The O'Foy Factor: Uwe Boll Interview Analysis

ORIGINAL INTERVIEW

Stepping into the No Win Zone: Dr. Uwe Boll on his upcoming BLOODRAYNE movie starring T3's Kristanna Loken.

PART ONE:

Quote:
Question - "I'd like to know if she'll have a love interest in the film. The obvious kick butt attitude will be cool ,but if there was that someone that could break the wall she has up it would be cool to see the lighter passionate side of Rayne in the film? "

uwe - There is one
Well, we know what the first movie killer is going to be. Love interests in action movies almost always drag the proceedings down, especially when the hero is a heroine. Also, kinda odd this would be the very first question asked.

Quote:
Question - Now, this film is suppost to take place in 1800 century, and is said to be a prequel to the game. And in the movie taken straight from the game, she has to get these Talisman organs and also get's the eye in her head. If this is true, how does she lose the eye and have no memory of these Talisman organs in BloodRayne and get's them again? Or is the film also in it's own parallel reality to the game?

uwe - Between the game and the movie are 240 years. The Talisman situation get cleared in between
Why do filmmakers making movies based on video games seem so hellbent on making their film versions a prequel to the game. If someone made a Pac-Man movie do they think we give a crap how or why he became a chronic overeater forever doomed to wander a fruit-filled maze haunted by ghosts? Build the movie from the game and not vice versa.

Quote:
Question - Nightwish did the music for Alone in the Dark, who is going to be doing the music to BloodRayne and will you be directing the music video for it?

uwe - HOPEFULLY
Who the hell is Nightwish and are they at least as good as Night Ranger?

Quote:
Question - can you get Nigthwishes autograph or lead me to someone who could for my friend Tom.

uwe - WOLFGANG HEROLD helps you with that. He is copied on that email
Asking for autographs in the middle of an interview and even printing the damn request... I can hear jounalism teachers everywhere sobbing right now.

Quote:
Question - Have you ever actually played bloodrayne?

uwe - YES
Jesus, I'd hope so.

Quote:
Question - What made the film be set in Romania in the late 1800's?

uwe - Vampires are coming from Transilvania. I wanna work realistic and not do another HERO MOVIE like CATWOMAN etc.
As much as we rag on Boll at least he has enough sense to know that CATWOMAN sucked. Although, preaching realism regarding a movie about vampires based on a video game gives me bad flashbacks to Devlin/Emmerich talking about wanting to make their GODZILLA more realistic. We all know how that turned out.

Quote:
Question - Why are 90% of your films game liscenses?

uwe - I like it
The other 10% need the likes of Casper Van Dien and Michael Pare to even get funding so I can see why he prefers video game movies.

Quote:
Question - What other games are you interested in making, have you played the following :

Painkiller?

uwe - NO

Splinter Cell?

uwe - NO

Doom?

uwe - YES

Half-life/Half-life 2?

uwe - YES

Grand Theft Auto?

uwe - YES GREAT

Dark Fall?

uwe - NO

The Journal?

uwe - NO

Legacy of Kain?

uwe - YES

Midnight Nowhere?

uwe - NO

Nosferatu?

uwe - NO
I'd have also asked about Dig Dug, Pooyan, E.T. for the Atari 2600, Superman for the N64, and Super Mario Kart but that's just me. I do give Boll credit for acknowledging the greatness of GTA but I hope he doesn't ever expect Rockstar to return his calls.

Quote:
Question - Any idea of who you want to play Kagan?

uwe - Ben Kingsley is doing it
Is this a set in stone fact? Have contracts been signed? Between this and THUNDERBIRDS I'm beginning to wonder if Mr. Kingsley is deep in debt to some bookies or something.

Quote:
Question - Who is doing the effects for BloodRayne?

uwe - Olaf Ittenbach SFX
Isn't that Germany's most popular brand of popcorn?

Quote:
Question - Who is doing the cgi for BloodRayne?

uwe - Doug Oddy, Toybox and UPSTART
No clue.

Quote:
Question - When BloodRayne is doing some of her moves, are they going to be done with a cgi BloodRayne or is wire work going to be used?

uwe - WIRE WORK
Between the casting of Loken and this bit of news that makes two things he's gotten right so far. There may actually be hope afterall.

