The most romantic thing I've heard all day.

Everybody's had some pretty good lists - I'm impressed folks.
Not much to add, but I would have to say The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford would make my top 10 list. No question it'll one day be viewed as a classic.
This could be interesting. Off the top of my head:

1. Children of Men
2. Into the Wild
3. Shaun of the Dead
4. Munich
5. The Lord of the Rings (I hate breaking them up and choosing which is best. They're a cohesive whole of greatness)
6. The Departed
7. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
8. The Royal Tenenbaums
9. There Will be Blood
10. The Incredibles

Also:
Gladiator, City of God, Talladega Nights, No Country For Old Men, Pan's Labyrinth, The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou

I could keep going on, so I'll cap it there.

Fuck...can't believe I forgot that one. It would be very high up on my honorable mentions list, nipping at the heels of the top 10.
My Top 8 for now are...
1) Lord Of The Rings: Return Of The King
2) Star Wars Episode III: Revenge Of The Sith
3) Kill Bill 1
4) Ryuhei Kitamra's Azumi (2003)
5) X-Men The Last Stand
6) Blade II
7) Batman Begins
8) Sin City

I do not know when the 2008 films will be elegible for this list but when they are either Indiana Jones and the Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull will be a likely addition and Iron Man will definitely be added to the list.

Was anyone else horrified at the numerous Hulk mentions? People really thought that?

I wasn't horrified, but I am always baffled by the amount of love that movie gets around these parts. I don't think I'll ever understand that.
More than one person picked Hero. That's weird to me. Hulk as well.

My personal favorite Top 5:

Return of the King: the most emotionally powerful filmgoing experience of my life. I'm not a huge crier at movies. I've been had a few times before, but when all of Minas Tirith bows in front of those little Hobbits...you can't see me, but I am legitimately tearing up just thinking about it. I sobbed like a newly orphaned child and didn't stop for a while after the film was over. Just a fantastic movie on every level possible. I went into the theater bathroom to try and collect myself afterwards, and an equally moved little girl and her mom walked in behind me wearing Elf ears and LOTR shirts. We all stood at the sink and had a good cry together.

Two Towers: badass. badass. badass. Helm's Deep, man. Helm's Deep! No matter how many times I watch it, I always forget that Gandalf is on his way to Helm's Deep, and get a nice rush when he appears on top of the ridge.

Fellowship of the Ring: I was so incredibly suprised by this movie. I've been living in a cave, since I'd never heard of The Lord of the Rings until that first teaser trailer appeared. I wasn't expecting to like this movie at all, and was dragged to see it by a friend. By the end, I was glued to my seat, hoping that if I sat through the credits, part two would magically start rolling.

Moulin fucking Rouge! : Yeah, I said it! I love this movie with everything in me. It's not for everyone. I'll be the first to admit that, but for me, it's just about perfect. Great music, great story, visually stunning. I love it.

Hot Fuzz: I became a fan of Pegg and co. after Shaun. This thing guaranteed them my first-born child. One of the rare comedies that gets better and more clever with repeat viewings. I can't even begin to list all of the things that I missed on my first viewing that I've caught on the DVD, but what sets this thing apart from other spoof/homage/satire films is A) a respect for their source material B) a good story of their own C) jokes that come at you a mile a minute and D) some great performances, especially from Pegg, Frost, and Dalton. I'm eagerly anticipating the next gem from these guys.
I'm guessing you're a fan of Lord of the Rings!
Nice list. Love McGregor in MR.

I'm usually not a big fantasy fan, but I fell head over heels for LOTR. I really did. Even if you don't like those films, you gotta at least respect them. The extras on the four disc DVDs still astound me. All of the attention to detail, all of the technical aspects that went into that movie, all the hype and press and $$$$ involved...it's a miracle PJ didn't fling himself off a cliff with all that shit swirling around him.
In no order:

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Munich
Letters from Iwo Jima
The Incredibles
Zodiac
O Brother Where Art Thou?
A.I.
The Departed
Untitled (Almost Famous)
Finding Nemo

Not arguing that there aren't films better than these, but these are the ones I find myself going back to over and over.
1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
2. There Will Be Blood (2007)
3. City of God (2002)
4. No Country for Old Men (2007)
5. Hotel Rwanda (2004)
6. Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
7. Oldboy (2003)
8. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
9. Mulholland Dr. (2001)
10. Tae Guk Gi: The Brotherhood of War (2004)

Honorable Mentions: Spirited Away, Children of Men, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Sin City. Those are the films I've given 10's to this decade.

A few nines for the hell of it: Downfall, Whale Rider, Once, Ghost World, Letters From Iwo Jima, Lost in Translation, United 93, Memento, The Departed, Million Dollar Baby, Finding Nemo, Spider-Man 2, Ratatouille, Casino Royale, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Talk to Her and Kill Bill, Vol. 2

Yes, I have a hard time not mentioning other movies that I like when it comes to lists like these.

I have a feeling that Wall-E has the potential to hit the top ten in a few months.
2000 (tie) - AMERICAN PSYCHO and THE WOMAN CHASER

2001 (tie) - SPIRITED AWAY and TAPE

2002 - probably PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE, though the film has not held up for me over the years

2003 - If I could have two Herzogs on this list, I would pick WHEEL OF TIME; if I couldn't, THE FIVE OBSTRUCTIONS

2004 - THE WHITE DIAMOND

2005 - THE NEW WORLD

2006 - BROKEN TRAIL, a television film shown in two parts and by far the best thing I saw that year

2007 - BUG, but I will probably never watch it again

Spike you have great taste in film, so it baffles me to see Welcome to Dongmakgol in your 'top 10 films of the 2000s'. Seriously? I mean it had a nice Seven Samurai vibe about it at times but Hye-jeong Kang suffers a wasted role, and although it tackles that lovingly compelling topic of the Korean war, the whole thing just felt very mainstream lowest common denominator entertainment to me. (and still remains the film with the Most Bizarre Boar Attack Ever) I think your list would look better by replacing it with Taegukgi, or even Silmido.
I always like making lists, but I've a feeling this will be my least original one.

