THESE ARE MY OWN OPINIONS - AND MIGHT BE DIFFERENT THAN YOURS

OK, I think that while some of the special features were good, most were a let down. Filled with horrible acting and they seemed very VERY amateurish:

Andy's Video Diary : A noble attempt to give him some back story, but it is really contrived and goofy. Like anyone would let the video camera go like he did. And to see him turn zombie takes away from the scene in the movie. Nice how they edited the sound bites from the cast on the radio, but it really didn't work for me.

The guy's a good actor, but the whole idea just fell flat a bit.

Special Report : I was hoping that this would be a compilation of the news footage either seen in the actual movie or stuff that was cut out.

Instead it was a mocj news cast with B rolls to on the scene reports.

The news caster was adequate, especially at the end when he got emotional, and I LOVED the "Infested" graphic over the map of the US.

What I didn't like was that the cut aways to the field reporters, especially the reporter in the hospital where they showed a zombie attacking was "move around your seat uncomfortable".

I expected more professionalism in the acting, but what I got was a Seduction Studios level of acting.

I'm a sucker for newsbroadcasts that show how the rest of the world is dealing with a diaster - but this was kinda bad.

The survival guy at the end, Tom Savini hamming it up (someone STOP letting him ad lib, PLEASE!), the kids in the basement....

I have such a hard time, after the actual movie showed how fast the zombie plague spread, that even in the span of a day that there would be interviews with authors at home, or reporters in areas that nothing happened at yet.

Good, but could have been a lot better if they just stayed away from "from the field" snippets.

Zombie make up : I can't remember the title, but it was a behind the scenes showing many zombie make ups featured in the movie.
The One armed Japanese Jogger was the fucking BEST!

A nice piece of filler. Fun.

Another Zombie makeup thing : Once again, I can't remember the actual title, but this showed the MANY extras being made up as zombies. Good stuff.

Anatomy of Exploding Heads : Head shots and bullet hits. A fun, informative piece.

Deleted scenes - with/without commentary : Some extra shots, alternate takes, extended scenes.
Some good stuff, and other things you see why they took it out.

I liked this, especially with the commentary with Zack Snyder and the guy who played Steve Markus (a REALLY funny guy).
Recommended, just to see the original "door" scene, and what really happened on the loading dock.

Director's Commentary: with Zack Snyder, the Steve Markus guy, and others...
DIDN'T GET A CHANCE TO LISTEN TO IT.

Shaun of the Dead trailer - awesome, as you know it would be!

I swear though, Shaun of the Dead is the NEWEST movie that internet fan boys are greasing their pants over...

It's nice to see the love this movie is getting, but there's so much jumping on the bandwagon concerning this movie that it's sickening!

...at least until Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy comes out...then there will be a whole NEW British loving frenzy out there.

I hate buzzwords!

SO... that's the deal, fuck ass.

ANDY'S LAST DAYS adds an interesting perspective but despite the actor's best efforts it gets a wee bit silly at times. There's some funny stuff with a goldfish called Ariel ...

SPECIAL REPORT: I thought the newscaster was terrible. Just embarassingly awful amateurish "acting". Other than the dude I thought Savini and the survivalist guy were the highlights of this feature.

Make up / Exploding heads featurettes: GOLD

Deleted scenes: some nice stuff but Polley's teeth freaked me out during the caffeteria scene.

I thought I was the only one who thought she had a really strange set of choppers on her - she's really all gums with baby teeth. Though she is pretty in a small town girl kind of way. The teeth are just too much. Love her acting, afraid of her teeth.

The bonus features on Andy and the newscasts were a bit over the top - like something a 19 year old would do for film class. Andy's set looked like someone's basement and was pretty much just laughable. Featurettes were good and so were the deleted scenes, but they could have deleted the Andy piece and the newscasts and it still would have been just fine.

Sarah Polley...cute, but scary milk teeth.

She looks like the Alien ready to shoot out it's second pair of choppers.

No commentary? That kinda sucks.

Whoops, sorry about that...

There IS a commentary.

It has Zack Snyder, the Steve Markus Guy, and others.

I didn't include it in my list/review because I didn't get a chance to listen to it.

I WILL put it in my original post...thanks for pointing that out.

Sorry I omitted it.

There's also a short video introduction by Synder that you can choose to watch before the unrated film. It's basically him explaining why some stuff was left out of the theatrical cut (MPAA, running time) and then stating that the unrated version is more personal to him, closer to his vision of the film. The guy comes across as really likeable.

Haven't listened to his feature commentary yet but it should be fun.

I agree, he does come across as a regular guy, who's passionate about his movie.
It was a nice touch, seeing a "personal" greeting to the viewers.

When I saw Snyder at Fango's WoH this past January, he was a nice guy, and he fielded some assinine questions from the audience - many, many just repeating the same question over and over again: Why remake Dawn of the Dead?

It was frustrating to hear, especially when people around me were voicing very valid & varied questions.

But he handled it well, and patiently responded to semi-belligerant people.

WooHoo...finally!.. i got mine in the mail today..got off work at 4:30 and watched all the extra features (save for the commentary)..

i really liked and enjoyed THE LAST DAYS OF ANDY and SPECIAL REPORT. I wasnt watching it thinking of it as an addition to the movie..meaning i wasnt dissapointed by bad acting and such. I thought it was very fun, campy, and just a really cool idea to add for the DVD... i mean at leaast its not just your generic DVD extras... they are special cool things made for the DVD and i wish a lot more filmmakers cared about giving us more.

The 3 featurettes were very cool, i especially liked Raising the Dead, talking about all the extras' work. Would have like to see a full length documentary type thing though.. its askin a bit but the full length doc on Hellboy, Blade 2, Willard, Texas Chainsaw 2003...and various others... are like a movie lover's (like me) wet dream. Oh well...cant wait for the original Dawn's 4 disc release.. with 2 full length docs.

The deleted scenes were interesting...actually all of them were. Which is rare. Usually alot of deleted scenes on DVD are all throwaway stuff that are hard to sit through.

Im gonna watch the actual Unrated movie now and will watch the commentary after that.

What a good day this has turned out to be. At noon i came home for lunch from work and got from UPS: Night of the Demons, Witchboard, and Shaolin Soccer. and THEN i get home and Dawn of the Dead is in the mail. Good times!

I heard a RUMOR that Play Asia broke street date - that the Region 3 disk was supposed to be released September 21 or so.

Whatever.

I got mine. And you got yours.

My disc arrives today! I already bought the Philips dvd player from Target and set it to region free (supposedly). I'll try it out tonight and post my results (fingers crossed!).

good luck!

Well, it worked! I now have a region-free dvd player and the DOTD 2004 disc! Bought a Philips DVP642 from Target last Friday (for $69) and reset it to region free using a hack sequence I found on a site dedicated to converting dvd players. The disc arrived earlier today, tried it when I got home from work and it works perfectly!

Damn you guys!! HOw the hell did you guys see this already, it's not even for sale yet.
I hate not knowing stuff

i listened to the commentary last night and its one of the best i've heard in a while... Zack Snyder and the producer seem like very down to earth and likeable guys..they dont take themselves seriously at all and dont come off as pretentions about their film...they even manage to crack a good amount of jokes concerning a lot of the scenes that seem silly or strange. They even give a response to the "running zombies" debate... which i still think Zombies WALK...not run. but it's worth a listen and they keep it fun.
