I didn't think to check the damn emails on the other PDAs, I just thought they were for voice messages and security upgrades. Sheesh I'm a maroon. Still, I've been able to open almost every cabinet I've found, so no major loss.

Thanks for the tip, it sure helped my frame rate out. Also am I the only one on here who is yawning at the scare factor of this game? I can honestly tell you that this game is not in the least bit scarying me. I'm playing with the lights off and headphones on and it still isn't working for me. Maybe Fatal Frame series just spoiled me.

Btw I'm almost at the monorail now.

Combined with the 4.9 Catalyst Beta these and the Cachemeg tweak I posted this guide pushed my FPS up a ton.

The Guardian is giving me a little trouble, but I've got his number. I'll chainsaw him to death if I have to.
The mods are coming along nicely too. There's a Pistol with mounted flashlight and ...

I was just speaking figuratively, I don't remember if I got the chainsaw in Hell yet. The Guardian was a lot easier than he seemed at first, you just have to throw everything youve got at the vulnerable blue ball above him. Oh, and the green teleporter thing you use to get to him, before you go in it walk around it to get to the hidden BFG.

The plasma gun in Hell is pretty obvious when you get to it, its on a big ol pentagram. Or are you at another part of the game entirely? If so, the first appearance of those weapons are unmissable. Don't worry about it.

Yes as far as I know, Quake 4 is using this engine. We should be hearing more about it soon.

So, I've beaten another boss now, I must be close to the end. Despite some minor shortcomings, this game has gripped me like no other.

"Welcome to the MESS HALL!"

Well, I've beaten it. Pretty cool little ending scene.

The review at http://pc.ign.com sums up a lot of my feelings. I knew it was repeative and the gameplay was slightly lacking, but that atmosphere and presentation made up for it. I'm already replaying some levels just for fun, like good ol' Hell.

The game should've had more Mancubus, a few more uses of Berserker, and a chance to explore outside more throughly. And I wanted more of the thing we saw just before the credits rolled. Oh well.

I'm still trying to get to the Comm Tower, and I picked up both of these weapons last night. I'm actually in the area with that moving lift that can go to one of three stations, and you have to figure out how to unlock the exit in area three.
This game is definitely "hot gaming pussy", to quote Slater. I'm loving the Event Horizon-meets-Total Recall atmosphere, but I've also gotta agree with the qualms about repetition in the gameplay. It's not a big deal to me though, because shooting stuff (even the same stuff, over and over) is fun. Shooting terrifying, expertly animated and lit stuff in terrifying, expertly animated and lit environments is even more fun.

I'm also really digging how intense the brief jogs out onto the surface of Mars are. You really get the sense that it's an utterly hostile, uninhabitable shitstorm that's trying its hardest to kill the hell out of you. I found my first jaunt outside just as intense as any of the Hell-related happenings inside.
Ok for those of you complaining about the darkness and how easy it is try this one on for size.

http://www.forumplanet.com/planetdoo...32&tid=1443699

I just started over with this mod it is awesome. Trying it on Marine difficulty.

Its got some really good mods. Like the pistol flashlight mod for those of you who are afraid of the dark. It also makes it so you dont disentigrate enemies by simply shooting them, unless you use one of the bigger weapons or the chainsaw. Oh and here's the best part altering a lot of the game play. Unless you dissentigrate the regular zombies, they wont die. They'll continue to respawn. Needless to saw since all you have is a shotgun and a pistol at the begining it adds a whole new level of hard to the game. A few more tweaks here and there but nothing major. Enjoy.

FINALLY reached hell at last just then, and it's very cool indeed. Some great effects. And I killed a Hell Knight with a chainsaw!!!! Those things are HUGE!!! Sorry about all the shouting and excitement, but I love this game the more I play it. I don't even find it that repetitve, the locations and situations are diverse enough to sustain my intrest, even if there are some underused enemies, such as the baby-bee things with wings which are only met once or twice while in the station, although you meet them again in hell. The 'Pinky' demons are also not used much, and neither are the (great) chainsaw zombies.

The last level before you go to tell, the one FULL of skeletons, corpses and blood everywhere, was lovely and grim. Great atmosphere. I wish there had been more there were completely bloodshed like that one before you reached hell, and less clean, metallic levels.

Anyway my only real complaint now is the gun noises still suck. Although I dont even notice them anymore, so it doesn't bother me. It's great how they managed to keep the shotgun useful from the first level right through to the last, just like in the old game.
go to PlanetDoom.com in the forums there should be a mod called Beefy Sounds get the non mod version tho. So its a bit more straightforward. The sounds are enhanced and much better.
I'm surprised that it's not only running on my PC, but actually running well.

