Question about the R5 DVD of Vincenzo Natali's NOTHING...

I was curious if anyone else has picked this up yet - there's a very strange issue with my disc and I'd like to compare notes if possible. The image seems to have been shifted up unnaturally high on the screen - the letterboxing at the bottom looks oversized (about 1.5x the size of normal 2.35:1 letterboxing), while the letterboxing at the top is unnaturally thin (according to the package, the image should be 2.35:1). The image doesn't seemed cropped, just... out of place on the screen. I've emailed the shop I purchased the disc from, but haven't heard back and am not sure they'll have any answers. Does anyone else have this disc, and if so are you having the same very odd problem???

Thanks for any help in advance!

That DVD is exceptionally crummy. I couldn't even get it to play on any of my players so I had to rip the damn thing to my harddrive and open the VOB files manually. I watch all my DVDs on my PC so I obviously don't have the kind of high end technology at my disposal that I assume would be necessary to notice the weirdness you relate but yeah, it's a shitty disc and if not for the fact that it's the only way to see the film at the moment I'd suggest everyone stay far, far away from it.

Great film, though, another unique and incredibly original film from Vincenco Natali who continues to impress me like few others. First CUBE, then CYPHER and now NOTHING. Severed heards were never funnier! Too bad he'll direct NECROPOLIS next, based on a script by schlockmeister Paul W.S. Anderson. Somehow I doubt even he will be able to make a good film out of Anderson's usually generic characters and ripped off set pieces.

I read the script for it last summer and wasn't too impressed, but I guess I wasn't expecting a comedy. Or at least something with a comedy feel to it. I sure hope it gets some kinda release here so I can check it out...

It's a very funny film but it's always pitch black humor, which is the only kind of humor that has any right to exist. What's great about NOTHING is that it does so much with a very simple premise. Like CUBE and CYPER before it, NOTHING puts its mininmal sets and resources to great use with a lot of creativity both in terms of storytelling and in how it was visualized. The depiction of "nothingness" works surprisingly well. I wonder what Natali could do with a budget ...

natali was originally one of the guys that was supposed to direct the jim henson production of gaimans neverwhere but that went, well, no where.

There always has been.

Travis, I got my copy on ebay from a seller named gorbushka-canada. Gorbushka also has a website but it's completely in Russian so unless you speak that language you're better off getting the DVDs on ebay. From all I know these are not bootlegs but official Russian releases.

There's a bunch of cool stuff already available in Russia that cannot be found anywhere else. I recently bought the mindblowing IMMORTEL and am dead set on grabbing that PASSION OF DARKLY NOON disc.

Thanks for the responses. Yeah, pretty much a crap DVD for a great little movie. I've enjoyed everything Natali's done so far as well (especially CYPHER) - I can't understand why his last two films have gone unreleased here - you'd think even just direct-to-video releases with "FROM THE DIRECTOR OF CUBE" obnoxiously stamped on the cover somewhere would pique peoples' interest, but who knows?

It's too bad about him getting sucked in with PWS Anderson, but who knows - maybe Anderson's on to something (hooking himself up to produce the work of talented filmmakers, like Natali and John Fawcett) that'll result in better things.

I picked the disc up from www.alldvd.ca - I think they're either affiliated with Gorbushka or are a Gorbushka mutation of some sort. The site has an english-language option. Pretty cheap with quick shipping (though some disc ship from Russia and not the Great White North, resulting in a slightly longer wait). NIGHT WATCH and THE I INSIDE are on their way to me from www.alldvd.ca right now...

It says "Gorbuska.com" on your credit card report when you buy from them so it's most likely just their English language sister site or something.

Dunno about NOTHING but Dimension/Miramax has the North American rights to CYPHER so it really shouldn't come as a surprise that it hasn't been released in any form ...