In order of recolection:
1. Lord of the Rings
2. Oldboy
3. Requiem for a Dream
4. Spirited Away
5. X-Men 2
6. The Incredibles
7. No Country for Old Men
8. Children of Men
9. Kill Bill
10. American Psycho (I actually like this one more and more every time I watch it)

Creeping up the list: The Fountain, There Will Be Blood, Ratatouille, Casino Royale, Brick, Day Watch, Finding Nemo, The Host, Pan's Labyrinth, Munich and Zodiac

Fallen off the list, but still very fond: City of God, Battle Royale, Revenge of the Sith, Hulk, United 93, Lady Vengeance, Happiness of the Katakuris, Ichi The Killer, Royale Tennenbaums, Eternal Sunshine,

Obviously I need to watch more modern foreign films, the majority of my favourites in that area came out before 2000. Welcome to Dongmakgol has been on my 'need to see' list since one of the DVDActive writers reviewed it upon its initial Korean release.
1. REQUIEM FOR A DREAM
2. THERE WILL BE BLOOD
3. NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN
4. ALMOST FAMOUS (Director's Cut)
5. UNITED 93

Close (in no particular order): BRICK, KISS KISS BANG BANG, ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND, THE FOUNTAIN, CHILDREN OF MEN, THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE, KILL BILL Saga, TIGERLAND, 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN
post #77 of 102
Q: You prefer X-Men 2 to the other superhero flicks?
Yes. In fact, I prefer it to [b]every[b] other superhero flick.

Thank you! That's always been my stance.

Well, it and Batman Begins are close.
This is an impossible task.

I'll throw out a few films from different genre's that aren't very well represented on these lists.

The Incredibles
The Replacements
Wedding Crashers
The Man from Earth
The Pledge
The Man From Earth, yes! I'm not the only one here who has seen it. I posted a thread on it a while back, if it's of any interest to you, you should dig it up.
I actually have a review copy sitting here that I never got to. I'll move it up the list.
Here comes predictability yet again.

1. Memento
2. There Will Be Blood
3. The Fountain
4. Pan's Labyrinth
5. The Incredibles
6. Kill Bill (much like those of you with just "Lord of the Rings" I'm counting this as one cohesive filmgasm)
7. The Departed
8. No Country for Old Men
9. Into the Wild
10. A History of Violence

Close to the list: Finding Nemo, Mean Creek (no love?), The Aviator, Oldboy, Shaun of the Dead, Requiem for a Dream, United 93, King Kong, Munich, Brick, and the majority of 2007

And of course now I feel like I'm forgetting many things.
Drama: There Will Be Blood is the best film of the decade thus far.
Animation: The Incredibles and Spirited Away.
Fantasy(tie): Fellowship of the Ring and Pan's Labyrinth.
Foreign: Oldboy.
Sci-fi(tie): The Fountain(not really sci-fi I know, the Solaris remake would work just as well), Children of Men, and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.
Best superhero film: Spider-Man 2(runner-up, Iron Man), also, the Incredibles.
Pure geek awesomeness: Grindhouse(theatrical)
Guiltiest pleasure: Transformers.

I need to think of some more classifications. I've never been a big fan of comedies(although I dug Superbad). I'd probably have to go with Shaun. It's an unfinished decade, I'm missing a lot of earlier films I'm forgetting, and films I've yet to see. As for horror? Tough call.
Inland Empire
Mulholland Drive
Pan's Labyrinth
Spirited Away
No Country for Old Men
Tideland
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
United 93
I'm Not There
Away from Her

Bonus mentions: Children of Men, A Tale of Two Sisters, The Devil's Backbone, Kill Bill vol. 2, The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, A History of Violence, Happiness of the Katakuris, Shaun of the Dead, Mirrormask, The Call of Cthulhu, Infernal Affairs, Oldboy, Lost in Translation, Memento
post #86 of 102
None of them made my best of the decade lists, but far as superhero films go, Unbreakable and Spider-Man 2 are tops for me.
I'd like to play. Should preface this by saying that I haven't seen a whole lot of movies in the past couple years, so there are probably a couple dozen that would at least get consideration for my list.

As it stands, I've got:

No Country for Old Men
All the Real Girls
Kingdom of Heaven (DC)
Narc
Pan's Labyrinth
Spartan
About a Boy
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy

I haven't seen The Mist, There Will Be Blood and No Country for Old Men so that might change things a bit.[/QUOTE]

The number of people listing Untitled (the Almost Famous DC) warms my heart.

Get the fuck on that, Marty. Just have your prozac/whiskey/weed/self-medication of your choice on hand and your local suicide hotline on speed dial.

I recently became a daddy. So my movie going took a nose-dive. I saw In Bruges (which is also an honorable mention), Iron Man and before that, Transformers in theaters.

Other Master and Commander mentions cheer me considerably.

My faves too. Followed by "Hulk" & "XM2".
Ashamed to admit I forgot "Master & Commander". Have to bump the Royal Ten's and put it at #9.
Also as much as I love "Into the Wild", "There Will Be Blood", and "Jesse James", I feel I need to let my thoughts stew & see them again before ranking.
