Apparently, one of the outfielders from our Friday night softball team was killed on Saturday in a motorcycle accident. Steve and I always teased him because he was one of those guys who'd pop up the ball 8 out of every 10 at bats and hit two home runs with the others. I also chided him for always insisting on using my Orange Crush or Techfire Rage bats and never bringing his own but he always good to talk to about movies and he was a regular CHUD reader.

Apparently, he was on his bike and got cut off and impacted the passenger side of a car that abruptly turned. His bike exploded. 27 years old.

Stuff like this is just plain hideous. We were driving home on a 7 hour trip from South Florida and the email with the news was the first thing I read. Of course, I was on pins and needles the whole way.

I wasn't really close with him, but it's just sad and sickening and now I feel silly for giving him so much hell.

If for some freak of chance an aquaintence of Jimmy's didn't know the bad news, here it is.

Yeah, I'm gonna miss Jimmy. He also took some of the heat away from my poor performance. Guy was 27, and I haven't felt right all day after hearing about it.

Sorry to hear about this.

Just last month, a longtime colleague of my parents who served on the Newton County school board also died in a freak motorcycle accident. These kinds of things are just rotten.

From the AJC:

"Police also are investigating a two-vehicle crash that killed a motorcyclist in Buford about 6:25 p.m. Saturday. A Nissan Sentra traveling on Gravel Springs Road struck the motorcyclist while trying to turn left on Cross Road. The driver of the motorcycle, James Taft, 27, of Sugar Hill, died at the scene, police said.
The driver of the Nissan, John Smith, 19, of Lawrenceville, suffered minor injuries.

Police are expected to charge Smith with misdemeanor vehicular homicide because the crash was caused by Smith's traffic violation, Huggins said."

Sucks to hear about things like this, even if you were not close to the guy it's still a hard thing to deal with.

Jesus christ. I didn't know the guy, but my condolences to you guys and especially his loved ones. 27's way, way, way too young.
