Going region free

I hear there are codes which work on many existing DVD players. How do you find them? I want that Hellraiser cube.
You can type in your DVD player model number at this site and see if there is something for it.

I bought a Toshiba SD-4900 for $80 on E-Bay and I got it region free by downloading a file from this site. I burned the file onto a CD, put it in my player and a menu came up and I just changed the region code to zero by using the remote. I was also able to play region 2 PAL DVDs on this player before I did the hack by doing a few button presses on the remote and I found that out on the video help site. This Toshiba player has a built in PAL convertor and it's just disabled when it's sold in this country. I can't speak for any of the others players, but I've heard that some Cyberhome models are also very easy to hack and they are cheap.

Apparently there is no simple hack available. Are there any DVD players that are region free right out of the box?
I know they do exist. I would assume they are expensive though, I mean if you are willing to shell out the cash. I feel your pain though, these recent R2 releases are getting better then the american ones IE: Kill Bill, Hellraiser,Alien boxset in that alien head, Evil Dead Trillogy etc..

Floyd, I bought a Malata DVP-520 on eBay about a year ago, and it's great ... It's pretty basic, but it plays everything ( every region and PAL ), and it tracks flawlessly ( unlike my much more expensive Panasonic ) ...

I bought it from a Canadian seller on eBay, and it came in about a week ...

You will have to import. Those that are easily hackable and that are sold in American stores are cheap players. If you want quality import a nice region free player. Your eyes will love you.

Me, I use my computer to watch Region Free and I will eventually make my own TIVO/Region Free entertainment center.

I bought a Malata DVP-520 from HK Flix and I love it. Great store, great machine.

How about recommendations for sites to buy DVDs from? I've used HK Flix, Diabolik, Yes Asia, Poker Industries, and various Amazon.com sites. Any others?

I've had good service from www.xploitedcinema.com

and I use www.dddhouse.com for a lot of my Asian imports. They're usually really cheap.

I have to disagree. I too have the Toshiba, a large Sony HDTV, and professional cables. The region free hack is easy, and the picture and sound (in 5.1) is as good as I have seen anywhere. I frankly dont see how it could be better (unless it was hd-dvd).

I don't know anything about region free DVD players however I was looking for one on ebay and I came up with this one.

Is it any good? Helpful?

Sweet! That hack site is great. I can finally watch a DVD I bought from London that previously didn't work on my player.

I bought a Philips DVP-642 from Target for about $70 and entered a four digit code through my remote, and then had a region free player. I only have a flat screen TV, not HD or anything like that, but I think the quality of this dvd player is excellent.

From what I have read, these players (and many other dvd players) are all manufactured to be capable of use in any region, but are then set to a specific region prior to export. Therefore, I don't think there should be any issue with picture quality. However, the Philips players do not have many of the additional features found in higher end dvd systems.

Proper PAL conversion (or any) is the only real issue some people may run into.

My APEX 1100W died over the weekend. The power supply popped. It lasted about three years. Only cost me $70 bucks and I downloaded a free hack. I'll probably replace it with the newest version from APEX due to the price. It was a nice little machine.

Be careful. I think the newer versions are less hackable.

Load up a PAL disk and then reply. To get a great quality conversion you need to spend a little more money and get a region free player with a built in PAL/NTSC converter.

The Toshiba SD-4900 player I bought has a built in PAL converter. They are just disabled when they are sold in the US and it's an easy hack. It's also progressive scan and it plays DVD-audio discs. It's just less expensive now because it is last years model. I've had a $500 Samsung and a $300 Sony and this Toshiba is better than both of them. The picture is great with any disc I put in it and it is now my main player.

That's good David. I'm not so lucky. My Sony and my Panasonic are non-hackable. So I either have to shell out more money for another DVD player that I can hack or what I'm doing now is making a TIVO with a region free player.

I think I have the SD-4900. I have to go look in storage now.

EDIT

Thanks to all for the great information here. This should be a sticky thread. At least until I finally go region free one way or another.

I gotta get that Hellraiser box!

Yeah I dug up the old site I used to go for for all things APEX to start doing some reading. I'm probably not going to luck out like I did with the 1100W. But, we'll see.

I have the SD-4700.

After checking that website again I am screwed and there are no hacks listed. I wonder if the hacks for the 4900 would work for the 4700. Murphy's Law I guess.

I used to have that problem in reverse convertting NTSC to PAL until i found out my DVD player could automatically do it for me ,all i had to do was push one button on my remote dohh!!!

Ive seen a few of you guys struggling with your DVD players and it always stuck me as plain stupid that the players are cheaper in the UK but the discs are more expensive

another site that will give multiregion codes is http://www.dvd365.net/
just go to hacks and seach for your make of player

That player actually HAS a PAL/NTSC converter built in. I tried Shaun of the Dead, and AGAIN, it looked great.
Many of the "off" brands do have PAL/NTSC convertors in them. My APEX did as well.

This one is listed as "region free". Any idea if this is a good value? http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?dpno=466570
