Regional ghost stories and monsters

I've always been fascinated by regional monster and ghost tales. From where I grew up (in Southeastern Ohio) the biggest were The Mothman (30 miles away in Pt. Pleasant, W.VA.) and the "White Lady" who some say still walks a 1/2 mile stretch of dirt road on certain nights just outside my home town. While I've never seen either, my Grandmother swore she had seen the White Lady on several occasions, and for my part, there was something about the area where she supposedly walks that made the hair on the back of my neck stand straight up.

What legends, ghosts, and monsters come from your cities and towns? I'd love to hear about them.

I too have a fondness for ghost stories and monster lore. More so paranormal though, I've always loved local ghost stories. I'm from Toronto so there are tons of stories from around here, probably too many to name. But I'm from a certain part of Toronto called Etobicoke it's pretty much the west part of the city. Anyway, there are a few cool little ghost stories that come right out of Etobicoke.

There is one about a former Psychiatric Hospital, it is said to be haunted. There are also stories surrounding an old historical site called Montgomery's Inn. Obviously an old tavern/Inn.

I'll let you glance over them. Here is the link. Toronto Ghosts & Hauntings / Etobicoke

When I was growing up in middle Tennessee, my friends and I always had our ears to the ground about ghost stories. We heard quite a few revolving around the Lewisburg-Mooresville area, in particular around two specific churches. Many people in that area claim to have seen Sasquatch-like creatures there, or in nearby parks. There was even a good horror-movie style story, with some couple making out in the middle of nowhere at night that suddenly realize they're being watched by this big hairy manimal that's standing in the back of their pickup truck. People say that they're fast, and that they stand erect like a man, powerfully built. Some say they're brown, some say they're black or mottled. Several people said they have a Predator-like ability to blend in with the forest. I never heard a story of them actually attacking someone, apparently they just scare the heck out of people.
At least in the case of the Lewisburg church (Bethberei), many people believe that the church and surrounding cemetary were (drum roll, please) built atop an ancient Indian burial ground, and that these beasts people see are manitou, shapeshifting protector spirits. One person said that they believed they were the result of a secret government experiment. Someone else said that they were ecological accident, caused by pollution nearby.
I never saw one of those things myself, but I know a few people that did, and I did see a group of men solemnly patrolling the road that Bethberei church is on one night, carrying shotguns on horseback. The first time I went there, actually, we heard gunshots down the road.

I live in Kansas City, Mo. Suposusedly theres this cemetary somewhere in Kansas thats not to far away that has a stair way to hell. Its inside a cript or something and its a very very long stairway that goes into the ground. Apparantley no one has ever made it to the bottom and when you go back up its longer then when you went down. One of my friends and I want to check it out, but thats probably gunna have to wait tell I get my driver's license.(Should be a couple weeks )

Thanks for all who replied. I love a good ghost story, and monster stories are right up there with me as well. Pity there weren't more replies; I assumed that every area has its' share of legends. I guess there just isn't enough room for bickering in this topic..hehe.

I mentioned the Mothman stories from my region and youth earlier. What isn't known is that there are both the above theories about the existence of Mothman. On October 10th, 1774, the Shawnee Indian chief Cornstalk, mislead by British forces into believing that the militia was nearby to witness the signing of a treaty, was ambushed with his troops. Nearly all the Chief's forces were killed in the attack, and legend has it that with his dying breath, he cursed the area of the battle for 200 years. This battle took place on a spot where the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers converged, what came to be Point Pleasant, West Virginia. In the said 200 year period, there were strangely numerous fires in the downtown area of Point Pleasant, an uncanny amount of devastating floods, a horrific hostage situation in the courthouse, and of course, the collapse of the Silver Bridge (depicted in THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES film). Many locals believed that the Mothman sightings of November of 1966 to December of 1967 were directly caused by Cornstalk's curse and that the Mothman (or Mothmen) were Thunderbirds (of Native American mythology). Strangely, the chain of tragedies did lessen significantly after 1974.

Part of the area where the most famous Mothman sightings occurred was a place called "The TNT area". It was a massive field of rounded concrete bunkers that were used to store munitions in WWII. It is also a sight of rumored experiments which some believe caused the anomaly known as Mothman. It has also been reported to be a hotbed for Men in Black and UFO activity, according to John Keel (who wrote The Mothman Prophecies) and I even recall many UFO related stories about Point Pleasant from my childhood.

Both Savannah and Charleston take it one step further and have nightly "ghost tours" that last around an hour/hour and a half, where you walk through downtown and get about four or five legendary ghosts or haunts.

The Charleston one was interesting, including (they claim) the only non-debunked actual photograph of a ghost (an old mother leaning over the grave of her slain son).. you can see the picture here

You want regional ghosts and monsters? You don't know terror until you've run across the Grey Spectre of Cogswell Avenue Behind Where The Old A&P Building Used To Be Next To The New Wal-Mart.

I just heard people talking about it, like with alot of urban legends. I think it was mentioned on a radio station as well. I haven't checked the web, but you might be able to find something. If I find anything I'll post it.

Ya here in pittsburgh either we're all messed up or wierd shit is always happening here.

The one story I never forget because it happened right down the street from me: Supposedly this one house on my street is a very old farm house and while it was still a farm the guy killed himself in the basement and about 10 years ago an old couple that just moved in said they heard somebody walking around in their basement but could never find anybody. A few weeks later they both left the house comepletely perfect with all the lights on dinner still on the stove and all their clothes in their bedroom,

I still don't like going near that house it has a wierd feeling about it.

I have a friend here in Greenville, NC who has seen the Pactolus light on two separate occasions. He also lived with a ghost up until about a year ago. I have been out to Pactolus myself but as of yet I've not seen the light there. Come to think of it, I have another friend who has seen the light when he was younger. The story on this website was pretty much spot on to the version I heard.

you could try the shadowlands ghosts and hauntings page, they have that haunted index page. i live near Memphis, TN so i guess the most famous would be the ghost at the Orpheum Theatre. Jack is that stairway you were talking about anything like those cemetaries that are supposed to have gates to hell in them? i know there is one of them in NY near Albany.