Granted, I can't run it all maxed out and stuff, but it still looks amazing enough for me, and there's nary a framerate drop. Haven't had that much time to log with it, though.
Finished it today. Great game, impressively 'Whoaaa what the fu...' final boss. Ending is pretty good, although there should be an alternate one, depending on choices you make in-game. Because with the choices I made, it didn't make much sense. Hopefully there will be a Doom 4: Hell on Earth now.

Hell was a bit dissapointing in all, all fire and brimstone, it should have been more 'disturbing' like it got towards the very end, where it had crucified corpses with their intensines hanging out, and corpses with no limbs flailing on walls. Nice and disturbing, like the hell levels in the old Doom games. Most of hell in this Doom feels like the alternate universe in Clive Barker Undying, or a level in American McGee's Alice.

Doesn't detract from a great lengthy game theat I have throughly enjoyed and recommend. Combat felt weak at first, until I relaised it's just combat with ZOMBIES thats weak. Fighting the demons and such (where they dont gib after one shotgun blast like zombies) sending them flying with the shotgun or rocket launcher was far more staisfying. It's one of those games that get's better the further you get, although it does drop most of the scary atmosphere after the first hour or so.
At the part where you first meet up with the chainsaw zombie. That's a bad mofo.

I don't know, I really really like the game so far but I feel like it's missing something. Can't quite pinpoint it.

Still, having a great time.
I think I've been spoiled by so many great first-person shooters in the past couple of years. Call of Duty, Thief 3, Medal of Honor, Jedi Academy, Far Cry...

Doom 3 just doesn't cut it for me. Technically it's a monster, and it's crazy atmospheric, but... I just don't find it that much FUN. It's just: enter dark room, lights flicker, something shambles or leaps out at you from shadow or behind a (often hidden) door, kill it. Repeat for several hours, as you fumble about without being able to see much and with nowhere near enough supplies and ammo.

Yeah, the game (especially the Hell levels) is visually impressive, but this type of gameplay (find the keycard, fight the huge boss monster, etc.) really should've been retired when more innovative games came along. This is a corridor-based Serious Sam with impenetrable darkness and fewer monsters. If this thing came from anyone but id, people would be taking it back to EB for a refund.

At this point, I have absolutely zero doubt that Half-Life 2 will be a more satisfying gaming experience.
If we're honest though, did anybody really expect Doom 3 to offer more innovative gameplay than Half-Life 2? All the pre-release excitement was because of the visuals, which didn't dissapoint.

That's a good point.

I'm pretty deep into Delta Labs and I'm still loving the game. They did a great job of pacing out the placement of new weapons and enemies...just when I'm getting sick of something, a fresh ingredient seems to enter the mix. I can't wait to see how this ends.
The almost constant darkness and hassles with the flashlight set-up are a common grievence it seems going by message boards....
And I for one HATE 'Bosses'.
Nothing worse (or more boring) than slogging through a level only to die countless times with trial and error (or just plain tough due to lack of lives at the time) trying to kill an all powerful Boss at the end.
Never liked it...Never will.
Give me tougher general levels rather than a Boss.

I was going to get this for the XBox...don't think I'll bother now.

Considering it cost more than any recent game I can remember ($54.99?!?), yeah, I guess I did expect something more than decade-stale gameplay gussied up with zazzy graphics. Guess I'm the chump.

This is the newest tweak for those with ATI Video cards. Seems to be a winner:

Apparently, ATI boards aren't having a great time with Doom 3.
This was posted by M.I.A. in another Doom 3 thread:

REVIEW

It's a good review, but I just think it's funny how the guy (Trevor) is disappointed with Doom, but mainly because of his anticipation. By now, I figured that whole get-really-excited-then-be-totally-disappointed routine would be worn a little thin (after such good ones as The Phantom Menace and the Matrix sequels). Sure, I was excited for Doom and I pre-ordered it, but I also really like it. Just as I'm excited about HL2 and Halo 2 (and I've pre-ordered them) but damn, I'm long over the days of waiting in line for hours.

Like I said above, I really like D3. Sure, it ain't revolutionary, but it's a beautiful game and it's the only one that's ever scared the shit out of me. And I sure do love blowing shit up.
I understand the complaints, and agree with some of them (some of my very best kills happen in total fucking darkness - we can have plasma guns but can't figure out how to tape a flashlight to it? No room on our damn helmets?).

Nevertheless, I'm having a blast playing this game.
I'm having fun, as well. I'm not too far in (damn double shifts at work...), but I can't say that I'm disappointed or anything.