Quote:
Question - Any Matrix, Bullet time, or Turn Table effects? And how are they going to be done?

uwe - NO. We do other things
I have to resist the urge to start twistimg my nipples just thinking of the possibilities.

PART TWO:

Quote:
Question - Any creatures in BloodRayne? Any from the game making it to the movie? Like the Daemites or Hedrox?

uwe - NO. ONLY VAMPIREs
Duh. The budget is only $15 million and that's before they even pay Ben Kingsley. I'm amazed they can even afford to make a BLOODRAYNE movie for that money.

Quote:
Question - How the hell did you get Kristanna Loken? Not only is she beautiful and famous for T3, but she is on the majority of every Fan's site thread on who should play BloodRayne. How did you get her?

uwe - She was our first choice and she liked the script and allways wanted to do a Vampire movie
Translation: We originally wanted Natalie Portman, Jessica Biel, or Keira Knightley but none of them would even acknowledge our existence. Still, Loken is probably the best possible choice for the role.

Quote:
Question - Has she played the game?

uwe - YES
Why does Boll keep shouting his answers? Someone tell him he isn't competing on a quiz show.

Quote:
Question - Any more stars in the film?

uwe - Michelle Rodriguez from SWAT and RESIDENT EVIL. We have a great cast!
No Uwe, he asked you if there were any more stars in the film. Michelle Rodriguez does not count.

Quote:
Question - Since Will Sanderson has been in all your resent films, is he doing to be in this one?

uwe - YES. He plays an EVIL THRALL
Having never played the video game I am going to assume that a THRALL is one of the evil vampires and not Boll mispronouncing TROLL.

Quote:
Question - Here is a Question that many of the fan's are wondering. In the game, BloodRayne need's to find three Talisman organs: a heart, an eye and a rib wrought from a ancestor vampire named Beliar. And she get's the eye in her head later. This all takes place in 1938 I believe.

uwe - WE ARE USING THIS NOW
Does that response mean that what he asked is already in the script or that Boll did not know any of this until just this moment, thought it sounded like a great idea, and is preparing to tell the screenwriter to add it to the script immediately?

Quote:
Question - How much CGI is going to be used? Is it going to be the show like in film's like I, Robot, Matrix, ect. Or is it only going to be used if there is no other way?

uwe - CORRECT. Only if we need it
More like only if they can afford it. I wonder how much CGI there would have been in I, ROBOT or THE MATRIX if it only had a $15 million budget? Kind of a dumb question there.

Quote:
Question - Will the film be PG-13, R, NC-17 or the possible Unrated?

uwe - R
Three smart decisions on Boll's part. I'm frightened.

Quote:
Question - While there be a possible Un-rate edition for House of the Dead that we heard about?

uwe - YES. Its coming out in GERMANY right now
WOOHOO!!! Screw that 3-disc HELLBOY director's cut. I know what I really want for Christmas. I wonder if the HOTD unrated cut is the version with a plot?

Quote:
Question - Since in other interviews you said that the actor for BloodRayne must be able to be fully nude, how much of Kristanna Loken is going to be "exposed"?

uwe - YOU WILL SEE
Translation: We're still negotiating with her over that one. Don't get you hopes up.

Quote:
Question - I would really like to interview Kristanna, she is my favorite actress to date and I will promise her a detailed interview. Please suggest it to her or help me get in contact with her agent for a future possibility?

uwe - WRITE ME YOUR QuestionS. She will answer from my computer
There are quite a few dirty jokes we could all make here but I won't seeing as how that would require me to believe that he might actually be getting some from Kristanna, which I do not. The brief Milla Jovovich/Luc Besson marriage pretty much constituted this generation's miracle in that department.

Quote:
Question - what rating are you aiming at? R18+ or something a little more teen friendly?

uwe - R RATING in USA
Ummm... you already asked him that, dude.

Quote:
Question - on the same note will there be any nudity in the film? to be more specific, will the terminatrix expose some flesh?

uwe - YES
Another repeater. Did the Auto Interviewer 5000 robot start malfunctioning?

Quote:
Question - Are you going to go for a more Campy (like HOTD) feel or are you gonna go down the path of generic actioneer with witty oneliners? or is there a chance, this film might be alittle bit more serious?

uwe - THE FILM IS WRITTEN By a great writer and will be dark, creepy and serious
Wait, HOUSE OF THE DEAD was INTENTIONALLY campy? Amd why did he start off with all caps for THE FILM IS WRITTEN and then went back to normal type? Was he afraid of emphasizing someone's else credit for the film's potential success or just concerned with not getting people's hope up that it will actually be dark, creepy, and serious?

