FLIGHT OF THE PHOENIX discussion

I heard about this film when it was first announced as being greenlit and have not really heard anything else until today, when I read that following WB's move of Alexander from November 5th to the 24th, that Fox decided to bump this back a few weeks closer to Christmas. Then, just a few minutes ago, I found a trailer for the film.

Quote:
When a C-119 cargo plane full of oil workers crashes in Mongolia's Gobi Desert during a sandstorm, the survivors attempt to build a new plane from the parts they find in the wreckage to escape. The plane was piloted by Captain Frank Towns, an employee of oil company Geodel, whose job it is to go to remote oil rigs and shut them down when their productivity has decreased. Having accomplished his job with one such rig, his plane crashes with all of the employees aboard on the way back to Beijing.

This movie's going to feature quite an ensemble cast, including Tony Curran, one of my favorite character actors around today. Definately looking forward to this.

The trailer on this one certainly has me interested. I'm more than pleased to see Quaid & Ribisi together. Time will tell though if the trailer justifies the film. I think I'll wait to check out the original Jimmy Steward version until after I catch this. Wouldn't want to spoil anything.

The Jimmy Stewert-starring original is one of my favorite, but this remake could be entertaining, at the least. Quaid looks solid, but whoever is playing the "smart plane guy" is no Attonborough.

I believe that's Mr. Ribisi.

I'm intrigued by the trailer. Might check this out in December.

From what my hubby tells me they might be toning down the Attonborough chatacter a bit in this one. Wasn't he a Nazi in the original??

Yeah, that's Giovanni Ribisi and he's a peroxide blonde. I found it interesting that he's playing a mechanical expert in this when he's also playing one in Sky Captain.

hated the trailer. Really silly & weak and gave way too much away.

No, but he did have a secret he didn't want anyone finding out about.

===========================Another Possible Spoiler======================

He uses his knowledge of planes to take charge and hoarde food and water to "make sure he stays alive" and basically treats everyone like dirt, but it turns out he's not really an airplane engineer--he's a toy airplane maker.

I loved the trailer.

Plus, it's got Mirando Otto (Eowyn) in it. I think she's pleasant to look at.

Richard Attenborough played Jimmy Stewart's right hand man in the original. The only secret he had was that he was a drunk. The character y'all are thinking of was played by Hardy Kruger.

The 1965 version is top notch entertainment. A great adventure film and character study made by the frequently underremembered Robert Aldrich. Gritty for its time with a cast to die for (like many Aldrich films. He knew how to assemble a cast!).

The only negative about the original was the accidental death of famous stunt pilot Paul Mantz during filming. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth seeing the Phoenix flying shots late in the film.

I see no reason to remake this movie. Especially with such wimpy actors like Dennis Quaid, Giovanni Ribisi and Tyrese. Tyrese? C'mon! Gimme Peter Finch, Ernest Borgnine and Dan frickin' Duryea, not Tyrese.

Dennis Quaid whimpy character? An underrated actor to say the least.

Ditto on Ribisi.
Quaid and Ribisi are excellent actors. They are also powerpuffs. They thrive as the nebbish or put upon drip or the "regular guy" but certainly aren't tough-guys, like the George Kennedys and Ernest Borgnines of the original.

I crack up in that moment in the trailer when Giovanni Ribisi says something like, "I'm the only indispensible person on this crew!" I keep expecting him to follow that up with, "Me. Giovanni Ribisi."

So do you guys see any reason to watch this? Isn't this a page for page remake of the original? And why even watch it if you have already seen the trailer?
It looked kinda cool until a saw that fucking pg-13 rating. pg-13? I'll pass, looks to be pretty violent and it has guns and lets face it those things don't really work in a pg-13 movie unless it's a western because for whatever reason westerns are given some kinda pass.
I keep watching the trailers and ads for this and wonder where the fuck all the guns from? Somehow I don't think this will be quite as good as the original. But, I am willing to give it a chance since I so badly want some good adventure films.

How can I not like the original when it features, albeit in a small role, one of my favourite screen and stage actors: the snarling, seething, charasmatic Ian Bannen.

As for Jimmy Stewart's face when the ice-cold Kruger drops his bombshell: priceless.

The new movie has a lot to live up to.

Another inferior remake of a Classic Motion Picture.
Sorry, but this film has not got Stewart, Attenborough, Borgnine, Kennedy and was not directed by Robert Aldrich, and I have no real interest in seeing this. Rent the original instead. Great freaking movie.

I'm not saying it's any better than the original (I don't know yet, I haven't seen it), but it's good to see that you haven't seen the remake before judging it.

Apparently this is coming out this week... I haven't heard a peep out of advertising.
They had an advertising tie-in last week with Lost. I couldn't help but think they were saying something like, "Watch, as another former cast member of LotR gets stranded after a plane crash!"
