Doom 3 - Page 2

Looks like I'll be able to play in 1024 x 768 with pretty good framerates on the x800 Pro. I never play in 1600 x 1200 anyways, onscreen text is usually way too small in that resolution.

I like FPSs on both the pc and console, but if pressed I'd have to say mouse/keyboard control certainly feels more accurate.

It's all about time spent adjusting. When I first picked up the controller for some Halo, I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. You've just got to give it a few hours. I'd say it wouldn't take more than a half hour with a mouse in an FPS for Slater to become a convert, but oh well. This debate has been done many, many, many times...

I'm not sure if it uses pixel shader 3.0...I think I read that it's just more performance efficient, no necessarily different effects?

In the benchmarks released to www.hardocp.com ATI did come in a bit behind. However, ATis drivers always improve game performance a lot over time. UT2004 runs much better than it did before thanks to new drivers. There will be new ATI drivers at the beginning of August right when the game hits, so we'll see how things look then.

Agreed 100%. I can go from Tron 2.0 (or whatever) on the pc to Riddick (or whatever) on the Xbox, and it just takes a couple of minutes to get into the groove of the different system.
I'm definitely going to have to wait for the X-Box version seeing as my computer craps out when I play Solitare.

Sort of on-topic, that latest Far Cry patch has been recalled.

Put in my in that "my PC sucks ass, but I do have an XBox" camp.

I can see how mouse/keyboard is more accurate, but I'll be damned if I just can't get used to it. Analog sticks with higher sensitivity works fine for me.
There is a bit of a adjustment playing with WASD and a mouse, but believe me, it's more than worth it -- after all, they don't call them "twitch" games for nothing, and usually it's the mouse that's twitching.

Everyone should play through the Doom 95 shareware to get in the spirit (if you don't have a copy of the original lying around). The game is still a shitload of fun. Awesome level designs, and highly entertaining music and sound effects. Hurt Me Plenty is the difficulty I'd reccomend, the others are just too easy by today's standards.

I didn't manage to get the mouse working, but using WASD and turning with the arrow keys (up for fire) is fine for me.

My fave DOOM port is zdoom, which can be DLed at http://zdoom.org/download.html -- it allows full customization of the controls, and even console commands ala Quake. You can even have jumping if you want, although that's a bit of a cheat on the original maps. I'm still waiting on Strife (the DOOM engine game Tim Willits worked on for Rogue) support, but supposedly it's on the way...

Yeah, the 1.22 .zip works great -- just extract it into your DOOM directory, and click on the zdoom.exe icon. Ahh, memories.

6 days or so until reality implodes upon itself, and all that is left is Doom.

That means I really, really want this game.

I'm going through Doom 2 again now. The double barreled shotgun is one of my favorite game weapons ever. It best be in Doom 3 somewhere...

We will, of course, have to get some Chud Deathmatches going once it hits. I eagerly look forward to such things as Berseker punching you guys in the face, getting a rocket in the back from you guys, whoring all the armor pick ups on the map, all that good stuff.

Theres a bit of buzz that some Gamestops may be putting it on sale a few days early, around the 31st or the 1st. Give your store a call.

My local Gamestop is so cool they don't even have PC games. What the fuck.

The news has come down from the HardOCP Mountain, and it is good:

http://www2.hardocp.com/article.html?art=NjQ0

The bottom line is that you can beat the fuck out of this whore, and she still looks pretty. According to the boys at HardOCP (not to be confused with the bad guys in RoboCop, for sure), you can even run Doom3 on a 64mb MX at 640x480, and its still Wowsville. I (2.20gb P4, 512mb DDR RAM, 128mb NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4600) am more psyched now that ever.

Yes, I'm very pleased to hear it's been optimised well. I really hope I'll be able to run good with High Quality textures, but the OCP seems to think my 128mb 9700 Pro isn't enough...we'll see how it goes.

I hope going with Stereo sound instead of the 5.1 saves me some FPS too

The more I think about the environment and its great presentation, the more I realize that the co-op mode for Doom is gonna own SO hard. Now I'm getting kinda upset that there's no release date for the XBox.

In theory it will own, but keep in mind it's a third party developer doing the port. It's not guaranteed to rock. I will definitely try it when it comes out, though.

Since this game is going to be bigger than God himself, there will definiely be a mod team attempting to bring co-op to the PC at some point.
Impressions on the XBox version at E3 were pretty positive. They all conceded that it didn't look as good or run quite as consistently smooth as the PC version, but it plays very well (using the standard console FPS control scheme) and is one of the best looking console games ever, which I think I can live with.

All I need is a friggin' release date.