Quote:
Question - When the hell is alone in the dark coming out in Australia?

uwe - Spring next year
When the hell is ALONE IN THE DARK coming out anywhere?

Quote:
Question - will there be any video game footage and bullet time sequences in this film?

uwe - NO
Four! Four smart decisions by Uwe Boll! (insert thunderclap, lightning flash, and cackling by The Count)

Quote:
Question - Have you played the game Bloodrayne? Why the complete change in concept (honestly, vampire femme fatale vs. nazis is a pretty simple, straightforward premise the mainstream can dig)?

uwe - I played the game and I wanna tell in the first part of the franchise how she became BLOODRAYNE
Did the interviewer just lap himself and start over?

Quote:
Question - Who did the sets for HOUSE OF THE DEAD? Those were aces.

uwe - TINK
It's nice to see that the Telletubbies are adopting more adult sounding names and branching out into other directions with their careers.

Quote:
Question - Do you worry about being typecast as a "video game movie" director?

uwe - NO
Too late. I mean waaaaaaaaaaay too late!

There you go, folks. I report, you decide. Now back to my painkillers.

Good God, Foy, that interview must have been conducted while both parties were high on weed. The transcript is damn near unreadable. Why are people giving Uwe money?

Olaf Ittenbach is the director of a couple notoriously crappy German splatter flicks like LEGION OF THE DEAD (which is also out in the US), RIVERPLAY, BLACK PAST and PREMUTOS. I bet Uwe will bond with him immediately. They have a lot in common!

OH DEAR GOD THAT INTERVIEW SUCKED.

Was it done by a 15 year old?
And say good bye to Kristanna and Ben's careers. Cause Mr. Boll just destroyed them.

Did the reviewer punch Boll? I would of if he kelp shouting one word answers at me.

House of the Dead was terrible. How can people just hand over that much money to Uwe Boll who puts out such crap?

You and pretty much everyone else forget that HOUSE OF THE DEAD was not Boll's first film. He made a lot of other direct to video stuff in the US and a few theatrical movies in Germany beforhand. So it's not like he's only HOUSE in his portfolio.

Another thing that people seem to have decided to ignore is that moviemaking is a BUSINESS. It's about money and not about artistic achievements. What Boll makes are video game flicks. He can crank them out on the cheap ($10 million is cheap) and they automatically make their investment back through foreign sales and home video even if the film bombs theatrically. HOUSE OF THE DEAD, despite all the hate it deservedly gets, has been a financial success. When Boll walks into a meeting nobody will ask "Oh, how did the internet fan community rate the film?" or "Did you make a great, innovative movie?" They see he is capeable of making them a profit and that's all that counts.
We acknowledge this, Wetbones. We just don't like it. Thus, the frustration on our part. I know you understand.

Amen to that. Roger Corman was responsible for those classic Vincent Price/Poe movies in the sixties as well as really innovative stuff like Little Shop of Horrors and Dementia 13, but AIP was built on things like Teenage Caveman and Viking Women and the Sea Serpent, not art.

That interview is one of the funniest things I have read in a long time. It looks like we might have another House of the Dead on our hands.
Man what a stupid interview.

Hell Alone in the Dark looks cheap. I mean really cheap. The clip I saw featured a bad creature animated poorly. It was the first time I couldn't tell if an effect was in the foreground or background. But Bolls ineptness at the camera isn't what irks me, it's that he has two very bad traits.

1) Putting the blame on others and unprofessional: As the director of House of the Dead he blamed everyone but himself for HotD in an open letter on the Alone in the Dark website, a site which should only be meant for the news and media of Alone in the Dark, granted I have no interest in the film. But how'd you like it if someone like Spielberg wrote an open letter to fans about A.I. or Hook? You can't win in that scenario, you're saying that the people should shut up and like your movie cause you think it's great. The film was taken apart and dissected like a lab project in some instances. It's BAD.

