Cronenberg on THE FLY SE

I don't know if anything's happened between May and now, but if it is coming, it ain't gonna have a commentary...

'Rabid' Recollections
BY G. NOEL GROSS | May 10, 2004

You've had a pretty good run recently with DVDs. Especially, the Criterion release of Naked Lunch and now this appropriate ode to Rabid. Please, please, please tell me The Fly is next.

"Fox once phoned wanting me to do a commentary for The Fly. I said, "Sure, as long as I get to oversee the transfer." It's never looked right except in theaters. Once it hit TV and so on, it was always too bright. They said, "No, we won't do that." [Laughs.] And I said, "Then I'm not doing the commentary." There won't be a good DVD until Fox, or whoever they delegate it to, is willing to let me oversee that transfer, which as you might expect is an important thing for the fans and for me since, as I say, it's never been seen in homes the way it's supposed to look -- ever.

I've heard that there are rumors of a Halloween special edition or whatever. I don't know why Fox wouldn't do it. I mean the amount of money involved is very minimal these days. These transfers can be done in Toronto and they can be done in Los Angeles. Mark Irwin, who shot The Fly, lives in L.A., so I just can't understand their attitude. They just didn't want to bother. So, I would say, unless you see an edition of The Fly that has a commentary by me and says "Director Approved," or something like that, then it's just not going to be a good one."

Maybe you should read the Corner main page once in a while. We know this and have discussed it repeatedly.

Maybe you should stop being less of a dick? Look, I missed one article, and hadn't seen that before, and I hadn't read about it on here before. I've also seen the Corner miss stuff before. Since it's not even going at the moment, I didn't even think about it.

Maybe you could've said 'hey, that was posted before, but it's cool, yeah it sucks it ain't happening.' But whatever.

You really shouldn't call people names only because they point out that you missed something. But you're right that I did it in a less than friendly way and I apologize.

I like that Cronenberg is promoting this whole "driector's approval" thing. the accountability is refreshing. it kind of saves you from buying the versions in circulation, if the director is important enough that you are interested in a product he would endorse. I got Naked Lunch recently but mostly can't wait for Videodrome

i just saw the fly on HBO for the first time a couple nights ago. WOW.
Needless to say, I was fuckin' blown away. I'm a new jack when it comes to Cronenberg, I've seen eXistenZ and Spider besides the Fly. I'm so excited to see all his other work. Is his stuff consistently mindblowing? cuz what I've seen so far is really great stuff.

Sad to see as far as the contention between Charles and Wetbones. Can't we all just get along?

dude, you will become Cronenberg's bitch. And you'll love every minute of it.
make sure you leave Dead Ringers for the last.

Hm, too bad. This is the first Cronenberg film I ever saw when I was a kid and to this day I have a hard time watching it because it's so effective and touching... one of saddest and most frightening horror movies I've ever seen. Fox lets artists like Fincher supervise the transfers, why not Cronenberg? This is weird.

Because it's the atomic bomb cherry on a nuclear warhead cake, man.

After we ran that article about The Fly on the Corner we were contacted by Fox. Until I get the clearance to make an announcement, I'll just say there's good things that will make all parties involved very happy...including the fans.

Yes, yes! And then we can EAT the aforementioned sandwiches once the munchies have taken their hold upon us! Oh, ho ho! This is yet shaping into a plan!
