Time Magazine's very positive review.

I have it on DVD (R2-Universal's Asian Vision series, with DTS and very few extras), saw it a couple of weeks ago. I thought it was fantastic. If any of you haven't seen it I highly recommend that you do.
It has superb acting, a plot that moves briskly, a couple of really good twists. It feels pretty conventional (or American, if you will).

The only thing that should possibly keep people away is subtitles, and I've never been able to understand that.

The only thing that puzzles me is that Scorsese would want to remake it. It could be a "one for me, one for them" thing. But with source material this good he should be able to cook up something great.

I've been a fan since I saw Hard-boiled, I think he's a great actor. He seems to be in everything, though.

About the Time review: it might be something is lost in the translation, but I didn't think the little girl was his daughter. IMO, the ex-girlfriend/little girl scene is about his sacrifice: she has moved on with her life, he's stuck undercover. Either they have got it wrong or I have.
No. It's his daughter. He ask how old she is and the mother specifically lies about her age to make it appear he couldn't possibly have fathered her Then as he leaves the little girl pipes up that she's a year older than her mother said...making it pretty clear shejust didn't want him to know that he had a daughter (either because she's moved on or because she doesn't want a gangster for her child's father...)

Infernal Affairs II is even better, for me.
So it's me then. OK.
Fuck, I hate being wrong.
I have the Region 3 discs of the trilogy, but it could be that the R2 discs just have choppy subtitles. Does happen.
I didn't really think about it at the time (almost always a bad thing), but the scene seems to work my way too. Anyway: Dropping it.

II and III are not out here yet, and I didn't really know what I was missing until I got the first one. I'll be adding those to my DVD collection as soon as possible.

Personally I thought he stole Hero right out from under Jet Li so I'm really looking forward to this one.

In fact, HERO's cinematography, Christopher Doyle, is also INFERNAL AFFAIRS' visual consultant.

I want to get this so bad it's not funny. I just don't have a damn region free dvd player. I'm sure it will eventually get released over here though.
The disc I reviewed there is region zero, so you don't need a multi-region player. It's also available dirt cheap in some places. I think it cost me around eight squid.
Yeah, like a dumbass I posted before I read your review. I'm at the DDDHouse website but don't see what region they sell the DVD's at. Are they all Region 0?
They don't usually state region, but just find the one with that cover.

My hubby bought a cheap Daewoo a few months ago at some local store (Walmart, Costco, Best Buy...I can't remember.) Oddly enough it turned out to be region free without even mentioning it on the box or anything. I don't know if all Daewoo players work this way but it was a great purk for a near freebe.

Infernal Affairs is All Region.

No problem playing it on US Region 1 machines.

I love that it opens today and on the website under movie showtimes it says 'coming soon.'

God bless you, Miramax!
Yeah, well it looks like it's opening in five theaters today...in NEW YORK!! Between this & The Last Shot why do I get the feeling that I'm being railroaded into seeing The Forgotten or First Daughter. Is Disney behind either of those??

This movie BOMB in US..........

Only $4,780 average.............

I thought the cinematography was slick, the story engaging, and of course the actors were at the top of their game. What I hated, however, was all the flashbacks near the end that just drew the film out by reminding us of what had already happened. I don't know about you, but that's the type of thing I like to either recollect or discover on subsequent viewings. I also HATED the music they played during the death scene and the love scene. Way too over the top.

$5000 screen average is actually...dead average. It's not desirable by any means, but it's no bomb. General rule of thumb is that no matter how many screens you're on, over £3000/$5000 is what you're aiming for to make your P & A start working for you...

But it's a shame. After Hero too, you'd have thought a Tony Leung Hong Kong picture would have generated a little more interest. I suspect it'll get a fresh surge next year with The Departed...
Also: 5 screens. It's not like it's expected to do monster business is it?
But it surprises me that there isn't enough interest to fill those screenings. It's been getting great reviews, and I think it's a film that is very easy to like.

To a certain extent, I agree. I think melodrama has always a been a big part of Hong Kong movies, that and the fact HK movies will use any excuse to get some canto-pop in the movie.

Please tell me that is a joke. A ridiculous cover.
Primarily because (what appears to be) Maggie Q isn't anywhere to be seen in the film.

What's wrong with the rooftop shot used in every other territory the picture's been released in ?
That cover has to be wrong.

Maybe I was high, but I don't remember a chick with a gun.

They've done it before, they'll do it again.

Wait, is the Chicago Tribune describing Operation Condor, Jackie or dynamite ?

Well, to claim that Dynamite is "Great fun!" is a tad redundant, no? I mean, every jackass knows that.
So it's obviously Jackie.

According to Detroit Free Press, this movie will be released in Detroit next month.

I remeber describing Infernal Affairs to a friend who wasn't into Asian movies. When I fineshed, he nodded and said "Wow, that sounds like a good idea for a remake." At least he'll get his wish with 'The Departure'. I love the IA trillogy, largly thanks to Tony Leung Chi-Wai and the slick cinematography.

That cover looks like the photoshopped ones put on bootlegs and sold for 6 RMB in Shanghai.
