Top 5 films of the 2000s

Thread Starter
We've nearly reached the halfpoint of this decade, so why not indulge in the first half of the "top ten films of the 00s" list?

The films must have been released theatrically after january 1st, 2000 (so Fight Club doesn't count, for example), and be standalone films (so the LOTR trilogy counts as three different films, obviously).

What five films from the last five years do you think will be hailed as classics in the future?

1. Mulholland Drive
2. Adaptation
3. Hulk
4. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
5. The Man Who Wasn't There

runner ups: Old Boy, Ghost World, Time & Tide, Zoolander
post #2 of 102
1. THE RETURN OF THE KING
2. KILL BILL, VOL. 1
3. SPIDER-MAN 2
3. INFERNAL AFFAIRS
5. BATTLE ROYALE
1. Fellowship of the Ring (EE)
2.Kill Bill Vol.1
3.Alien (Scott's DC)
4.Exorcist
5.X2

Let's see, the top three are (not surprisingly) The LOTR trilogy.

Then it would be followed by-
Van Helsing
Moulin Rouge! (Why the hell didn't that win the Oscar?!)
Now >

1. Return of the King
2. Kill Bill
3. Gladiator
4. Passion of the Christ
5. Chronicles of Riddick

Outlook >

1. Spielbergs War of the Worlds (if executed the right way)
2. Star Wars Episode 3
3. Kill Bill
4. King Kong
5. Gladiator

As every Tarantino, the older, the better. Episode 3 has the balls to become a good counterpart to the original trilogy, as it´s concept is less childish than Episodes 1+2. Plus, it has Vader, which almost alone sets the classic status. With years to come, people will begin to acknowledge the potential of Riddick and yes, one day there´ll be another Riddick movie. I´m sure.
Spielbergs War of the Worlds sounds absolutely incredible. If he´s able to put much of his childish Jaws-Indy-Encounter influence in it, it could be the biggest movie ever made. Or the biggest letdown. We´ll see. A new Cameron could also blew him away..

Somehow I´m sure the hype of Passion of the Christ will be quite forgotten soon.

Other candidates for soon-to-be-entitled-classics :

Collateral
Road to Perdition
Band of Brothers
Gladiator
Gangs of New York
Last Samurai
Donnie Darko
8 Mile
Almost Famous
"Donnie Darko"...good call.

But "Band of Brothers" was a TV miniseries.
OK, let's see...Hedwig and the Angry Inch takes my top spot. I guess I have to put LotR and Kill Bill on there (which I'm counting as one movie each), so that leaves room for two more. Hmmm. Some possibilities: Shaun of the Dead, Lost in Translation, Capturing the Friedmans, Adaptation, Moulin Rouge, O Brother Where Art Thou, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Royal Tennenbaums...I feel like I'm forgetting some stuff. There's also the Spider-Man movies, both of which I liked a hell of a lot. I'll get back to you later.

EDIT: Charles reminds me Battle Royale. So, no order:

LotR
Kill Bill
Hedwig
Battle Royale
1 space left...I'll fill it by the end of the day.
In a few years, all will agree:

-Romero's Land of the Dead/ Cronenberg's A History of Violence (tie)
-Lord of the Rings Episode I: Damn right, Better Than Yours
-Equilibrium
-Solaris/A.I. (tie)
-The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions (tie)

Runners up: Bowling for Columbine, Ghost in the Shell 2, Shaun of the Dead, Battle Royal, Donnie Darko, Zatoichi, The Brothers Grimm, Steamboy, Kill Bill vol. 1 & vol.2, Glamorama, Alexander, Superman: Unfilmable, Ultimate Linsey Dawn McKenzie, Avary's Silent Hill, Star Wars Episode III: Last Chance Lucas.

Love it.
Seven:
Memento
Battle Royale
The Royal Tennenbaums
Sympathy for Mr. Vengence
The Pianist
Kill Bill
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Though the LOTR films are pretty much already enshrined as classics, they wouldn't make my cut.

4. Hero (Zhang Yimou, 2002)
5. Kill Bill, Vol. 1 (Quentin Tarantino, 2003) *placeholder for The Whole Bloody Affair*

Interesting stuff all around....
can't wait to see Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (its not coming out here until after the R1 DVD... bloody distributors)
Thought there'd be more love for Royal Tennenbaums, Amelie and the last Spielbergs... and it's interesting to see how many asian films there already are in these lists

Memento
The Two Towers
Jesus' Son
Kill Bill
Y Tu Mama Tambien
Hedwig
The Royal Tenenbaums

That'd probably be a top seven. What would be the genius films of the era.
1. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING
2. KILL BILL
3. O BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU?
4. THE ROYAL TENENBAUMS
5. ALMOST FAMOUS
Oh yeah--Y Tu Mama. That's a strong contender. I should probably just hold out until I see Eternal Sunshine before committing, though.
I need to see Sunshine again in order for it to move into this territory but it has all the markings.
I was watching Mulholland Dr. yesterday and I thought: "hmmm this is really great, maybe I should start a CHUD thread about the best films since 2000".
Great minds think alike.

