Breaking News on ESPN. Miami RB Ricky Williams pulls a Robert Smith and says he is retiring at the ripe old age of 27.

Wow, this changes things big time for the Dolphins. Ouch.
Posted this in the NFL thread, but hey, why not here too?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA HAHAHA

Die Fish die.

We posted at the same damn time, actually I beat you by a couple seconds though cuz mine was further down!

So neener.

*Sniff*

Wait... why am I sad? I'm a Jets fan, and the Dolphins just got fucked, heh... the fish... remember when Williams was supposed to get them through December? They couldn't even make the postseason with him, I wonder how well they'll do without him.
I think this is a big can of bullshit. Barry at least retired after 30 and gave his all for a shitty organization (The Lions). Smith had knee problems. Ricky Williams? Maybe his dreadlocks have taken too big a pounding from the Patriots. Its a huge slap in the face to the Dolphins who gave up alot to give Ricky his mano-e-mano status. This team's offense is built around Ricky and no one else. You can't call it a choke but i'll call that Ricky is a pussy. He's had anxiety problems before and I wonder if this has something to do with it. Still the guy should have played out this year and honored his contract why the fuck do you do this to your team before the draft? Travis Minor is now the featured back and Antoine Smith is off the market. Dolphins are screwed good job Ricky.

I think i'll take my guess at it. Its marjuana the guy probably smoked a ton of ganja and is afraid of getting nailed for it. If its not that then its something worse.

I'm interested to see his thinking behind this. Ricky was an odd one, so much talent squandered on someone who doesn't have the the football mentality.
Apparently he's on a plane to Asia at the moment, sporting a shaved head no less.
0-16???????? fiedler's gonna have a nice yr
post #9 of 74
1 less team to worry about in the afc. williams has no heart.
Who worries about the fish, I mean, after November that is.
Wow...you guys are being pretty harsh on good ole Ricky.

Whatever his problems were, his many many many problems were, I am sad as a football fan to see someone so talented leave the game for a seemingly unknown reason.

It really doesn't make sense...and not much that Ricky has done hasn't made sense.

Oh well. The FINS ARE FUCKED THOUGH. Jay fiedler and David Boston...YEESH.
Did I hear that right, the Dolphins didn't pick up a single running back in the draft? Heh, hoho, hahahaha...

"I just don't want to be in this business anymore," Williams told the paper. "I was never strong enough to not play football, but I'm strong enough now. I've considered everything about this. Everyone has thrown every possible scenario at me about why I shouldn't do this, but they're in denial. I'm happy with my decision. I'm finally free. I can't remember ever being this happy"

Oh, and I'm not hard on Ricky Williams, he's my new favorite athelete of all time.
I'm no Dolphins fan but this is just jacked. Guess we know why the Saints gave up on this basketcase afterall.

The head was shaved months ago. He said he did it so people couldn't tackle him by his hair any more.

I can't consider him "good ole" because what he did was fuck over the Dolphins a couple of weeks before pre-season. Last week, they might have made a run at Eddie George or Antowain Smith. He waited until it was basically impossible to replace him. He fucked the Dolphins who trusted him.

Fucking Longhorn
Maybe they can move A.J. Feely to running back.
They'll just deal for Indianapolis' Ricky Williams and all will be good.

And every fantasy football web site runner rejoiced, no more stat mixups between two players with the same name...
This is hilarious.
Yea, this is pretty strange...but then again, it's Ricky we're talking about.

He can now hit the bong as much as he'd like too.

I believe that was one of his major reasons for leaving.
When I heard this, my first thought was that maybe we was going through with that marriage to Mike Ditka.

He didn't want the pressure of being married to a U.S. Senator.

Yeah, I'm sure Mike would want a stay at home wife.
Amazing. Hell, I'm thrilled. Now the Dolphins won't wait until November to choke this year. Maybe the Bils won't finish last this year after all.
God friggin' dammit!!!!!!!!!! WTF Ricky? After all we've done for you - some thanks we get! You no-good, lowdown,.....

No, wait! I was just kidding Ricky! All is forgiven! Come back! Don't leave us alone with Jay and Dave! We're too young to join the Jets and Bills in the gutter!
I understand completely where he's coming from. Good for him.

That being said, he's completely fucked over his teammates. I think the more admirable decision would have been to play out the season, letting the organization know he's leaving ahead of time so they can plan ahead (though if the Fins attempted to trade him, he'd have to let his plan public).

And that's what sticks in peoples craw. After the draft, after guys like George and Smith are off the table, and right before the preseason. On top of that, though, is the fact that I just can't understand a player quitting when he hasn't accomplished all that much during his career... Jim Brown this guy ain't.

Jim Brown... Ricky wasn't even as accomplished as 'Fireball'.

If you don't love playing football, the NFL ain't for you. Since it IS your life, 24-7 for 8-10mo's of the year.

He still should have given the Dolphins more notice. He shit on them completely.

I ain't a Dolphin fan, but he was my only good fantasy football keeper from last year, so he shit on me too. Hell, I had William Green too. The two should hang out and get stoned together and then go straight to hell.

