Monster Movies

There's nothing I like more then a good monster movie, like Predator, Relic, or Mimic. But now it seems like hollywood has stopped making them, and when they do make them, it's not like they used to. They rely too much on CGI and pansy out on the gore. Are there any monser movies coming out that look promising or older ones I might not know about? Because I'm getting to the point where I'm considering renting Phantoms and I don't want to let that happen.

I'm a big fan of all three of the new Gamera films. The third one (Iris) is delirously fun. Monsters are so subjective though. Do you include Vampires, Werewolfs, Mummies, Aliens, Witches, and human monster serial killers? Crap wasn't the beast in Beauty a monster (?), if so I prefer the Cocteau version.

Too many monster movies these days just lack imagination., usually falling into one of either three categories:

ALIEN clone (people trapped in a confined space with a rampaging monster)

PREDATOR clone (people being hunted by a rampaging monster in an open area)

SLASHER clone (rampaging monster just kills for the sake of killing)

That's why something like TREMORS or the new GAMERA trilogy stands out. They have more going on than just those 3 set blueprints.

I agree that a good monster movie is hard to find (monster being a physically unique creature as opposed to simply a person-regardless of the level of power he/she has- with monsterous intent).

The failing point IMO is a lack of character. What works in the best monster movies are the characters that interact (i.e. get eaten by) the creatures. Neat monsters, make-up, effects and a clever story are all very good but it's the characters that will really propel a decent monster movie from 'meh' to 'cool'. Think about some of the best of best the monster films like Them, JC's The Thing, Phantasm, Alien/Aliens, The Fly (Croneburg)the Dead Trilogy and the aformentioned Tremors. There's all sorts of good stuff but it's the characters that I end up recalling best.