Anyway:
1. Mulholland Dr.
2. A.I.
3. Hero
4. Road to Perdition
5. The Return of the King
Nothing terribly controversial there, I think.

Honorable mentions to:
Monsters, inc.
Devil's Backbone
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hulk
City of God
Black Hawk Down
I'm confused as to whether this is supposed to be our favorites, or the ones that we indeed think will be hailed as classics in the future. My 5 favorites so far are:

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind
In the Cut
Spring Forward
25th Hour
Way of the Gun

Dogville may possibly knock off Way of the Gun, but I'll want to see it again before I make that decision. I hold no illusions that these will all be hailed as classics, nor do I believe that classic status is always awarded to films because of their adherence to standards of goodness. I would also ask, hailed as classics by whom? Chewers? Critics? Or everyone?
The movies that will be most remembered are not always the ones that were most popular or controversial at the time. It is a difficult science to guess what movies will be future classics, and it requires cold calculation and separating yourself from your favorite films. Ok, here's my list:

1. The Fellowship Of The Ring
2. The Two Towers
3. The Return Of The King
4. Spider-Man (trust me)
5. Big Fish

Runner-ups

6. Anchorman: The Legend Of Ron Burgundy
7. Bloody Sunday
8. Almost Famous
9. City Of God
10. A Beautiful Mind
Gonna tow the party line and award the first three spots to the LOTR films.

Then
4) Memento
5) X2

Honorable mentions: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Minority Report, Kill Bill Vol 1

Potentials: Episode 3, Serenity, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Team America, The Life Aquatic

I think I meant it more in a "list your favourite movies since 2000" way. It's just that I am certain that overlooked films like Hulk, Man Who Wasn't There or Zoolander will become cult classics in the future.

Anyway, it's good to see so many different choices here.
Damn 'Dre beat me to the punch by listing SFMV. Here's my top 5 anyway:

1. Old Boy
2. Hero
3. In the mood for love
4. Friend
5. The Bourne Identity
1) Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2
2) In the Mood for Love
3) The Royal Tenenbaums
4) Donnie Darko
5) Mulholland Drive

I love it and everything Wong Kar Wai. But, I don't own In the Mood for Love on Criterion DVD.
Everytime I've seen it has been on the big screen. (All Six times)

I may take some money I made off of Labor Day and go buy it and THX1138 this weekend.
I made myself sick of the Lord Of The Rings films, so I can't list them. How I feel now:

1. Signs
2. A.I.
3. Chicago
4. Hulk
5. Matrix Revolutions

My Top 5 of the 2000's

My top 5:

Open Range: I thought this film was nearly damn perfect. I thought Robert Duvall should have been nominated for an oscar; nice bloody ending too.

Gladiator: Great film, love the sword fights and brutality of ancient roman arena fighting.

Road to Perdition: In my top 5 of gangster pics of all time.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow.....I know this movie isn't out yet, but i caught a sneak peek here in atlanta....Awesome movie, should really change the future of how movies are made.

Return of the King: This movie and the rest of the trilogy is what star wars was for my parents generation, this film(and the trilogy) will be cherished for all time, When people look back at this decade, Return of the King and it's companions will be what people remember.
I have to add SOLARIS somewhere, as I just saw it. Blew me away.
I think Solaris is just going to sit as an underrated, underseen gem. I haven't seen it since the theater, but it's just so fucking solid.

I can't even think of what my five favorites would be. I need to see In the Mood for Love and Man Who Wasn't There really soon though.
I could probably list a dozen or more that would be well worthy, many of them already mentioned, but there are only three that stand (at least ever so slightly) above all the other great films I've seen this decade. They are:

1) Memento
2) Spirited Away
3) Irreversible

I am glad I decided to participate in this thread, for in trying to refresh my memory I came across possibly the most spot on film synopsis ever written.

"Speed- A bomber on the loose because of greed and God sends a police officer as a deliverer."

Oh yeah, Spirited Away - strong contender for best animated film of the 2000s. Really puts Disney to shame.

Well, it's been almost 4 years. A lot of good movies have come out - so I get to pick 10. It's not my fault this decade's been so good.

Here's Andrew "Predictable Opinions" Eaton with some pretty safe choices:

1. Children of Men
2. No Country for Old Men
3. City of God
4. Zodiac
5. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
6. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
7. Brick
8. Hot Fuzz
9. The Departed
10. Oldboy

Da Honorables: The Lord of the Rings (they're all safe bets), I'm Not There, Shaun of the Dead, Pan's Labyrinth, 25th Hour, There Will Be Blood, Once, Sideways, The Fountain, The Squid & the Whale, Y Tu Mama Tambien, Almost Famous, Memento, Adaptation, The Proposition, Anchorman, Super Troopers, etc. etc. I could probably list any of those Apatow movies and I couldn't go wrong either.

I'd like to include Army of Shadows, Killer of Sheep, and Blade Runner: The Final Cut - but that'd be cheating wouldn't it?
Oldboy
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Shaun of the Dead
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
City of God
Hot Fuzz
Pan's Labyrinth
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Incredibles
