I just ordered Haute Tension. (NO SPOILERS!!!)

Tell me a bit about it, no details, just how it stacks up as a horror film.
I ordered the uncut PAL version, it has English dubbing, which I'm not a fan of, but I wasn't sure if the other version was uncut as it didn't explicitly state the fact.

Also ordered two great films I'd seen previously, The Beyond & Alphaville.

Good choice with Alphaville; bad choice with Haute Tension.

I saw the latter at BNAT and it was a terrible film, in fact, it's mockingly terrible, but it's not dull, which I suppose is a plus. If it's approached as comedy--albeit, the bottom of the barrel variety--then enjoyment may be found. My advice: go in with the lowest expectations humanly possible.

Ahhh...fuck!

I have NO expectations of this film, and w/ the exception of seeing it get a little love online, I've not spoiled myself w/ a single detail.

For my wallet's sake I hope it isn't the turd you see it as, after all, it has to at least be better than most American horror films released in the past few years...not that that's a difficult thing to manage.

Surely we must've seen different movies? The HAUTE TENSION I saw was fucking perfect, an intense as can be horror thriller that gave its audience a rather insulting kick in the collective balls by pulling a Shyamalan at the end. If not for the self-defeating ending this would be a 10/10 film.

Christ!

Like night & day on this thing!

Haute Tension was excellent, I'm totally in that camp. I had given up in thinking that a straight slasher could work with no defusing humour, no post-modern winks at the camera, just a crazy guy with sharp metal implements.

The less said about the ending, the better, but up until then it's a horror fan's wet dream. Nice and red, too. It's just a shame the only uncut version at the moment on has that crappy dub and no subs. Dammit! While the subbed version is missing a hefty 23 seconds of the red stuff.

EDIT: Oh, and my full opinion (no spoilers) is here: http://www.livejournal.com/users/mrstroppy/124735.html

The first 75 minutes of the movie is a great, intense old-school slasher type flick.

The end, though... isn't.

I'm in the same boat as you Jackknife, I've heard all these great things about the flick, but really haven't spoiled any details for myself. I picked up a bootleg on dvd a week or so ago at a horror convention, but haven't watched it yet. Mines from some Korean (I believe) dvd that's in French with either English or Korean subtitles. Wonder if that means its cut alot.

If it's indeed from the Korean DVD, 30 seconds of gore have been trimmed from that release. I own the French DVD which has no subs but you can download subtitles and play them with the film using VOBsub. Still the best way to watch the film until the eventual, hopefully uncut US disc arrives in a year or so.

Yeah, it's a burn of the Korean dvd. 30 seconds....I can live with that until the US disc. And at least it has english subs....though I'll have to see how good the translation is. I remember my first Ringu bootleg I ever got. My god was that translation bad.

**SPOILERLY TYPE COMMENT**

The ending killed the entire movie for me; the effects were all nicely done, but when you have an ending such as that, it ruins everything before it, therefore making the movie a waste of my time. Had the film had the nerve to follow through with what it introduced, then we would've had something, but sadly, we don't.

One more vote in favour of Haute Tension.

Loved it.
