Videodrome: The Criterion Collection August 31

Just found out about this release didn't know it was coming. I have the Naked Lunch Criterion as well. Maybe they'll release The Fly too.

It says on the website it is the unrated version. Will this be any different than the existing DVD anyone know?

Videodrome: David Cronenberg's Videodrome will be the latest addition to the Criterion Collection (Spine # 248) this August. This director-approved full-length uncut/unrated 2-disc set will be presented in a new 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer along with a Dolby Digital 1.0 Mono audio track. Extras will include audio commentaries (with director David Cronenberg, actors James Woods and Deborah Harry, and director of photography Mark Irwin), the ”Camera” short film, a new 30-minute featurette (“Forging the New Flesh”), a 26-minute roundtable discussion from 1982 (“Fear on Film”), a complete/unedited faux Japanese AV feature of “Samurai Dreams," trailers, a promotional featurette, stills galleries, and essays.

I normally don't like paying the four-thousand dollars crieterion discs cost. But I'll get this.

Good question. I have no answer. The existing Universal DVD is the R-rated theatrical cut. There was a PAL LD version billed as "unrated", but that was just the R-rated North American version (some of the more explicit scenes were trimmed for the original UK release, which, IIRC, happened around the time of the Video Recordings Act/'video nasties" era).

I also don't know if there's a definite "unrated cut" in existence. However, as Tim Lucas' VD special in Video Watchdog noted, there were quite a few alternate takes and deleted scenes, some of which were inserted into in the US TV edit to help fill the gaps in the running time caused by trimming the gore (there's one in particular, in which Barry Convex explains the origin of the Videodrome technology, that probably should've been left in for the sake of storytelling clarity). None of the promotional material says that the film has been re-edited for the Criterion set, but it'd be interesting to know if those have been added to the package in some way.

As a Cronenberg junkie, I'm drooling for this one. I love the cover art too with James Woods crawling inside of the tv set. We can only pray for a Criterion edition of the Fly.

Actually, the US R1 DVD has the unrated version and is fully uncut. Every other country, Australia, all of Europe, for some reason got the R rated version on DVD. The Criterion DVD will have the same version that is/was available in the US before but of course jam-packed with their usual amount of awesome extras.

Damn, there goes my memory. Watching it, I could've sworn the needle-sex scene on the R1 DVD was shorter. Thanks, Wetbones.

Wetbones comes through again with his vast knowledge of everything DVD. Oh well, Criterion does have the best extras. Is the version that's out now Anamorphic?
SAMURAI DREAMS promo?? Now there's an extra I never thought would have existed. I can't wait to squirm/masturbate.

This I must buy. No question about it. I knew there was a reason that I had not yet bought any version of Videodrome, this is it.
Given that Cronenburgs name is on it and that I grew up with this movie I will own it

is there a pic of the DVD case art???

I hope they go with the poster art....but I seem to recall the face in the t.v. as the cover

but then again....I ramble

P.S.

I NEVER liked Blondie in the movie....she just didn't look like she was into it

I love Blondie, don't get me wrong. It is just that little nit pick that always itched me in the place that I cannot scratch

then again....ramble

Holy Shit!!

That has got to be the coolest horror movie case ever.
Damn, and I'm not going to be able to afford this for a few months, probably not until 2005.
Excellent packaging. I'm totally sold now. Being a self proclaimed Criterion whore, this will sit nicely alongside Hard Boiled, the Killer, and Sid and Nancy and my others.
no surround sound track? what the hell?
I prefer it if older movies have their original audio on a mono track. I'm a home theater enthusiast, but it just doesn't seem right to hear classics like 'Dawn of the Dead' in DTS. Criterion comes through on the packaging and the extras once again. Wow. I forgot that this DVD was coming out next week.
I don't mind remixes that much, AS LONG as they keep the original elements, which they didn't with JAWS and THE TERMINATOR on DVD. But watching SUSPIRIA in DTS ES is just awesome.

It's all in the engineering. Sometimes they get it right and others just don't work. The Day of the Dead mix barely changed things at all and used the surrounds to little effect. Done right it could have sounded great.
Is it me, or is the DVD case shaped as a VHS tape. Oh, the delicious irony!

Get paid tomorrow. Guess what I'm getting?
Not VHS - Beta!
Just picked it up...the first thing I noticed (other than the great packaging) was how clean the transfer is. Criterion did a beautiful job. While the mix is mono its still clean and you can hear everything thats going on.

I hadn't seen the movie in almost 7 years and its honestly gotten better with all the reality TV thats out there now. I wonder what channel they would choose to air Videodrome on nowadays? All of them? Or just Fox

I love Cronenberg commentaries, so thats next on the list. The short film on the second disc looks interesting. This disc is gonna keep me entertained for days. Oh, and the booklet they included with it is great as with most Criterions.

