Reccomendations for "Backwoods Horror"

I've been getting into Backwoods horror recently, stuff along the lines of Deliverance, Evil Dead, ect.

Any reccomendations for others?
the dukes of hazzard, george bush's acceptance speech and anything off of CMT
post #3 of 29
What was that recent one my memory is failing me right now. Wrong Turn or something the 30-somethings meet up with the inbreds.

Try Southern Comfort.

The Hills Have Eyes of course and Herschell Gordon Lewis' 2000 Maniacs is always a scream.

Not to slap down Trip's Wrong Turn suggestion, but the title of that film refers to anyone who found themselves in the theater watching it.
I'm still not sure if that's the right title. Are we talking about the one with the tree fighting sequence in it?
Yeah, that's the one. Wrong Turn sucks.
I'm not saying it was great but I wouldn't say it sucks either. It was entertaining.

You are correct sir.
Well it does have hot chicks in it.
Hot chicks does not a good movie make. Actual nudity would have made it more the exploitational flick it tried (and failed) to be, but alas the closest thing we got to naked was Desmond Harrington's empty, glazed over face.
Again, you are correct sir. Wrong Turn is a bland film w/ nothing to offer, nothing.
I certainly don't carry the same torch for the Dushku that many geeks seem to, but I adore, and obsess over Sisto, it's unhealthy really.
God, I need to find something I disagree with you on NOW. Jeremy Sisto is a fine actor, helped in no small part by May (though even by the time I saw that I rather liked the chap). He was one of the only things I liked about Wrong Turn, the other being the rake thin but deadly attractive Lindy Booth, who was merely fun to look at and died in the first ten minutes.

I don't care if the movie sucks I just want some reccomendations, anything will do.
Go ahead and check out Wrong Turn if you like it more mainstream with a backwoods edge. I personally found it trite and unlikable, but plenty of people whose opinions I respect (Floydian included) have really liked it. If you fancy it, good for you. If you don't, check out grimier, more independent films like Tobe Hooper's "Eaten Alive" (a movie which gets pretty shitty treatment but one I personally found gratifying in a cheap, Hooper-y way). I also really like Cabin Fever, but there are plenty who'd disagree with me on that one, too.

Try Mother's Day, a 1980 babes in the woods flick. The following review was found on IMDB. It made me want to run out and buy the DVD right away......

Date: 12 March 1999
Summary: Unpleasant and demented trash

I have to agree with another commenter. "Mother's Day" is nothing but garbage. It's neither scary nor funny. Three college friends thought their idea of a reunion was a camping trip in the woods. Their vacation is ruined by an old lady and her two perverted sons. They torture and rape the three women. One dies, but the other two seek revenge and strike back in disgusting detail. I'm glad that I used my Blockbuster coupon for this crap. My evaluation: (no stars).
Check for other user comments.

If you can track them down, check out THE BURNING and MADMAN, both of which are from the early 80s ... Neither are groundbreaking, but THE BURNING has one classic scene and MADMAN stars Gaylen Ross ( Dawn Of The Dead ) and has an odd/chessy/cool synth score ...

Mario Bava's TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE ( aka Bay Of Blood ) is very good, and the obvious inspiration for many 80's slashers ...

And if I may, I'd like to insert something regarding WRONG TURN ... I really don't understand the hate, except for the fact that the villians were kinda of the canvas bag Jason Vorhees ilk ... The scene inside the delapidated shack was very good, and while it was highly unoriginal, it was not like anything in the theaters in recent memory ... It's a better movie than given credit for, and it was at least made with some sincerity .....

As for the backwoods in the near future, here's hoping Dante Tomaselli's SATAN'S PLAYGROUND will be worthwhile ... It certainly sounds promising ....
... and just a suggestion: contrary to its title, DEEP IN THE WOODS isn't the type of film we are dicussing here ... I was going thru my backwoods phase not too long ago, and I made the mistake of renting it ...

my ass is still sore

Couldn't the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" qualify as backwoods horror?
I'm surprised anyone could recommend 2000 Maniacs while calling Wrong Turn a crappy movie, but to each his own, I guess.

Some of my favorites (I like crappy movies) include:
Just Before Dawn
American Gothic
Humongous
Zero Boys
Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Cabin Fever
Scarecrows
Tourist Trap is almost backwoods horror

These movies deal with your typical "hillbillies gone wild" and the like. Some pretty decent flicks deal with "backwoods" horror without the hillbillies, including:
Squirm
Evil Dead
Children of the Corn
Friday the 13th
Aswang
And so on.

Deliverance, Rituals, Southern Comfort and the like I don't really consider "horror," per se, but are still worth watching.

I never really cared for the Hills Have Eyes but it still gets a lot of love. Same for I Spit on Your Grave and crap like that.

I can't believe no one has mentioned...

FROGS

instant classic material.
Frogs is one of the worst movies ever made and yet I watch it every time it's on.

2000 Maniacs is one of the first films of it's kind, and it has it's own cartoonishly brutal charm. Wrong Turn has an 85min. running time.
I don't define Southern Comfort as horror either but it's every bit as good as Deliverance, imo.

Asia's still number 1. I think she'd be interested in a threesome.