I do think that the game could have used a full-on daylight skirmish mode. Anyone remember the AVP game's skirmish mode, with the constantly spawning xenomorphs? That made for some crazy, mindless fun. This game could use something like this, where you can always see the carnage you've wrought. Maybe a "shopping mall" level populated with zombies? Although, some fan is probably working on that one as we speak, among other things. I'd love to see this engine in action for some crazy run 'n gun stunts in interesting locales.
I think I just had my best gaming rush ever. There's this part in one of the Alpha Lab levels where you can hear those spider things scuttling around. I can't see the fuckers, so I figure that it's just some ambient stuff that they threw in. I walk out on this bridge and into a hallway with some barrels and a bunch of zombie guards. They shoot, I fall back, only to get eaten by a brood of little Thing-lets.

I reload my last save, arm my Chain gun, and go all Schwarzenegger. I blow up the barrels, taking care of most of the zombies with rifles. The two that are left, I tear apart. I turn around, and unload on the spiders.

Shallow? Yeah. Fun? Double yeah.

And I can't help but mention how much this feels like the original Doom. Sure, it's a bit slower, but it still has that maxim of "When demons attack, dump the crosses. Load up on ammo." If that Regan girl from Excorcist was in the Doom universe, someone would have taken her out with extreme prejudice. I love that.

Finally, a quick question: I just took out the spider-mama miniboss. The last gun I picked up was the chain gun from the martianbuddy locker. Have I missed anything? The security guy mentioned having a BFG tucked away in his office, but I couldn't find the thing (EDIT: The office, I mean). I also have the feeling I should be packing a plasma rifle by now, but that's not the case. Again, did I miss something, and will these weapons pop up later if I did?
The decade stale gameplay is the whole point of DOom. Why would you have expected anything more. Certainly Half-Life 2 will be a much different experience but you can't directly compare the two. They have much different aspirations. I'm loving D3. The zombies are fantastic.
Ok um...Is there a way to get BACK to the Martianbuddy locker after I've already made my way into the Alpha Labs? I knew what to do, but I kept going forward thinking I could just go back and get it later.

Where I'm at is: I just started fighting those enemies that look like two-headed imps. Specifically I just died at an area where I'm fighting them but, apparently, if I fire my gun the whole place explodes.

Alternatively, just tell me I dont NEED the martianbuddy locker and will get the chaingun somewhere else (AND SOON!)

Oh, and Doom 3 fucking rocks.

- Fate
Don't use the shotgun in that room, the pellets are hitting those cannisters on the left side, which makes them go kablooey. Switch to the assault rifle and aim carefully.

You'll get a chain gun soon enough, don't worry about the martianbuddy locker.
damn. this game is pretty. And immersive. Haven't gotten around to installing a next gen card of any sort; though I did get my hands on a coworkers used 9800 pro for the time being, the sucker still looks sweet.

It's been a long time since a game freaked the shit out of me. Clive Barkers came close to matching that one moment in Quake 1 - when you first encounter a Shambler and the lights flicker in that tiny hallway....everything going to hell was a unnerving. Though I hope it doesn't get boring/repetitive as the other posters here have mentioned; I'm hooked.

You're cool.

His office is in the Delta Labs, which you haven't gotten to yet. The BFG is readily available if you have the door code (which you do, it's in his log).

I was running it wonderfully on my 9700 Pro before I upgraded. No reason to jump up to a next-gen card for this game alone...

Ya know, I'm really starting to get tired of being punished for picking up health and ammo.

Beautiful game, but some serious design mistakes along the way.

Yeah, what's weird is that the monsters use the same tricks in every single level...walk in room, turn around, look for monster behind you....pick up item, run into last room, see if monster spawned...take 2 steps, turn around to see if monster is behind you, etc.
I was feeling the same way. Then I discovered the best way to go through the game.

Using the chainsaw. Alot. No one beats it. Not rocket launching skeletons (most of the time), nor fireball shooting floating head demons. Those screaming faces are sluts, but a few bullets makes them a whole lot deader.

Needless to say, the way I use the quicksave button you'd think it was delivering a highly potent form of heroin to my body via my index finger.
Well the game arrived today.

I've installed it. I've played it a bit. And man does the game look like shit with my weakass card. I need to upgrade. Hopefully I'll be able to do that soon.

But at least I have the game and I'm able to play it, so I'm good for now.
Well, beat the game.

Fuck if the end guy wasn't easy as hell. Getting to him wasn't quite as easy, but the game just wasn't long enough. It had some really great things, but just not enough variation to be an all-time great. Bah, just glad I didn't pay for it. The ending also.... sucked.
Yeah I figured out the trick to the last boss really fast. I only died twice, and that was due to jumping backwards into the pit. The other bosses were a hell of a lot harder, especially the first huge boss in hell.
That fucker in hell kicked my ass all over even though I figured out how to kill him. I just kept running out of rockets. I don't know if I even came close to dying during the last fight, the guy was FUCKING HUGE though.