BTW, its only $27 bucks at most places...not that ridiculous for a 2-disc Criterion.

Those goddamned assholes at Best Buy didn't get a SINGLE COPY in today. Oh, sure, they got 20 bajiliion "Passions" but couldn't even get a single case of Videodrome in.

They said the other Best Buy had four copies in. That's on the other side of town about an hour drive since Orlando traffic is the fucking pits.

So I just ordered my copy off of Deep Discount DVD. I was hoping to curl up to a new movie today, but now I have to wait three more days.

God, I hate Best Buy.
I thought this was a great movie, but not one I would watch unless I was showing it to someone that hasn't seen it. Normally I wouldn't purchase the DVD in this case, and if I did I would get a cheap used copy somewhere. But in this case of the works done to this DVD, I'm sure as shit getting that DVD.

Awesome!
I already have the old version, but that case alone sealed the deal. This will be mine.

Videodrome was one of the movies my dad introduced me to at a very young age, along with The Terminator. That had a bit of an effect on me. Just a bit.

I went to Best Buy on my lunch break and they didn't have it either. Those pig-fuckers must hate Cronenberg because the same thing happened to me with the new edition of Rabid that came out a while back.

I did find it at Media Play though, and I must say that DVD releases like this one are the reason that I collect DVDs in the first place. To say that I'm impressed would be a gross understatement. The packaging is absolutely wonderful (under the slip case it looks like a fucking Beta tape, could it possibly be any cooler than that? Nope), a 40 page booklet, extras out the ass. Most other movie companies should sit down and think very hard about the products they produce because Criterion discs are truely a labor of love, created by true film disciples, that make most other so-called special editions look like shit in comparison. I honestly sat in my car for five minutes after buying it, gazing at the packaging in awe.

Long live the new flesh (and the Criterion Collection).

I think the only Criterion I have EVER seen at Best Buy was The Rock....which somehow makes sense.

All my Cronenberg Criterions (Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Videodrome) have been purchased at Barnes and Noble or online. Actually, most of my Criterions have been purchased in one of those two places. Along with Videodrome I picked up Notorious and Rebecca, two Criterions that just went OOP.

Best Buy is good for the "mainstream" movies...anything else I recommend the large bookstores.

Anyway, just watched the new documentary on the second disc. Very informative. This might be the only movie I've heard of that went into production without a final script and turned out to be a great movie.

My search for the Criterion Naked Lunch DVD was met with snickers and directions to the adult section at the Best Buy and Media Play in my town. There wasn't one damn copy on the shelves. I ordered Videodrome from Amazon because I don't think they'll be getting any of that one either. Thanks for the quick review, M.I.A.

I had to go to two Best Buys before I finally found it. My God the packaging on this puppy is brilliant. The booklet is very informative and a great read. I won't have time to watch it for a few days due to a heavier than usual work load and being out of town. Damn the luck. I should have taken a vacation day for this one.
hey Floyd, you get it from the Best Buy on Butterfield? I saw it there today... didnt pick it up though, i have it on order at Amazon... picked up some cd's and some used dvds nearby though.

the packaging looked awesome and i havent seen the movie in a long time so i cant wait to re-visit it when it arrives

Butterfield was the first place I went but it was sold out by the time I got there. I got in late from Michigan. I figured you were one of the bastards that had bought it. I then trekked over to the Schaumburg BB and they had a couple.
we should've talked beforehand..i go to that best buy every tuesday at noon...i could've hid a copy for ya!

My Best Buy is actually pretty good about getting in Criterions (they had the three disc "Scenes from a Marriage" which surprised me) and they regularly carry the "Fear and Loathing" disc, so I was certain they would have Videodrome. No luck. The local Barnes and Noble which also gets a lot of Criterions in didn't have any either!

That's the problem with Orlando. There are a bunch of shopping hubs in the city but they are all like 30 minutes away from each other with like no other stores in between them. So if the shopping center by you doesn't have what you're looking for you have to run around town trying to find it.
Damn man, that sucks. I live in dead center NJ so I have 3 malls, 5 bookstores and countless independent DVD sale places within 15 miles of each other. It sucks sometimes but it also comes in handy since your almost guranteed to find the DVD somewhere.
Just got an email from Movietyme. My Videodrome has been dispatched!!! One of my favorite movies of all time.

Why don't you guys order your dvd's over the net? Or is it that you wanted it on the day of release?
I wanted it the first day of release so I could write a review for the school newspaper I am currently freelancing for. No such luck. I'm planning on writing a review for the new "Rounders" disc next week, though.
Certain websites actually ship the merchandise before the street date so it arrives on the day its released. I've made several purchases at DVDPlanet where this has happened.