But seriously, he fucked the Dolphins.
Xtain gets it. It's so easy for us to say he should have stayed, but anyone who's been in a job they hated always looks for something else. That's just the way it is. I'm sure he's made enough money to last him a long time and he just wanted to live his life doing something he enjoyed doing and with people he liked spending time with.

I wonder if they have time to yank him out of Madden 2005 before it ships.

Wasn't Barry Sanders in Madden for like two years after he retired, because we kept hearing rumors he would come back? I know he was in '99...

So was Deion Sanders. He was always the first FA I would pick up when I started a new season/franchise.

I pretty much agree with GFC (surprise, surprise, if you see my sig)...I know right now what it's like to be in a job that you don't particularly like. I think he did screw over the Miami org in general, but is it ever a "good" time to quit? If you've got the means (whether it be a new job, or saved money) to not do that job anymore, wouldn't you quit as soon as you could? I know I'd be leaving my company in a bind, but if I got a new opportunity, or won a million dollars tomorrow, I'd quit the next day. I do believe he should have at least given Miami notice to try and find another RB, and when they did, they could announce that signing the same day as Williams' announces his retirement. But I'm sure that would have been leaked out eventually as well.

And I also heard that he sort of looked out for Travis Minor by waiting until Eddie George had been signed before he quit, so they'd pretty much have to start Minor as their RB this season. He's a poor man's Warrick Dunn, but there's no way he can handle as many carries as Williams did (and I'm an FSU homer).

Agreed. I think he was faster when he was at FSU than he is now. Miami kept trying to give him plays where he could use his speed.. toss sweeps, center screens, and he would still get caught. If they signed, say, Stacy Mack and used a one-two inside-outside combination, they might be able to do OK but for the most part, they're screwed.
Yea he screwed over the Dolphins, but what gives anyone here the right to judge Ricky? Where the fuck do you get off calling him a pussy? If he has anxiety problems he can't help it, if he smokes pot that ain't the reason he's quitting (Rasheed Wallace smokes, a lot, and he just took a pay cut to win another chamionship). The man doesn't have the desire to play football anymore, he could've just as easily done nothing for another year and collected another 3.6 million dollar paycheck. You can't blame a man for taking control of his life, to each his own.
Apparently the Dolphins knew about this on Friday, but kept from announcing it to squeeze out some more season ticket sales. Just felt like tossing that bit in, since something like 15,000 season tickets were sold on Saturday.
There are no guaranteed contracts in the NFL, if a team has the right to cut a player whenever they want, why can't a player quit whenever he wants?

Only players are supposed to be "loyal," didn't you know that?
He can quit but he is really screwing his teammates by not doing it before the draft. I'm betting the Offensive linemen want him dead.

I'm guessing he was thinking about this for a while and he should have mentioned to the coaching staff and owners so they could prepare better.

He has every right to retire but he should have thought of his teammates a bit. I was pissed when Robert Smith retired early cuz it screwed up my keeper league but anything that gets Wanny fired and out of the NFL is ok by me.

Whaaaaaaa? 15,000 season tickets in a day? I find that hard to believe.

It depends, if that was the first weekend they were available it wouldn't be all that surprising. Just going by the numbers I've heard is all, and has anyone else heard the rumor that he also just failed an NFL substance abuse test prior to his retirement? Most believe it's marijuana, but I've yet to hear the rumor be substantiated. If true, he would have been fined a few hundred thousand dollars and suspended for four games.

true, and a good point. However, if Ricky decides he wants to come back (drug habits can get expensive), who will trust him? He fucked over the Dolphina, why should anyone else trust him again?

I'm right there with you and Xtian. People ain't gonna understand this, and I do agree that perhaps it is a tad bit "selfish" to bail out at this specific time, but it's gutsy and I tip my hat to him for it. Obviously this wasn't working for him and sometimes you gotta do stuff for yourself.

Probably one of those things that goes like this: Ricky wants to quit, but his agent and friends say just wait til closer to the season and see if you still want too. He keeps waiting, waiting for that fire to kick in, that will to play, and it's just not there. He's looking at playing for free for a few games and starting "real" work-outs and still doesn't really want to play. It'd do or die time, and he chooses out. Makes sense why the timing is now, because now is the last real chance for him to get out before comitting too much too quit. If he went through training camp and preseason and quit then I'd question his motives.
He should have let someone know. Decent thing to do.

Wouldn't RB Steven Jackson taken #24 look good in a dolphin uniform right now? Dolphins picked 19th.

Saw a blurb on this on tv but Anthony Thomas would be perfect in Miami. Chicago gets a player or draft pick and unloads a pussy who won't play w/ a hurt finger and Miami can get a RB. And when both A-Train and Wanny fail all of Chicago can laugh their asses off.

it wasn't season ticket's it was single game ticket's.

the rumor of ricky getting caught for weed is true. i'm pretty sure he wasn't gonna get suspended for any game's but he would have gotten a 650k fine.
So... is there any chance that, well, you know, Belichick up and calls it quits? A fella can dream can't he?
