DOOM film discussion - Page 5

Not good, not bad, just ok. It's definitely one of the best videogame movies, but there isn't much competition. It's pretty repetitive for the most part (marines walk through dark hallways, run back to the lab, repeat). The Rock and Urban do a pretty good job.

"Quarantine time", aka the last 30(?) minutes is the best part of the movie. I actually liked the FPS sequence. Maybe it was because I was sick of the "marines walk/run down dark hallways" stuff. You could actually see the monsters, so that was good. The axe gag was good as well. I also liked the FINAL SUPER FIGHT, as ridiculous as it was.

Best Line: "I'm not supposed to die!"

Was I the only one who thought the FPS sequence looked like a ride at the carnival?

Not at all. It was a cross between your local haunted house and one of those awful Sega CD games like Nighttrap.

I was surprised by how dull much of this was. It took like an hour and some change for anything notable to happen. But once The Rock's character starts really settling in toward the end, the implausiable science goes off the charts, and the laughable FPS sequence happens - it's mildly entertaining.

Also, the fight scene between the monster and the bald black guy: Side-splittingly hilarious.

the funny thing about that scene was the crowd's reaction. After everything that happens, "DESTROYER" just FALLS OFF OF A CHAIN and dies.

Crowd: "awwww...."

I was going into this not expecting much. But I at least was expecting something entertaining. This movie blew. The video game has more atmosphere than this flick. And since when did Doom become about the battle between good and evil, with two marines duking it out in the end.

It's surprising that the creator's of Doom, who from what I remember were making a big deal about getting the right story, and doing justice to what essentially started the first person shooter game, let this thing pass. What could have been a great, sci-fi/horror film turned into a rehash of Aliens and Dawn of the Dead.

I only hope Halo is much, much better.

The fist -fight at the end was a probably a nod to deathmatch.

Anyways, I've railed enough on the film, let my say what I LIKED about it.

-Karl Urban. Stoic and above it all. After seeing him in the Riddick movie, I thought I'd never call him a good actor, but I really liked him in this.

-Rosamund Pike. Delivered her dialogue with the most conviction. Intelligent and a good screamer.

-The first-person. It actually worked, at least in comparison to the rest of the film.

-The Gore. It was gory.

-The Universal logo. Awesome.

-The BFG. Not the movie's lust for the weapon, but the actual effect of it being shot. That outta be in the newer Quake games. Didn't see it in Doom 3.

-The idea of inner good and evil, brought out by the 24th chromosome set. Needed more meat, but a nice idea

It sure did a good job of fucking up the movie.

So, everyone but Karl Urban is a closeted psycho.

Awful, awful film. It's greatest sin isn't the inept script or the somnabulistic direction or the soundtrack for an inbred crowd or the laughable fx. It's greatest sin is that it's terribly boring.

This is Albert Pyun territory. Just a little more expensive and with a tad better cast (with the exception of the Rock and Urban everyone else is a DTV actor).

Hell, nothing wrong with an Aliens rip-off, as long as its actually scary. Look, movies like Aliens and Jaws are always good to be ripped up, (hell I'm ripping off Jaws in a book right now) but the idea is that someone does it with authority and conviction.

Indeed.

I liked the stuff in the movie that was just like the game. Particularly the moments when the marines are going through eight hundred different hallways, and you're asking (as their characters probably are), "Haven't they been down this way already?" And then it appears that they just go into a circle to come back to the lab. And when they finally go down a mysterious looking hallway, they just end up back at the lab anyway, and it never mattered in the first place.

I laughed.

Same feeling here.

Doom was never about genetic fuckups slinking in the shadows with bullshit "oh it was just a monkey" false scares. Doom was about big fat ugly monsters from hell out in the open getting mowed down by ridiculously large weaponery. With a cast of one. This could have been an uber-Evil-Dead but instead its just cack. The only things I liked were the sound effects of the doors being the same as the game's, the "I'm not supposed to die!" yelp, and the oh-so-relevant debate about following horrible orders with the kid standing up to Sarge.

What I expected was a dumb movie about marines who shoot at monsters. What I got was a boring dumb movie about marines who mostly walk around and point their guns at the camera and only occasionally shoot at monsters. I didn't mind the fps sequence, it was ridiculous, but at least it was entertaining. I liked that in the end credits fps sequence the text "An Andrzej Bartkowiak film" shoots the viewer dead. A fitting end to the film.
