I know his films are an acquired taste, but when he manages to pull off the right combination of atmospheric gothic melodrama, with euro trash sleave, I just eat this stuff up. Outside the Daninsky films very few have made it to dvd in any legible form, which doesn't leave the casual viewer a chance to witness them in their dacadent glory.
The Anchor Bay discs are gorgeous (of course) and WEREWOLF SHADOW is my favorite of all the Klimovsky (sp) flix. Reprasing DR. JEKYLL AND THE WEREWOLF came with much more appreciation and information on the Mondo Macabro disc than on the previous tapes.
Films I would like to see make their way onto disc read like a whats what of prerequisite stuff that the layman should see to really gain a better understanding.
BEAST WITH THE MAGIC SWORD - Daninsky travels to fuedal Japan to find a cure for his malacy, running a
foot with treachery and sorcery. The fight scene with the tiger in a real treat here.
HUNCHBACK OF THE MORGUE - has Naschy at his sympathetic best playing a quasimodo type funeralary henchman that steals bodies for mad experiments of lovecraftian reanimation. This one has a nice Burke and Hare quility to it and Naschy's love interest adds some fine erotisism and sentiment mix.
HOWL OF THE DEVIL - This is my personal fave managing somehow to tie together a serial killer plot thread with the anti-christ, while Naschy exists in various classic monster guises through the imagination of a neglected child. Brillant!
DRACULA'S GREAT LOVE - perhaps the most erotic take on the ole' count and Nashy really shines in his best performance role. Dying to see a half way descent print of this little gem.
Not much into Fred Olen Ray's stuff and will NOT rent from COCKBUSTERS so I'll have to wait elsewhere for TOMB OF A WOLFMAN. But the one i'm really wanting to see is MUCHA SANGRE.
