The Manson Family

It's no secret that I think MY SWEET SATAN is one of the most disturbing films every put on celluloid and the fact that it's a short, works as a duel gut wrench.

To say his personal life has been a struggle all through the 15 years of making THE MANSON FAMILY is like saying Coltrane is "another" a saxophonist, and yet there was no compromise ever while he barely scrapped to survive (not to feel sorry, but that's another story). Very few filmakers earn the mantra of being truely independent, yet Van Bebber is a enigma of excessive dementia.

I haven't seen DEAD BEAT AT DAWN work its way onto IFC lately?

I don't prejudge movies and haven't seen THE MANSON FAMILY, but can tell you that if nothing else it will serve the purpose of what Horror very rarely ever does to me anymore. DISTURB. Halloween can't get here soon enough..

Jim Van Bebber is a talented filmmaker that hasn't broken out of the cheapie indie market yet...too bad, I'd love to see what he can do on a large budget.

He's one of those weird circle of filmmakers that is on horror movie panels, interviewed on DVD liner notes or magazines, offers his critical opinion on movies....basically based on ONE complete movie (well, now 2 if you count The Manson Family) and some short movies.

I've been waiting for this movie for 10 long years, and I can't wait to pick it up.

I don't know if LARGE budget is what I'd want to see (and I don't think we'll have to worry about that anytime soon), but would like to see him get his shit semi together so it doesn't take 15 fuckin' years to finish a film.

It's almost a double edged sword with him. His inner demons are so fully emblazoned on masterpieces like MY SWEET SATAN, that as an selfish cinephile I almost don't want things to get that much better for him. Then I think of what an amazing talent he is and feel guilty for feeling that way.
