the list directed by a female.
I'm really digging the list. Only 18/50 picks I made are on it so far but I love that Bottle Rocket, Magnolia, and Robocop made it.

I'm fearing the usual top 10 but 50-100 is very eclectic. I'm guessing Seven Samuri won't make it because Anderson brought up an eligibility on another film.
I want to shoot myself now for not putting In the Company of Men on my list. HBO has a LaBute movie on and I went AHHHHHHH! So many mistakes.

I didn't have time to send in a list, but I've enjoyed reading the one that was made. Apocalypse Now! is my favorite film ever, and I'm really pleased to see it made it all the way.

I love that Rushmore got some mad crazy love. And I am quite pleased with the top 10. None of them I would put at No. 1, but I could put every one of them at No. 2. Which I think is good thing to have on a Top 10. Apocalypse Now! I think it's a classy no. 1. I like it.

Very nicely done, and timely. Brando dominates the top half, and rightfully so. Too few westerns, though. Oh, and NO Leone? Come on folks... I don't know if he was disqualified for shooting out of the country or what, but his films were made for American studios. Oh well.

Faaaaascinating. I never would have guessed that Apocalypse Now would be number one. And I'm also surprised at the inclusion of The Wizard of Oz--I'd just as soon have expected to see Annie on there. I didn't think Schindler's List would be that high and I expected The Shawshank Redemption to be a lot higher, based on how much praise I've heard.
Then again, I must be crazy because I only named about 40 of the final 100 at all. Here's what I submitted, but as mentioned above, I'm still kicking myself over a few omissions. It probably wouldn't have mattered anyway.

Why would you be surprised The Wizard of Oz made the list? Great songs, great characters, great story, memorable moments and they show it alot on tv.

What was 101?

I'm not sure! But The Wizard of Oz getting more love than Fight Club or Robocop seems out of character to me. I'm not certain I've ever seen anyone even mention it here before this.
I'm not saying it's a bad movie, and I'm not trying to slight anyone. It seemed odd to me, that's all.

I have to say the final list is very CHUD and I kind of like that. I'm still kicking myself for leaving off a few things. I think I may have allowed myself to be a bit too influenced by the AFI list, but I also composed it thinking of the best films ever and not necessarily my favorites. That and I haven't seen a lot of movies, which doing this made me realize. I currently have a stack of borrowed DVDs sitting next to me I need to watch.