2) Boasting: Also contained is that open letter to fans are remarks regarding Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez. Uwe Boll, I don't care HOW many films he made before House of the Dead does NOT show any sign of being on the same par as QT and/or RR. That's ludicrous. Those men, and I know some people don't like OUTIM but they both care deeply about their films and take care in what they do. They were born around film, they were raised around film. They can't go on without film, and you swagger in like some fucking jerk with a $10 million dollar film that is like a god damn mish mash of ideas done better a thousand fold in other films. HotD has action that's unlike QT and RR. Quinten Tarantino staged that whole Blue Leaves fight for weeks. He knew what he wanted, he got what he wanted. The scene flows around the room and due to the previous scene you have a sense of geography in the whole room the whole time. HotD has a scene in a graveyard where continuity has no effect on the cast or their placement. Their weapons change, they're placement changes. It's inconsistent to the point of insanity. Rodriguez had better action in SPY KIDS, but in his OUTIM trilogy he had many fight scenes staged better, Desperado has the best example with the shoot out in the bar. Not to mention that Rodriguez achieved more with a lesser budget and QT won an Oscar, won the Palme d'or, turned a $8 million dollar flick into a $107,928,762 flick that made Miramax a big player.

And is a better interviewer I might add.

NIGHTWISH IS GOTH AS FUCK, BRAH!
Funny to see that for bad directors, people send bad interviewers. I bet they got along just fine...

I'm not surprised to see some link between Boll and Ittenbach. With Legion of the Dead, Ittenbach used to be Uwe's predecessor here on the Corner.
You guys are looking at this all all all wrong.

Check it. Uwe has the ability to get cash for darn near anything. He's SOMEHOW talking b-list actors into starring in z-grade movies.

On top of that he's balls out INSANE.

Now, if we can just get him some skills behind the camera we could have some of the most brilliant film making of all time!!!!!!!!!!!111onefourninealpha

For the love of god he's giving us what T3 didn't....

He's earned a fan for that alone IMO.

They should just give Takashi Miike those $10-15 and let him do what he wants with them. Hell, Miike could shoot all the films Boll has coming up in six months and you can bet a few of them would be masterpieces.

But at least Uwe Boll hasn't been a guest judge on AMERICAN IDOL yet. He also hasn't said that Brittney Spears is the greatest pop artist of our time. QT still wins, though.

Woah.

Stop.

Steryotyped as a videogame director? If I was Uwe, I would try and become
sterotyped as ANY kind of director.

And he hated Resident Evil so badly, I remember he slammed just about everything about it
and now he seems PROUD to have an actress from Resident Evil?

By the way I still wake up and laugh heartily in the middle of the night when i think about his rant. priceless.

SUBJECT: Please Cease and Desist

Mr. Butane,

It has come to our attention than a Mr. Foywonder has posted a topic here in your Message Board that was entitled "The O' Foy Factor." The installment was a breakdown of an interview conducted with "House Of The Dead tm" director Uwe Boll. We do not have any problem with you slandering Mr. Boll, since everything in the article seemed accurate. However we must ask you to cease and desist from any idea you may entertain that Mr. Foywonder should make "The O'Foy Factor" a one time shot deal. We are asking that you promote this to a regular feature, since he is the balls.

Sincerely,

Okay, a few things.

Nightwish is actually an extremely talented band. Yeah, they could be considered 'goth metal' but they're several steps above most bands of that genre. Very operatic, lots of complex musical structure. That being said, I have NO FUCKING CLUE as to why they'd want to associate themselves with Boll. Maybe they weren't aware of who he is, they're Finnish.

Just wrote the details of Bloodrayne as reported by the AP into a story for tomorrow. The AP story claims they're giving him FORTY-SEVEN MILLION to make this. Time to invest in canned food and shotgun shells, because surely the world will end soon.

Also, 1800's Romania? Um...uh...the entire draw of the game was the very simple pitch of: VAMPIRES VS. NAZIS. I mean, that's just a sure-bet. So, take the Nazis away, shoot and period vampire movie in Romania and you have....Full Moon Production. Yes, my theory is that Uwe Boll is actually hatching a secret plot to resurrect the Subspecies series. Fuck the game, he just wants to get Charlie Spradling naked.

And, for the record, NO ONE IS BETTER THAN NIGHT RANGER.

Quote:

I saw that too online a few hours ago and have a hard time believing it to be true. From $15 to $47 million is quite a jump. Unless Kristanna Loken spends 80% of the movie running around buck naked I have a hard time believing the movie will ever make its money back and even then its questionable.

