ALFIE discussion

This is the update/remake of the 1966 Brit film starring Michael Caine.

Quote:
This is the story of Alfie, a sexually prolific Englishman living in New York City, who prides himself on his neverending ability to carry on affairs and one-night stands with several women at once and whom the audience gets to know via the use of scenes that "break the fourth wall", as Alfie talks directly to us. Alfie's care-free days threaten to come to an end, however, when one of his latest girlfriends gets pregnant... will the life of the ultimate playboy cad change now that parenthood potentially looms in his future?
The film opens October 22nd.

I'll take dibs on Sienna Miller, thank you! (photos from Maxim here)

This is really quite the perfect role for Law and the film should go over well with the ladies.

I don't like AICN, but one of their readers sent in a review from an early screening that compares and contrasts the Jude Law version with the original Michael Caine version. Based on this review, it doesn't seem like something I'd dig.

The trailer looks like it could be a lot of fun -- I think this is a perfect role for Jude Law -- primarily because this is how I envision him as being in real life. I don't know if I'll see this in the theater, we'll see what kind of reviews it gets.

That trailer leaves me cold. I really think that this movie only made sense forty years ago - it was a fable about responsibility crashing into the carefree promiscuity of the 60s. Today's society just doesn't have the same attitudes towards casual sex, pregnancy and marriage. Without that era-specific subtext, it just looks like a rather bland comedy-drama. Bizarrely, it's reminding me of The Stepford Wives. Just by taking it out of its cultural and social birthplace, you neuter the point behind the whole thing.

And much as I like Jude Law as an actor, his to-camera stuff doesn't seem to have even half the charisma of Caine.
