MLB All-Star Game

So I watched the Home Run Derby last night for the first time in a while (probably since McGwire/Sosa) and two things stuck out at me...

1) Even the BP pitcher didn't want to throw any strikes to Barry Bonds

2) Minute Maid Park looks more like an amusement park than a real stadium

I used to like the MLB All-Star game more than any of the other major sports' all-star games, mostly because it was the one time a year where I knew I'd be able to see at least one player from my favorite team (the Blue Jays).. other than that, it's really lost its luster.

A HR Derby should not last THREE HOURS.

True.. but I "watched" it while I was playing on my laptop.. whenever I heard the crowd cheer, I'd look up, follow the at-bat, then when that was over and they'd start interviewing whoever I'd go back to the computer.

Of course, that's how I watch normal baseball games on TV now, too.

Word. Whats up with ESPN? Their broadcasters are so cheesy. Berman was practically creaming his pants with every word last night. Theres nothing wrong with being a fan or enjoying the game but everything I saw on ESPN from the Legends to the current players was just so cheesy and felt tacked on and fake. I use to like the Allstar game way back when but i'm really tired of the players phoning their performances in and treating it like a vacation. People voted you there to see your skills not your smiling mug.

"If I ain't startin, I ain't departin"-who said that famous quote about the All Star game?

I don't think players have cared about the all star game since the Pete Rose era when he ran over the catcher. The first year players are happy to be there but too many of the players leave before the game is over. The best players get 2 AB's if they are lucky and then we have to watch an Expo for 6 innings and 2nd base.

I kinda like the way they make the all star game count for home field but if they do that they shouldn't let the fans choose the starters. Because the game changed from the fans seeing their favorite to it counting. The fams almost made some huge mistakes this year besides picking Giambi. Everett and Nomar almost started at SS. Biggio was 5th in the OF.

Let the fans pick some fav's but leave it to the managers and players if it counts for home field advantage. And if it does count let's see some sac bunts, moving a runner to 3rd w/ a chopper to 2nd. Don't swing for the fences every at bat.

I agree with you. For the record there isn't one Allstar game I look forward to in any sport anymore. Saying that i'm desperate to watch something so i'll probably catch the game tonight if for nothing else to see Clemens and watch him and Piazza do the kissy kissy thing.

If I never hear Berman's tired schtick again, I would die a happy man.

Minute Maid Park is not that bad, actually. Beleive me, anything is an upgrade from the Astrodome. That was the worst place to watch a baseball game, ever.

I've seen a couple games at Enron... ahem... Minute Maid. I loved the park.

The All-Star game may have lost it's luster, but let's not lump it with the Pro Bowl, or the NBA's attempts either now...

Yeeesh... the Pro Bowl, why they even play it is beyond me.

It's called "all-expenses paid vacation to Hawaii."

But yeah, to even charge ESPN to televise the game is tantamount to highway robbery.

Oh its better than the probowl i'll give it that not by a mile though.

This game is a perfect example why fans shouldn't vote and managers shouldn't pick starting pitchers based on hometown love.

Jason Schmidt should have started and Jeff Kent should not be on the team. Kent is a butcher at 2nd and cost the NL 3 runs. Now Home Field advantage is on the line w/ the best not deciding it right away.

Good news for the NL. Estebon Loiaza(another guy who doesn't belong) is coming in so the NL should score some runs against him. I'll guess 3 in the 3rd.

And thank you sammy for not diving into the wall to try and catch those bullets by Ichiro and Pudge. If Roger gives them up so easily don't kill yourself.
Would also be nice to have an actual CF in the game. someone who can get to the balls like Beltran. Berkman belongs in RF or LF not center.

Esteban did pretty well, especially against Sammy who could have a case made against him as to why he shouldn't be at the game this year as well. Thankfully, Carlos Zambrano came in to help the AL out some more.

Loaiza had a better chance to pitch well since it wasn't all that long ago he was a swingman.

A lot of starting pitchers historically get lit up in the AS game because they don't have their normal pregame routine to stick to. Of course, Clemens doesn't have that excuse....

Pujols is the man, BTW. I almost can't wait until Bonds retires so that this guy can get his due.

And WTF is up with this "oh, let's stop the game and honor Clemens." Hey Rocket, here's an award even though you stunk up the joint tonight. Enjoy!

