Badlands

I finally got to see this seminal film tonight and loved it. This movie is incredibly slow paced save for a car chase but the writing was superb and the film was superbly shot. I've always liked Martin Sheen as an actor and here he's riveting, it's mostly body language as he's not much of a talker, it's a shame he didn't become a much bigger name like Pacino or Deniro because here he really delivers an amazing performance, the fact that Kit has killed 4 people doesn't really matter because Sheen brings a certain likeability to the character he shouldn't really have, we know he's a killer but his non-chalant manner about it and his charming personality seem to erase any unease we have about him. Sissy Spacek is equally superb, Malick uses Spacek in such an innocent way, she seems attractive in a plain sort of way which is the point I suppose but her acceptance of Kit's actions seems slightly disturbing, like they're both kids who have no concept of the reality they're in or that their actions have dire consequences, as long as they have each other it doesn't matter.

Some amazing cinematography in this film, it's a shame the print was fairly old because it dulled some of the pictureesque shots in the movie. Is this available on DVD because I would love to see this movie with an upgraded transfer. The shot of them dancing in the headlights of the car was one of the most romantic things I've ever seen.

Another thing is the score, although it's just pieces of music that Malick uses than an actual score, it's really effective and lends a dreamlike quality to the whole film.

I can see where True Romance borrows alot from this movie, it copied the xylophone piece almost note for note but this film was inspired by Bonnie and Clyde so it makes no difference. I did like this film more though, it felt less hyper and more simplistic in it's execution. I'm starting even Radiohead were inspired by this movie when they wrote 'Exit Music (For a film)'

Such an amazing film.

I agree with this being better than BONNIE AND CLYDE, anyone else on the bandwagon for BADLANDS, the most romantic movie I've ever seen?

There's a moment just halfway through the film where Kit and Holly drive past an abandoned, possibly crashed car, and Kit snottily says

"Hey look, they'll probably blame that on me too...bastards!"

It's a perfect example of how great Martin Sheen is as Kit, because it's the perfect distillation of that teenage feeling of oppression. That the entire world is out to get him, he's still playing the victim despite the fact that he's shot and killed four people (at least) by this point. I think that is what is kind of fascinating, and horrifying, about the film. It's got this childlike feel that creates a really stilted and jarring atmosphere. Holly narrates like a child talking about an imaginary game she's playing whilst Kit is an angry adolescent finding his sense of self in the natural world and his role as an 'outlaw'. All the rules and caveats ("we started each day by making up a new password", "next time I ring that, it's time to clear out") feel like natural extensions of the games you used to play as kids.

It's an amazing looking film, even my DVD (which proudly advertises itself as WIDESCREEN) looks majestic. I'd love to see this in a cinema, or on Blu just because the look of the film is amazing. This is my second Malick film and the one thing I love about him, aside from his natural eye, is his use of classical music. His use of Orff in this is amazing and I now finally understand why Hans Zimmer choose to reference Orff in his True Romance score.

Sheen's beyond incredible in this. I don't have time to gush as much as I'd like, but this is definitely one of my favorite films of all time. The purple prose in Spacek's narration is perfect and her disconnect from everything that's happening creates this really hypnotic and dreamlike atmosphere of it all. You hit the nail on the head about the childish attitudes of both characters.
