Thanks for all who replied. I love a good ghost story, and monster stories are right up there with me as well. Pity there weren't more replies; I assumed that every area has its' share of legends. I guess there just isn't enough room for bickering in this topic..hehe.
I mentioned the Mothman stories from my region and youth earlier. What isn't known is that there are both the above theories about the existence of Mothman. On October 10th, 1774, the Shawnee Indian chief Cornstalk, mislead by British forces into believing that the militia was nearby to witness the signing of a treaty, was ambushed with his troops. Nearly all the Chief's forces were killed in the attack, and legend has it that with his dying breath, he cursed the area of the battle for 200 years. This battle took place on a spot where the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers converged, what came to be Point Pleasant, West Virginia. In the said 200 year period, there were strangely numerous fires in the downtown area of Point Pleasant, an uncanny amount of devastating floods, a horrific hostage situation in the courthouse, and of course, the collapse of the Silver Bridge (depicted in THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES film). Many locals believed that the Mothman sightings of November of 1966 to December of 1967 were directly caused by Cornstalk's curse and that the Mothman (or Mothmen) were Thunderbirds (of Native American mythology). Strangely, the chain of tragedies did lessen significantly after 1974.
Part of the area where the most famous Mothman sightings occurred was a place called "The TNT area". It was a massive field of rounded concrete bunkers that were used to store munitions in WWII. It is also a sight of rumored experiments which some believe caused the anomaly known as Mothman. It has also been reported to be a hotbed for Men in Black and UFO activity, according to John Keel (who wrote The Mothman Prophecies) and I even recall many UFO related stories about Point Pleasant from my childhood.