Quote:
Yes, my theory is that Uwe Boll is actually hatching a secret plot to resurrect the Subspecies series. Fuck the game, he just wants to get Charlie Spradling naked.
The only problem with that theory is that Charlie Spradling never appeared in a SUBSPECIES movie and history has shown that you don't have to go that above and beyond to get her naked in a movie anyways. Her gravity defying cleavage was on display in two awful Charles Band flicks, the atrocious PUPPET MASTER 2 and the dismal MERIDIAN aka The Sherilyn Fenn fucks a werewolf movie. She managed to remain fully clothed for the duration of her bit part in BAD CHANNELS and frankly there's no amount of nudity that could have made that film even remotely watchable. Then after fleeing Full Moon she would go on to pop her top as a stripper being seduced by vampiric Scott Valentine (and he was still a better vampire then what's his face in VAN HELSING) in some horror flick I can't remember the title of and then she really stretched her acting skills by giving us a look at her rear in MIRROR MIRROR. Scary that I know this off the top of my head.

This makes me curious as to how Megan Ward was able to make so many movies for Charles Band without ever going nude. That's almost unheard of.

But getting back on the subject at hand, Boll may be looking to resurrect the SUBSPECIES franchise because with $47 million he can give us plenty of those finger demons. I'll never forget all the promotion the first SUBSPECIES got based around the fact that one of the vampires could snap his fingers off and grow them into little demons. Then the movie comes out and there like 60 seconds of that and the concept is abandoned for the rest of the franchise. If you can't afford the fx for something then you shouldn't build a movie around it.

But if the budget is actually $47 million then I am truly looking forward to BLOODRAYNE. We've seen the nonsensical camera tricks this guy has done on the cheap now imagine what he'll do with some actually money at his disposal, emphasis on "disposal". Either he's finally going to make a movie worth a damn or it's going to be Albert Pyun's wet dream come to life.

Question - Mr. Boll, why did you put a hex on my gall bladder?

uwe - WHAT IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE YOUR LIVER! FUKING WICHDOCTORS!

Question - Why is it that the American soundtrack for House of the Dead didn't include any songs from the movie itself?

uwe - WHAT?

Question - Must you keep shouting your answers?

uwe - SORY IAN DEF.

Question - Was that your answer or are you just pushing computer keys at random again?

uwe - JFWPUIA FM< TI)F JFG:Z

Question - Don't you think you would be better served to just go out and make a good movie instead of making a terrible movie and then posting a rambling insane rant online comparing yourself to much better filmmakers and demanding respect?

uwe - HAVE YOU SEEN THAT NEW PROMO TRAILER FOR Alone in the dark? SEE HOW I SHOT THAT gun battle? You never saw anything like that in Citizen Kane. You always here about the great cinomatic inovator that Orson Welles was but he NEVER DID ANYTHING LIKE THAT?

Question - You're comparing yourself to Orson Wel... Nevermind. I'm not even going to bother. So, what about Night Ranger? Are you better than Night Ranger?

uwe - I DO NOT MAKE COMIC BOOK MOVIES

Question - Okay. Why don't I just ask the question everyone wants to ask. Who the hell keeps funding your movies?

uwe - JESUS

Question - Jesus Christ bankrolls your films?

uwe - THE FACT THAT I KEEP GETTING FUNDING IS A MIRACLE SO I MIGHT AS WELL GIVE CREDIT TO THE LORD.

Question - Good point. Thanks for your time, Dr. Boll.

That new promo trailer for ALONE IN THE DARK is mindblowing. I think it looks a bit better than the HOUSE OF THE DEAD trailer because at least this time you can see what is going on for about half the running time. But that ROARING CGI TENTACLE was fucking pathetic and everyone knows that I adore tentacles. Is that thing in the games or did Uwe boll this up himself? I almost choked during the nu metal shootout where they fire white lines at wooden boxes for no discernible reason. Gold. If this would premiere on the sci-fi channel I could live with it but it looks like Uwe plans to put it out on a couple thousand screens and that's just killing me. Why does this go theatrical and DINOCROC doesn't?

Start working the phones and pulling the strings, Butane. This could be bigger than Ali vs. Foreman, King Kong vs. Godzilla, and Franken vs. O'Reilly! But given Boll's love for this website I have a hard time imagining he'd go for it.