Oh, I'm thinking there will be several teams devoted to that endeavor. If there ever was an engine that was mod-friendly, it is DOOM3. Practically anything and everything can be scripted for the game, and I'm sure people are already working on presumptions based on the leak.

Fyi

it would be way cooler if someone from CHUD won pc gamer's little monthly giveaway than some random bloke out there in the real world.

If you want to win a free copy of Doom 3, signed by the id guys email them at eyewitness@pcgamer.com
with "Hellknight" in the subject heading. Include your mailing address/vitals.

I'm scrambling like hell to get a processor upgrade and a ATI 9800 for this.

I spent endless hours playing Doom 2 with friends on my modem.
I'm suprised there hasn't been a Gamepsot or IGN review for this yet. When was that exclusive PC zone review, 3 weeks ago? That must have cost them a shitload. Enough is enough, I want an unbiased review that hasn't been blatantly payed off now.

I'm not saying the review was a fraud and that Doom 3 doesn't deserve it's score of 94, but to get an EXCLUSIVE review on one of the biggest games in history, exclusive for THREE WEEKS, there was no way it was going to get anything lower.

Just look at the 'exclusive' early reviews of Driv3r and The Getaway in magazines, both got 9/10 in the despite being messes.

What's even more amazing is the game hasn't been pirated yet.

I'll start hounding Gamestop with phone calls tomorrow, they supposedly are getting it the 31st in Certain Locations...EB says BY Wednesday.

And an insane new trailer just came out this second. The main highlights include many shots of monsters getting blown up in a beautiful manner. Only FilePlanet has it for the moment, FileShack and 3dGamers and such should have it soon.
IGN recently mentioned that they won't be getting an advance copy at all, and will be standing on line with the rest of the plebes next week. So I wouldn't expect too many reviews before or at launch.
I loath Fileplanet, but supressed my hatred for a need of Doom 3 and got the latest trailer.

It just had sex with my eyes.

I can't tell if constantly posting in this thread is making the wait longer, or shorter...
Yea that was quite damn impressive wasn't it?

I wonder how long the beginning of the game is...seems like they had a lot of different scenes that belonged in the beginning of the game with (what looked to be) a lot of non-playing scenes...

My question is what rigs do you guys have?

Me and alot of friends are putting a lot of heat onto our credit cards.
For anyone interested (which would be pretty much everyone in the thread):

Doom 3 Main Theme (full version)

Sounds cool, very Tool-ish. I'm a sucker for a thumping bassline, what else can I say?
I went to a Best Buy here in Des Moines and there was no Doom 3 .
here's the skinny- straight from gamestop.

shipped yesterday (friday); it's all up to UPS as to when it gets to stores. i'd bet monday. however, as far as everything i've been told/read/dictated by upper management, its very strictly street-dated for 8/3.

Up above, someone said Best Buy jumped the street date and that it's official. I went to check. I'm really not that dumb not to know to look up the official release date...I was just letting people know it's not at Best Buy.
So has nobody found a copy from a store breaking the street date yet?

And I wish people would stop going on about 'Oh man, I'm going have heave to really juice up my rig for this' or 'My *specs* will never play this beast!'. The specs aren't even that high, it will run fine on most machines. Asumming your not on a Pentium 133 that is.

Actually, I don't think that iso has been cracked yet, has it? Not that I would DL it in any case -- will continue to sit on my hands 'til Tuesday...
Yeah, there are already cracked versions, keygens and cheat programs out to download. They don't waste any time do they?

When's the European release, dammit? Saying 'around the 6th' isnt good enough!!!
Aw yeah, got a call from Gamestop today saying I should be able to pick it up tomorrow.
Yeah, getting mine tomorrow. I'll be calling Gamestop every hour on the hour.

"Is it there yet?"

Athlon XP 2800 overclocked to 3000+
Geforce 4 Ti4200 slightly overclocked (about 4400 speeds) 128 mb
1 GB DDR ram

So, even guys with lower end cards should be able to push this one at decent settings. Be encouraged.
Maus, I've been hearing that D3 is not all that nice to overclocked hardware, and that things may get buggy if you try to play the game with it. Just so you know...
Update: talked to a buddy of mine in IRC, he gave the following explanation on overclocking:

Overclocking only causes problems if you have only tested it on other games. Doom3 utilizes such renderpaths, that parts of the GPU that haven't been used by other games are suddenly needed. If those are unstable, it won't work properly.

Just to be wary in any case.

Next thing you know Carl's gonna be in here selling pirated copies for five bucks a pop...

You may buy the game on Tuesday, but you're still goin' straight to Hell!

Alas, the video card I recently ordered is taking forever to ship, so it looks like I'll be testing this one on my Geforce ti4600 after all.