It's 10:15 pm and they just got through the fourth inning. Give Clemens the damn award in the showers and keep the game going!
If Beltran is in Center he catches the AROD ball and no run. Estaban walks Bonds-Pussy

What's with 1 inning and that's it?

And the Roger Clemens oral worship continues. Get kent out.

I'll agree with that. The only reason I said anything in the first place was because someone else said something about Loaiza before he even pitched in the game. I'm a White Sox fan, as I'm sure you already know, so I felt I needed to stand up for one of my guys. I don't have an agenda against the Cubs or anything like that, although, it probably looks like it from my statement. I know Angel is a Cubs fan, so I said something....after the fact that Zambrano gave up a run, not before.

I hear ya. As a Blue Jays fan, even now I still have to hear all that crap about Mike Mussina and Cito Gaston from over 10 years ago ...

With any luck, our only rep (Ted Lilly) won't even get out of the bullpen..

I agree. Minute Maid Park is a joke. What's with that pole in center? I just don't get it. The same goes for the hill.

The Derby is getting boring. Maybe they should decrease the number of outs to 5. It would make it a lot shorter. I was at the Derby last year and I found myself looking at my watch quite a lot.

I know your a Sox fan. I just couldn'y understand why Loiaza comes in after Mulder with all the other pitchers the A.L. have. Loiaza isn't the best pitcher on his team, i just found it odd. I figured Barry would tag him for a HR.

which Yankees didn't make the all star game?

And what are the chances they run out of pitchers again?
I didn't realize how weak the AL starters are. I knew Vasquez was there but Ted Lily? Kenny Rogers? Jake Westbrook. I can't believe the NL is down 9-4. Though the pitching rotation has something to do with it. Guess Loiaza looks good by comparison.

Mine-Schmidt-2, Johnson-2, Sheets-1, Zambrano-1, Glavine-1. And if Johnson or Schmidt get roughed up Sheets or Zambrano go 2. 8th belongs to Kolb, 9th is Gagne time. Clemens, Pavano, Graves, Benitez, and Hernandez play extra innings. Wouldn't have played Clemens as he was getting roughed up 3/4 starts.

That's fine. I, myself, was wondering why Buehrle wasn't going instead of Loaiza. I realize that Loaiza is not the same pitcher he was last season. I figured it had something to do with Torre not knowing much about the team. Frank Thomas, for instance, wasn't picked last year when I thought a better case could be made for him than for Carl Everett. I usually don't see eye to eye with Torre, I guess. And yes, he picked way too many Yankees as reserves. Maybe a limit of players from each team should be put into effect? I'm getting tired of managers putting their players on the reserves looking past more deserving players. Remember Brenley a few years ago? He put half the Diamondbacks on the team, looking past Cliff Floyd who later made it on the team because of an injury.

McCarver is a joke. He's the only person in existence that makes me like Deion Sanders.

And what is up with the talking CGI baseball telling me what a curveball is? IT'S 11:05 PM! NO KIDS ARE UP ANYMORE TO WATCH YOUR KIDS CRAP.. or if they are, they're watching something more worthwhile, like Showtime or Cinemax.

Clemens and Kent cost the NL home field advantage in the World Series. Way to go Houstin Astros.

What do you care, I thought the Cubs weren't going to lose another game until Prior hangs em up.

I guess it does mean when the Cubs sweep the Yankees it will be at Wrigley.

Tim and Buck do indeed suck donkey's arse. I watched the first few innings and turned it off. Looks like I missed nothing special. Btw Thomas should have been voted to the game or gotten reserve withdrawl zombie Giambi should have never made the trip. Jeter shouldn't have started M. Young should have and yeah Beltran in center and not Berkman but Berkman replaced Junior. All in all a weak allstar weekend.

Yay for Bud Selig though he read all those nice things about Clemens from a card. Lucky for all parties no tied ballgame either.

Ok, I wasn't going to bring this up, but listening to ESPN radio this morning, apparently this story won't go away...

People are now SERIOUSLY thinking that Mike Piazza tipped pitches in order to get his revenge on Clemens by letting the AL lineup whack him around in the first inning.

LET THIS STORY DIE! There is no more story, no matter how much you try and bring up up time after time. Clemens and Piazza are competitors and don't like each other. What's the problem?

Yeah, seriously, Bud, learn to memorize shit. Looked like a third grader in a debate contest.
