CHUD.com Hitchcock Day Discussion

I'm hoping you dig this. Friday's normally a slow day for us. Not this time. 8 reviews, all for you...

(All times Eastern)
10:00am - Foreign Correspondent (Mickey Finn)
11:00am - The Wrong Man (Roy Russell)
12:00pm - Suspicion (Casey Robinson)
01:00pm - Stage Fright (Matt Hindmarch)
02:00pm - Dial M for Murder (Jeremy Slater)
03:00pm - I Confess (Micah Robinson)
04:00pm - Strangers on a Train (Nick Nunziata)
05:00pm - Mr. and Mrs. Smith (Tony Ryan)
Why must you keep me on the internet? I haven't seen the sun in days, man!
Stage Fright and Mr & Mrs Smith are the only two I haven't seen of that batch. Here's hoping Matt and Tony convince me to kick myself.

And I'm longing to see a Slater, Micah, Nunz triple whammy on three of my very favourite Hitch's.

Great spin on a "column" and one I hope (release schedules pending -- maybe there should have been one for the Film Noir set) sees the start of a semi-regular "Slow Friday" trend.

This will be a joyous day.

Starting these on the half hours as for once I actually.... SLEPT!

As for the NOIRS... I got them all and I sent them all to reviewers and they treated them like dick mcnuggets 'cause at most maybe one or two got reviewed.

Good start, Mickey.

And hey, to any other reviewers who got one of the Noir flicks and doesn't feel like reviewing it...I'll pay for the postage if you want to shoot it my way for a review. I love every one of those movies.
Dicks indeed.

Send thse things to Slater, immediately.

As for this: it's going to be an expensive month if all these discs are as palatable as the Universal one's from a few years back. Those docs are fried gold and these seem to be similar. Anyone know if Laurent Bouzedororororueaxx produced them ?

Foreign Correspondent -- that's with the windmills, right ?

The disc I got had a Laurent tagged documentary....don't know about the rest of the set.
Solid review- little bit short, but then I am routinely spoiled by Nick's long-ass treatises that he writes for reviews. Good to know that even CHUD's new guys are sharp contributors.

A damn shame. I would have treated them with respect and dignity.
Quality.

Can't get enough of those Box Set docs he did for Hitch.

He produced both of the Dial M documentaries, but they're...not so good. Kind of surprising.

Really? That's one of my favorite Hitchcock films. I was hoping for something special on them. Oh well.

"Blasted rings, god damned vultures …if only I could get back my entire fucking life." Heh. That's great.

I haven't seen Wrong Man in ages, but now I want to hunt it down again. Such a cool movie. Nice job, mongy.
Loving those covers. Almost as much as I love Lindsey Lohan's woollen breastical covers.
Nice job so far guys. Hopefully my review of Suspicion won't sour the milk. Really want to check out Foreign Correspondant now.

hope no offense was taken by that....now I see you're up to parting with muppets, damn that's gotta be a little bit (or a lot) painful.

Surprised to wake up this morning and the wife was re-watching the wrong man while doing the treadmill. We may, if the video stores are decent, try track down more of Fonda's work - such a great actor.
This is awesome. Seriously awesome. I'm kinda sad that I didn't participate. I just didn't have the time. This is a great idea Nick, I hope more opportunities to review sets of the greats come up. I think these do the movie community a great service.

Next in line... SUSPICION!
I have a sneaking... SUSPICION that this next review will be great too. Hee ho ho.
This is some good shit so far. I love it.
Love the artwork for The Wrong Man. Looking for a copy of the poster art on the net right this second. Then it's off to read the Suspicion review.

Damn... that's a fine looking poster, too. Might even be better than the artwork on the DVD.
Thanks guys. I know the first one was short...it looked right at the time. I'm suffering from size envy, now.

Really good stuff. And I love the way Nick packages them.

Question...were the screencaps in Foreign Correspondent too dark? They were crisp and clear (if a tad dark on the edges) on my home LCD, but dark as hell on my work monitor. (This will be irrelevent in future reviews, as I will be using a real program to grab shots, and not a digital camera, but I'm curious.)
""there wasn't one spot of intelligibility with the dialog"

Bloody hell. Oops.
Proof that spell checkers are no replacement for a live proofreader.

No. They were fine; especially for snapping them with your digi cam.

Running a good bit late. I drove to 5 stores to find a copy of Mr and Mrs Smith to get caps for Tony's review but to no avail. If anyone ahs the disc and do captures, lemme know. As a result, I'll get the next two up at 2:30 and mine up as soon as I finish it.

Thanks for the explaination.

Stage Fright happens
Stage Fright is one of my least favorite Hitchcocks, mainly because of the problem you mentioned in the inviso-text. Good review for a frustrating movie, though.
Nick, this was a great idea for the usually quiet Friday afternoons. These have all been fine reviews so far. Thanks for turning me on to some Hitchcock classics I might otherwise have missed.

Dial M for Murder happens.
Thank you, Slater. It would be interesting to have a spoilerific discussion regarding that issue. Given the current trend in thrillers to have the camera participate in the deception, I think this is far less offensive today than it may have been in 1950.

Awesome.

Great review.

And I agree regarding the artwork. Awesome. I have this poster (authentic) hanging up in my bedroom. You know... to keep the miss' in line.

Yeah, I don't think *that* twist is automatically a bad thing, because there are definitely films that have pulled it off. It's just a dangerous move, because if the audience figures out that the narrator is unreliable (like in this flick, or in something like Hero), then it suddenly becomes really difficult to care about what's happening onscreen.

Oh, and good review, Slater. You handsome devil.

I Confess is up.

The other two... EVENTUALLY.
I've never seen "I Confess", but as soon as I get the DVDs, it'll be the first one I watch.

Nice review.

Then, there's the Usual Suspects, but that only happens in the last 2 minutes of the film.

Great screen caps, Gentlemen.

Thanks. Hope the writing was up to snuff as well. Good work everybody.

What a fucking gyp.

Well, not really. Really great reviews so far, guys. I think the only film I've seen in the bunch is Dial M, I'm really interested in seeing the rest now.

Not as lengthy as I hoped or planned, but Strangers is up.

Link isn't working. Just in bold on the main page.

EDIT: Nevermind. Too quick on the draw, I guess.

Solid review, Nick. Looking forward to purchasing this one.
The only one in the batch I've neglected is Mr & Mrs. Smith. I'm constantly finding new stuff in Hitch's body of work that blows me away. Digging other folks' perspectives on film is why most of us are here, and its especially good to see you guys' take on the master.

Loving the reviews, kids. Keep'em coming.

Now, for anyone's continued Hitchcock education, let me recommend (apart from more films, natch):

Truffaut on Hitchcock

The Art of Alfred Hitchcock
The analysis of Vertigo in here is superb, and really went a ways in carving out Vertigo's place as one of the greatest films of my mind.

The Dark Side of Genius: The Life of Alfred Hitchcock
post #48 of 58
Truffaut on Hitchcock is a great read.
I could kiss you Slater for bringing up that the 3D version of M should have been included. I saw Dial M for the first time in 3D at the Film Forum in NYC. It was a blast. Great review.

Absolutely. These reviews are intelligent, funny, insightful, and fair. I'm sure Tony's will be as well.
